Need Help for NYE

Alaskanmoma Permalink
Alaskanmoma Lets say i hit 12/30/10-1/1/11, are hotels and travel wicked expensive? I like all of you want to be at these shows but i don't know if i can swing it. Should I drive or fly? get a hotel or sleep in a homeless shelter? I go to shows alone because sadly college kids don't jam like they used to. Advice would be awesome so i can try and get these tickets and not spend a fudge ton of money.

CanYouStillHaveFun couchsurfing.org might be a better option than a homeless shelter, I'm probably driving out there by myself from Chicago if I end up getting anything in the lottery.

jackl Check out NJ suburbs for cheap hotels (Paramus, or Secaucus NJ for instance, across the GW bridge or Lincoln Tunnel or some hotel nearby on I-80. Not only are most NYC hotels notoriously expensive, but the nicer ones require you to do a three or four day minimum stay during NYE weekend. Nonetheless, there are some cheap hotels in odd places in NYC, but they are still relatively expensive and not all that special.

MSG isn't a bad venue, but NYC isn't a good "tour city" IMO. It's no Hampton or Charleston happy to welcome lots of Phish fans to town with lots of empty motel rooms. A Phish show is no big deal as far as New York City is concerned.

Unless of course you have the bankroll to be in the city. But rates on NYE in NYC with or without Phish are insane. So if your looking to save money take the train from the above locations. It takes like 40 mins. I will say one thing though I am not sure the cost of the train so you may want to look that up.

But if you do that train in early so you can be around the best city IMO in the country

princerox Umm you can't just drop in at a homeless shelter. In my experience (and I have some) there's a waiting list in Seattle, DC, and ATL. And you have to really need it. 9 months clean and never going back :-)

MrJones I didn't grow up in New York City but I grew up in NY state so I have been down that way a time or two. You will be in for quite the experience if you stay in a homeless shelter and good luck convincing them that you are in need of the space. Intentionally transient and homeless are two totally different things.

Book a room. This is Manhattan we are talking about, they will not run out of hotel rooms, but cheap rooms in the immediate vicinity will book soon if not already. You can always get a cab back to your hotel if you have to stay a a number of blocks away from MSG which you inevitably will. You might have to drop a couple bucks to stay close, well worth it I'd say. For cheap lodging look to the boroughs and hostels.

If you live close (in the northeast) then drive. If you don't you are entirely dependent on the public transit system which if you are unfamiliar with can be daunting at first. Although parking can be a pain in the ass and expensive. If your savvy with cities and traveling it will be easy to just take subways and trains if you have to. Avoid subways in the wee hours of their operation. Subway lines are limited that time of day and some can be sketch if you don't have it figured out.

If you really are trying to not drop money on lodging then be safe. Stay in well lite areas. Two blocks can make all the difference if you get to wandering and trying to find a place to crash. Seriously don't try to find a homeless shelter, that will be one hell of a story. If your looking for that then hit it up of course, but take this advice get a hotel room, you'll be glad you did.

Or eat a bunch of acid and stay up all night wandering in well lit areas and find a place to freak out and drink coffee till dawn but leave the homeless shelter for the homeless.

bostonron Check out the White House. It's a hostel on Bowery between 4th and 3rd. A single room runs 35.00 and a double is 75.00. Very clean (for a hostel) and check out is 11am the next morning. Make a reservation sooner rather then later because it will get booked for NYE. I've stayed there many times, the staff is pretty laid back and there are lots of international students there.

castinajig yeah you can drop 350.00 easy a night Mid town but if you start looking now a little futher uptown you MAYBE able to swing a room for 150.00-200.00...but NYE maybe so maybe not....
also what Mr.Jones said the place never shuts down at 430 am there will be mad people out and about pretty amazing....
the train in is also a good idea go on Njtransit.com find surronding towns close by the station stay in Jersey a bit cheaper and Glide the train!it stops right under MSG! get off the train boom Penn station your there.... same building.
@Jackl..true dat!

MSG is right on top of Penn Station (where most trains come into). So you can definitely get a train into Manhattan that day from somewhere further out on Long Island or in New Jersey. You can check out http://www.mta.info/lirr/ for info on the Long Island Railroad and www.njtransit.com for info on New Jersey Transit trains. Not sure if they will be running different schedules for NYE or not since there are so many people, but I'd definitely recommend getting into the city early in the day.

YorkvilleBeerLover I live on the UES. Plenty of safe places to park a car and crash for ther weekend. Rent a small van, sleep in it. Jersey is a great bet too. You could seriously camp somemean near a train line in a field every night. Or, travel light, stay up all night, sleep in the park during the day, rage!
