johnnyd This would be pages long for me. I'd have to brainstorm in excel or word or something. Its been around 22 years since my first concert, and I'd say I've averaged seeing an absolute minimum of 20 shows a year over that time. More recently its been more like 50/yr if you include club shows and multi act festivals. But to simplify:

Started with hard rock, classic rock, and old school hip hop. Always loved the oldies b/c thats what my dad listened to. Saw Van Halen, Guns and Roses, ACDC, Metallica, Pink Floyd, with supporting acts that included Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Faith no More all by the time I was 20. Van Halen was an early favorite, Appetite, Ten, and Paul's Boutique were three albums that blew my mind back in them days. Then, simultaneously, grunge happened and I started getting into Phish. "Alternative" quickly turned to shiate, so it was mainly phish and early/mid-90s hip-hop for a while. Caught the Grateful Dead a couple times. Then the rest of the jamband scene really came along, which i went to tons of shows, but didnt really get into the music that much. All along I had close friends and relatives in bands and would go see them. Rock, blues, reggae, jam, fusion. Then phish 2.0 ended I turned heavily toward electronic music and have since seen tons of djs do their thing. Suprisingly, Burlington has a pretty amazing EDM scene going on now. So thats where I'm at - 3.0 and EDM. 2010 has and will include Igloo fest in Montreal, Winter Music Conference in Miami, Starscape, Camp Bisco, at least 3 Phish shows, and something local practically every weekend.

Or should I have gone with: First the earth cooled. Then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat and died out and turned to oil. Then came the arabs, they bought mercedes benzes...

Probably the show I'm most embarrassed for having gone to (at least that immediately comes to mind) was Paula Abdul at the Brendan Byrne arena, maybe 1991 or so. One of my best friends in h.s. was completely enfatuated with her so a bunch of us bought him a ticket for his birthday and we all went. The music was what it was, but it was a decent stage show and choreography. Not really my bag, even back then.

Joe Cocker at the Orpheum Theater back in 94. The person that I went with wouldn't take my money for the ticket after the show.

Black Crowes, PPAC, 93. It was so loud that my ears bled and the band was soooooo messed up on drugs. Very unprofessional. I went with three other people to the show and my buddy and I left early only to find my two other friends waiting for us in the car.

MJZ1974 Permalink
MJZ1974 Wow...lets see.

My mom worked for Olympia Entertainment for a while when I was a kid (Detroit Red Wings, Joe Louis Arena). This was in the '80s before we built The Palace (Auburn Hills). JLA and Cobo (to a lesser extent) were the 2 places.

I'm not going to even list...but it's in the 200-300 range. And that's non Dead / Phish. I had free tix to EVERYTHING! We went and saw it all...from Huey Lewis & The News to Luther Vandross to Slayer.

All the metal gods at the time : AC/DC, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Alice Cooper, Scorpions, Def Leppard etc...fuck I wouldn't even know where to begin.

But my first was Ozzy Osbourne in 1984 (yes I was only 10!)

Memorable standouts include:

1986- Ozzy wsg Metallica. Metallica was still a small theater act at the time...and I saw Cliff Burton a few months before he died.

1988- Bruce Springsteen

1985- Michael Jackson at the Pontiac Silverdome (not my music but it was a cool show).

1991- Nirvana with The Beastie Boys (Michigan State Fairgrounds) once again not my music but a high energy show.

1989 Madonna (yeah I said it...and it was a good show)

1987- Megadeth at the Royal Oak Music Theater. Caught a guitar pick and Dave Mustaine's T-shirt. Maybe 300 people there.

2001- Billy Kreutzmann. Sharkey's bar in Kailua-Kona Hawai'i. Tribute to Garcia (it was early August). I met him and he gave me a drum. MAYBE 100 people there? I told him we (my brother and I) were from Detroit and he told me when Donna destroyed her hotel room at the Ponchatrain in 1979...that was the last straw! For the record Deadbase lists the Detroit 1979 show with "Donna Absent" ;-)

1989- "The Monsters Of Rock" festival at The Pontiac Silverdome. Loud Loud Loud (Metallica, Van Halen etc...)

1994 - Pink Floyd (Silverdome)

1995 - The Who performing Quadrophenia (The Palace)

And a million others...my brain is going to explode!

Not counting 70+ Dead...30+ phish...25+ Ratdog...

Oh...I was a roadie for The Lillith Fair in 1998...went to 18 states in 29 days.

1999 I was a roadie for Tori Amos (never saw a show...I was on the "go ahead" crew to prep the next venue. I almost went to jail for taking the doors off the hinges at Radio City Music Hall...but that's a different story for another day).

Score: 0

MJZ1974 Permalink
MJZ1974 ...I forgot Bob Dylan at St. Andrew's Hall in 1999 (where I saw my 1st Phish show).

Announced at the last minute (400 tix sold)...slept in the alley for 2 days...what a party in that alley. Played the next night with Paul Simon at Pine Knob...paled in comparison.

Alpine Valley Furthur (1996) was my first "Post Jerry" show. The Bruce/Bobby Jack Straw was a highlight for sure. (Los Lobos was great all around).

Black Crowes (front row orchestra pit, row AAA) at The Fox Theater (1997?) with my then girlfriend. I was sober...she was dosed. Wow...never again bro. I was a defacto babysitter. Weird.

And at least 100 more...I had more ticket stubs than people had baseball cards! (God bless my parents...strict as hell, but in the right way).

When I was in High School Kid Rock played gymnasiums, pool halls, parks, VFW halls, everything around here. We laughed our asses off when he got famous.

that's all i've got for now. living close to the creek and having some hook ups around indy, i got into a good chunk of those "more random shows" free. an up in smoke, a smoking grooves, horde in '95 and '96, volunteer jam (charlie daniels, hank jr, and another act or 2). plus, there's 2 bonnaroos. i'm not even going to try to delve too deep into those, but for the most part, the bands that i really watched their whole sets at the 'roo, i have seen at other times and they are listed. i am definitely missing some opening acts, fest acts, and random'ness. I can say definitively, phish is my favorite band i've seen. Soul Asylum is my least favorite.
