Last night I saw Jackson Browne and David Lindley as the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee. I hadn't seen the two of them since 1976 when I ran into them at an IHOP the morning after a gig at UC-Davis. The music was great. Jackson is the perfect singer/songwriter, with a great voice and songs that will both break your heart and fill your head. Lindley played all things string, from an old, fretless Middle Eastern instrument called an oud, through fiddle and all sorts of lap steels, and sang more than I'd heard before. Jackson's full band was also there, although my favorite moment was a David Lindley solo performance, his destroying Steve Earle's Copperhead Road.
Just so you know, Jackson is still a walking, talking, singing male model. I can understand why he forever gets the women I'd love to sleep with. In the past skinny, he must be running because he's whippet thin now. But his hair is still perfect. David, on the other hand, is uglier than ever. Always one of the least attractive dudes in rock 'n' roll, he now has these huge grey muttonchop sideburns, which with the 40 pounds he's picked up, makes his face look huge. His rapidly receding hairline is badly set off by a tumble of stringy hair. The two of them are a perfect couple.
Going back for round two tonight!
Chester River Runoff~check them out, they insanely good!!!
I saw Furthur @ Red Rocks last night! They did a really good 2nd set Estimated Prophet > Eyes of the World > Fire on the Mountain. Going back for round two tonight!I bet this was great. Last spring, I saw Furthur in Broomfield.

Set 1: Truckin' > New Speedway Boogie, Cosmic Charlie, West L.A. Fadeaway, Deep Elem Blues, Friend of the Devil, Ashes & Glass, Casey Jones
Set 2: Scarlet Begonias > Big Bad Blues > Mountains of the Moon > Estimated Prophet > Eyes of the World > Fire on the Mountain > Death Don't Have No Mercy > Uncle John's Band > Not Fade Away E: Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
First night. Right on the money! They did one of those shows that starts real loose and then by mid first set it just came together. They did a good Cosmic Charlie and Casey Jones (a new sounding take on the song). Second set was the best Dead music I've heard live since Ratdog in '07 (or was it '08). Anyways, the setlist speaks for it's self. The Estimated thru Uncle John's was magic!! I notice that Furthur is doing a lot of continuous transitions into the next song. (No breaks between songs).
9/25/10 (Sat) Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison, CO
Set 1: Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower, Alabama Getaway, Sittin' on Top of the World, High on a Mountain > Viola Lee Blues > Bertha > Viola Lee Blues > Cumberland Blues > Viola Lee Blues
Set 2: Mountain Song > I Know You Rider > Terrapin Suite > The Eleven > Unbroken Chain > Dark Star > Stella Blue > The Other One E: One More Saturday Night
I was talking about a Help> Slip> Franklin's in the lot before the show, and sure enough. It's always cool when you call the opener. A slightly more structured show. Some new songs(I think): Sittin' on top of the World (an old school song, I think), High on a Mountain (a Phil song, I think). Awesome Cumberland! I love that song! Second set flowed like a Rocky Mtn creek. Not quite the first night, but still really good. Rider> Terrapin Suite> The Eleven stand out in my mind. The Stella Blue was sung by John Kadlecik (formerly with DSO). It was eerie, he sounded hauntingly like Jerry. I'm not sure how to feel. Made me wish I could have seen Jerry more then the one time that I did. (I'm just young enough). We were trying to call the encore without thinking of what day it was. Couldn't be more obvious.
Jeff Chimenti on keys and Joe Russo on drums. They get better and better every time I see them. Although I do miss Jay Lane. But when Primus calls, you got to answer.
Regrettably, I couldn't make the final night. They are ripping out a second set as I write these words. If it's any thing like the first two nights, folks are in for a treat!
The fat man melts, but the thin man spits. Cheers!
I, for one, like Kadlicik in the Jerry spot. He isn't the most inventive guitar player but least they now sound like the Grateful Dead. For years they ran away from it. I remember seeing The Other Ones at Alpine Valley in a three guitar player lineup, driving to the climax of Morning Dew. I thought, this is really good Lynyrd Skynyrd. The current band never sounds like Lynyrd Skynyrd.
On a side note more so than usual I had noticed in the lot there were a ton of people begging for tickets for 20, 30 bucks or FREE. This makes me wonder since the show wasn't sold out, why do these people think they deserve to see something for free that we all paid for? What happened to supporting the band? 70 bucks is a little high but were talking Phil and Bobby at red Rocks in September?? Worth every penny.
saw my friends' kick ass blue grass band at the beach last night. Chester River Runoff~check them out, they insanely good!!!
