Gonna try though! Would save me a ton of $ and I won't get black lung I guess. What do you guys/gals think?

Dark and Ambient

So you like jams like the Drum Logos Post-Twist Jam and the Waves from IT?

Anyone ever heard of "Godspeed You! Black Emperor"? They are an instrumental band consisting usually of 3 guitarists, 2 bassists, a violin player, a cello player, and 2 members that switch off on drums and percussion. While they don't use synthesizers or anything like that to create noise, they carry the same dark energy that 1999-2004 experimented with.

For me it just makes sense that Phish fans could open their minds to music like this, especially considering how much you guys love it when the boys get really spacey and ambient. Their songs work in movements and most of the time, they're just building up to a beautiful, yet haunting climax.

I apologize if the title is deceiving but I really think you all should give this band a listen. Here's a good song to start with (one of their shorter songs):

Concerts at Fenway.

I've had the pleasure of seeing hundreds of Sox games over the course of time (Game 5 against the Yanks in 04' was probably the most memorable) but only 1 concert. Of course that was Phish.

It was a very fun day and I thought I had pretty good seats going in, I was 2nd row behind the right end of the Sox dugout. Turns out the sound was horrific there. Really, really bad. A few other people I talked to on the first base side, up a little higher, also said the sound was a problem that day. My buddy who was about 20 rows from the rail on the field said the sound was great.

I'm thinking of going to the McCartney show next month. That is, if I can wait out the scalpers and catch them with a handful day of the show for face or maybe even below (here's hoping). I don't want a sound repeat of the Phish show however.

My wife and I are old school, she's a little older than me and actually remembers in the invasion, yet neither of us have ever seen a Beatle play live so this would be special for us. Paul's really one of the last on my bucket list.

Who have you seen at Fenway? Where did you sit and was the sound any good? Chances are the only tickets I'll be able to afford or get at face will be back pretty far so what I'm really looking for here is a magic section, away from the stage, that gets pretty good sound at Fenway. It may not exist but seems worth asking.

On tour as it is in Gamehendge.
Give us this day our daily toke
And forgive us our WSP stats
As we forgive spreadheads that come to our Phish shows.
Lead us not into the Biscuits

The greatest generation

The "bands you can't get into despite making sense" thread spurred this rant

I turned 36 in January. By 1981 (I was 4) we had Michael Jackson on his own, on his way to taking over the music universe (absolutely destroying anything Berry Gordy put together beforehand, arguably the greatest music "engineer" to ever live). IMO, MJ is one of, if not THE greatest solo artist to ever live. Think about that for a minute. By '82 we all had Thriller. And we know how that went. I try and tell kids this to this day, you have NO idea what a superstar is if you weren't around when MJ was peaking. Long before the days of mass media, this guy was EVERYWHERE. He was the first artist to embrace (or be embraced by the "new" marking media) that wanted to latch onto music and the power that feeling produced. Listen, Michael, on stage, hair burning, sold so much soda pop, he single handley made mass maketing what it is today (for better or worse). Talk about affecting the world. He's almost like Eli Whitney for f***s sake!

I can't even count the number of incredible musical artists to peak during my lifetime. Can you?

Then the '80s really broke through. The evolution of modern American music really become apparent. Shit, Devo is a thing. What does (did) that say about how far music would come?

There is so much to say about how far music has come in my lifetime it's not even funny. Hip-hop was born and raised throughout the '80s and on. The early '90s produced what can be singled down to the most significant musical burst within a genre. The meteoric rise of rap, and how sub genre'd hip-hop would become (again, for better or worse) can be, IMO, narrowed down to Gangsta rap. The Hip-hop that existed beforehand, and how Rap evolved in the last 30 years has come to define not only a generation, but generations. And many more to come.

So, the late '70s/early '80s produced this new kind of music that has not only lasted for 30 to 40 years, but is affecting how music is digested, learned and interpreted for the future.

I could go on and on here, and not even mention the affect Metal and EDM has had on us. I mentioned a thread got these thoughts flowing (disclaimer: these ramblings are in no way conclusive. But rather a jumping off point for discussion). What really got this thread started is the thought I had, that at one time in my life, I had Tool, Rage, Phish, Radiohead and an aging Michael, not only producing cutting edge music. But music that has no doubt, and in no doubt, will last throughout the rest of time. Look at the '90s for a second, with no prejudice, no preconceived notions of what you thought that era was about, and see the big picture of what kind of world we live in because of that music. The '70s-'00, those 30 years is the biggest growth America has experienced. Music was, is, and will be, and huge catalyst for all of that. Music and the arts will always be a mirror of what humans think, feel and believe. Music is a reflection, a true reflection, of how we choose to want to live.

I expect to see a lot of comments here regarding, going as far back as the late '40s, to most likely the '60s. I will never disregard what kind of affect that era has had on music history. But, as our boy once said, "the times, they are a-changin". Yes, indeed, they sure have.

Thriller>Sgt. Peppers (speaks volumes)
