favorites for long drives

benevolution Permalink
benevolution What are some of your favorite sets for those long-ass road trips? (Do phish heads ever make road trips...?) I got a pretty lengthy drive coming up next weekend and I'm looking for some sets with really long jams. Last time I made this trip I listened to the entire Big Cypress midnight-dawn set, and I've done it before with most of the other Phests too, so I'm looking for some of those lesser-known second sets that just make you lose track of time. What are some of your favorites?

palmeresquandolas I like the 2nd sets from the last three nights of Island Tour '98. Particularly the 4/3 four song set.

palmeresquandolas Also 12/11/97: Drowned -> Roses Are Free[1] -> Big Black Furry Creature from Mars[2] > Ghost -> Down with Disease -> Johnny B. Goode

Debut of Roses and a spacey Ghost> DWD Reprise that'll surely make you lose track of time.

turquOiseMountain definitely agree with the island tour for long drives!......7.12.91 from the livephish series sounds pretty fresh......not as long I guess, but it got me back from Upper Michigan on the Fourth of July this summer......whoa!!!

I don't know the festivals very well, but SBD's from Alpine this summerr (8.14 and 8.15) are tight, juicy, and equally laced with bustouts and big jam fav's......

The Live at the Roxy boxed set, if you don't already have it, is always good to have: three shows - my favorite sets are the Friday and Saturday Night openers

As for the fests, I'm starting with the Cliffford Ball

MiguelSanchez here's a couple of my favorite long drive winners...

1) 8/9/97 alpine- both sets are good, but the second is great. check out the scent> slave> weekapaugh closer

2) 12/29/98 msg- once again, both sets are geat, but this second is mind blowing....don't go spacing out in the scurvy depths of this 2001. the yem is one of the best ever

3) 8/2-3/98 deer creek- this is a nice up beat run. this is a good mix of funk, rock, and tasty rare gems. check out the gumbo with manteca teases all over it. the tube is no joke either.

4) 9/29/99 memphis- overall, the first set doesn't really do it for me. the second set, on the other hand, is just massive. you get another great 2001, and in the mike's groove, they just throw the tension/release right in your face... mike's> catapult> mike's> kung> mike's> i didn't know> weekapaugh!!

5) 6/18/94 uic pavillion- this second set is a straight up rocker. the peaches> mind left body jam> bowie is perfection. tack on a mcgrupp, a fine tweezer, and a tease laced yem, and you have what i call a "keeper set." muy bueno!

drive safe...

dbar218 Ever listen to the headphones jam?

I like that sometimes

There is a "columbia jam" from Dallas in '95 that is 30 minutes long. It's dope too

It's actually 11-22-1994 from Columbia MO but it was released on Live Phish vol. 18. 23 minutes of space-funk

6/14/2000 ... Fukuoka ... maybe it doesn't fit the 'lesser known' criteria, but it sure does fit the 'lose track of time' thing. Twist goes so far out that when they come back to it, it's surprising, like 'i forgot they were playing this tune'. Then the Jam> Walk Away> Jam...wow. It's great "long drive" music.

One thing I like to do on a long drive is to listen to runs of shows, like recently I listened to both SPAC 04 shows on a trip, and that was interesting....in fact those would be another recommendation, lots of long jams there. I do the same thing with the Dead, spinning my way through whole tours during a week with a lot of driving. I'm in the car a lot and it's where most of my listening happens.

parrott56 Second the Fukuoka nomination. A lot of late 1999 through early 2000 is great for helping to shift HUGE blocks of time (i.e., with huge jams).

I couldn't count the number of times Possum or Antelope has thrown me WAY above the speed limit without knowing it.