Mrs Chairman, I'm friends with all those guys too! Used to see them at Andy's in Chestertown all the time and was just at Ben's place eating crabs a couple weeks ago. Awesome.

I always loved Bad Company back in the '70s. They were my hard rock band. Sure, I liked Led Zep - I saw Led Zepellin in concert - but the pop guy in me enjoyed the crisp style of Bad Company more. They did not disappoint last night. From the strong Can't Get Enough Of Your Love opener through a steamy Stormy Monday closer, they rocked the room. I had forgotten how good the second or third single on a Bad Company record was. Moving On, Honey Child and Oh, Atlanta are all rock 'n' roll gems. The older crowd rocked back when needed although they did like to sit down (I had a large, empty space behind me so needless to say, I was up dancing early). When singer Paul Rodgers insisted the crowd get on their feet for Shooting Star, and then ask us to alone sing the last verse, accompanied only by the drums, we responded. It was a room of fans. It's easy to sing a chorus, and not too much tougher to sing the first verse, but to know the last verse by heart, that means you're a fan.
At times it was easy to laugh at Bad Company's antics. I sure did when they first turned on the fog machine. But Bad Company are pros and knew to limit such tricks. They only used the fog machine twice. Plus it's like watching an old western, like Stagecoach with John Wayne or High Noon with Grace Kelly and Gary Cooper. The are both ridden with cliched scenes and dialog, but only because they were some of the first movies to use these trite moments. You can get away with cliches when you originate them. Bad Company was a true rock supergroup, with the members coming out of King Crimson, Free and Mott the Hoople. They earned their place in rock. So whether it be the stack of Marshall amps behind guitarist Mick Ralphs, the leather bell bottoms on the bass player or even Rodgers stroking his phallic mic stand during Feel Like Making Love, I'll give them a pass. "Bad Company til the day I die."
Dirty grimey filthy deep industrial dubstep and drum and bass. What a party. Fantastic sound, deep bass, and a packed house going absolutely bonkers from when the doors opened right til closing. What can I say, the kids, they love the dubstep.

Shows are all on ustream (sound is right out of the mixer) if anyone's into this sort of thing.
also saw some local music (various members of east cameron folkcore) at a neighborhood bar. it was a memorial for a friend of theirs that passed away. great music, touching show.
the night before last i saw phish. they killed it.
today i'll see rebelution, a reggae band out of san diego, (which means a whales vagina).
Leftover Salmon with Page, Yonder Mountain String Band with Fishman, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Trey and Mike acoustic duo, String Cheese Incident with Trey, and a super bluegrass throw down with all 6 of SCI, Jeff Austin, Drew Emmitt, Vince Herman, Bill McKay, Andy Thorn, Tyler Grant, Big Head Todd, Bonnie Paine, and Jeremy Lawton? I believe.
Last night my soul and internal organs were lovingly massaged by Jah-Son and Nickel B of Bass Culture and Logo and Haitian of 2KDeep at Foundation, a semi-regular electronic music industry mixer for VT. (Sounds funny I know, but there's a nice scene up here).
They played vinyl sets of deep dub bass with minimal dub style MCing early in the evening. There were only a couple dozen people there at the time, we all got a treat. Not so much hard whomp thats associated with dubstep, but more of a rolling earthquake.
Plus there were hors d'ouvres including wings and mini-pigs in blankets, plus champagne. So that was a treat too.
As it got later, the room filled up and the djs turned over to a style I'm not so smitten with, plus I had to work today, so we took off. Its generally a good bet that if people are projectile dancing (i.e. slinging various-shaped glo things on strings around them like nunchuks) I'm taking off...
i saw bob dylan a few nights ago. first time seeing him. i was very impressed. 50 years later, and he is still loaded with energy.
Really bummed I missed Furthur on Wednesday night in Baltimore. Hope those of you who made enjoyed the show. I'd love to hear it, but $15 bucks for a MP3 download is outrageous! It's like they are driving me into the illegal download market on purpose.
tim fite is incredible. artist, singer, songwriter, rapper, rambo lover. so entertaining, so intelligent, so funny. many of his albums are free so if you've never heard of him, go here: www.timfite.com
i saw mike gordon last night at beachland ballroom. he definately knows how send minds to new places. it was the drummers birthday (who also was from cleveland). they gave him a cake with candles on it. 2 sets, no opener. great lights. great improvs. great venue. it was a fun night
I'm a little late but Maceo Parker & Karl Denson's tiny universe. They are touring together, Maceo is an absolute funk legend and Karl can hold his own pretty damn well too.

