The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
My thought: what if I listened to the lowest rated show from each year? What would I learn about the band, about their evolution about RATINGS about hidden gems?
How many of the low ratings are fair? Accurate? Completely unfair? Let’s find out!
Because there’s only one show in 1983, I’m skipping that year and heading straight into 1984.
This show holds an astronomical 3.082, which really isn’t that bad all things considered.
I don’t think this IS a bad show, per se, but I do think it’s a primal show. They aren’t there yet as a band, and just as often as there are glimpses of greatness, there are glimpses of an above average Dead cover band. So what’s good? Can’t you hear me knocking is probably worth a listen, but the hands down highlight that really made me go, wait, there they are, is the Whipping Post > Drums. THIS is phish and where they’re going. The Whipping Post even features a little riff from Trey at one point that sounds almost like it could be Mound, way ahead of schedule.
Is 3.082 accurate? Probably not. Probably too high. It does seem fair though considering where they were as a band at this point. Are there 2.65 rated shows in 3.0+ that blow this show out of the water? I think it’s safe to say yes.
Notable jams: whipping post > drums