Friday night (actually Saturday morning) 10 of us from Burlington went up to a club called Stereo in Montreal to see Richie Hawtin headline with Gaiser and Layo & Bushwacka. I won't bore you with details on the music, but suffice it to say that Hawtin is and has been a heavyweight for years.
But the sound system in this place is something to behold. It has been ranked as one of the top 10 in the world for a club its size (capacity around 500-600 we were guessing), and I can believe it. There are 4 towers, one at each corner of the floor, and the tweeters are bigger than the subs in most places. The djs monitors deliver more sound than the house stacks in most places. And they control it. You feel the music as much as you hear it. You can literally be standing in front of the stacks and have a conversation with the person next to you. I had earplugs, but did not use them, and there was no ringing afterwards. We were all commenting that health insurance should have paid for our night because it was like a 6 hour massage of our internal organs. Vibration of life all the way.
We left around 8:30 or 9:00, got back to BTV late morning, and unwound and chilled at the 2KDeep lair all afternoon before heading back to our place to sleep the sleep of death in preparation for...
Sunday Night Mass at Metronome (upstairs from Nectar's) in BTV. Justin Martin out of San Francisco was booked as the headliner and it is not an overstatement to say that he is currently one of the better djs in the world, as well as one of our personal favorites. We actually thought our friends were pulling our leg when they confirmed he'd be coming to our little home club.
The sound system at Metronome is nothing to sneeze at, but is not comparable to what we experienced at Stereo. The music, technical prowess, and overall vibe, however, exceeded sky-high expectations. We were expecting fairly minimal tech house, but were treated to a variety of styles, absolutely seamlessly overlayed and mixed. Not a dull moment nor letdown in his 2 hour set. Luckily we had scheduled Monday morning off, and wisely skipped the afterparties. If you're even remotely interested in electronic music, Justin Martin of DirtyBird Records is someone to look out for.
I was in Scottsdale for the holiday week with the family and to catch my flight back home to Chicago today I decided to stay at a hotel downtown Phoenix. My brother and his wife were also staying down there and had tickets for the Jim Gaffigan comedy show. I went on ticketbastard to try to find a ticket to go along with them and saw that Roger Waters was playing two blocks from the hotel! AHHHHH! I told them "fuck the comedy show, I'M GOING TO THE WALL!". Went down to the arena about 20 minutes before showtime to score a ticket but the cheapest I could find from a scalper was $120 (face was $150-$225 I think). I didn't want to spend more than $60 so I waited around for a few and let it get pretty close to lights down then made the rounds again. After some intense negotiation with a sketchy scalper I got in the door for $35. Not bad!
The show was simply amazing. As relevant today as it was thirty years ago, maybe more. The sound was great, the music was, well you know, and the stage show was as visually stunning as anything I have ever witnessed. Full-on, nothing left out production of a masterpiece.
For all you Left-Coasters, I highly recommend you catch it in the coming weeks. I'd pay $200 to see it again.
Just finished watching the Silo Effect, a four piece electronic jazz-fusion band out of Richmond, VA. They were the band mentioned at the end of TWoL #57 with @Adam. They played a small little VB bar at the oceanfront down the street from my place. Pretty standard crowd for a Thursday night really; you had your typical wooks, your college kids, friends of the band, and the rowdy ones. Over all I would say it was a good show. They have a really electronic sound and some times I do get a little upset with the idea that lots of the sound is not actually being produced onstage, but it's fun to watch your friends play. The lack of lyrics, bounce, and ever chaining flow can be frustrating with almost all jamtronica/electronica bands though. I guess it's why I am not crazy about the genera. Great lights! My friend Alex runs their light board and is really coming on, he's been at it for several months and invests a good bit of his own cash into his passion. If your in or around the Richmond area or attend a festival in VA or the Mid-Atlantic later this summer/year try and check them out.
Hope we keep posting on this thread people. I know we see a lot of shows between all of us and I do enjoy reading about what else you guys are into musically.
bernie worell at the bitter end last night. love me some jazz/funk.
Hope you people caught some live music this week/weekend. It's good for the soul you know.
