where's a good place to start with that show im a simpsons noob and have heard good things...

what are some of your favorite episodes/recommendations?

DrPeterVenkman Permalink
DrPeterVenkman Find some one with the DVD collection, I have them and CHERISH them as much as my Phish stuff. While the first two seasons are of course crucial, it REALLY gets good in the third season. It's in syndication all over the place so you COULD just jump in and swim in that. Check out The Simpsons Movie that came out a couple of years ago as well.

It's a HUGE catalog, you've got some catching up to do.

OhOhFee PLEASE show them one of these 3 episodes:
The one with Stampy the Elephant
The one with Lisa's bad trip
Lisa on ICe (the greatest Ralph Wiggum quote ever..Me Fail English? That's Unpossible!"

_________________________ I forget what it is called, but in the 3rd season there is an episode about the Springfield Power Plant softball team, and Mr. Burns goes all George Steinbrenner and gets pro players to work at the plant to so that they can win the league. Also there is an episode where the kids from the next town over, Shelbyville, steal a lemon tree from Springfield

lol, they find a candy wrapper and Milhouse says "those Shellbyville kids are always eating candy, they loooooove the sweet taste!" One of my favorite lines!! I don't know where to start, anywhere is good!

"Hmm, what should we do here? Ok, Daryl, hit a home run!"

"OK" *hits a home run*

Just remember there is no requirement about the order you watch things in. I first started my simpsons love with the 300th episode, which was a very strange episode...

BarryAlive Yes! My three obsessions: Phish, Grateful Dead, and The Simpsons!

I'm kind of old-school, so I think the sweet spot is seasons 4 through 8. If I had to name a "perfect" season though, it would be 4. All classics, no clunkers. That said, I felt the show started slipping seasons 9-12, but 13 was just released on DVD, and that's damn good too.

Here are some classic episodes I would recommend to a noob:

*Homer The Heretic (season 4)
*Mr. Plow (season 4)
*Duffless (season 4)
*Last Exit To Springfield (season 4) sited by many critics as the best. Episode. Ever. :)
*Homer's Barbershop Quartet (season 5) if you're a Beatles fan, you'll love this one
*Cape Feare (season 5)
*$pringfield (season 5)
*Deep Space Homer (season 5)
*Grandpa Vs. Sexual Inadequacy (season 6)
*Homer the great (season 6) another one the critics like
*Homie The Clown (season 6)
*King-Size Homer (season 7)
*Two Bad Neighbors (season 7) the George Bush (Sr.) episode- It's awesome.
*Homer's Enemy (season 8) Frank Grimes!
*Lisa The Simpson (season 9)
*Natural Born Kissers (season 9)
*Homer Simpson In: "Kidney Trouble" (season 10)
*Pygmoelian (season 11)

Well I'll stop there- I could go on and on. Happy to hear you're taking the plunge!

Oh, and here's a good resource for episode info-

tweezersqueezer The Simpsons are the BEST ever!!! IMO I would stay away from The Simpsons Movie (for now) it's not the greatest way to get a feel for the comedy some of the jokes and scenes even feel forced. Not to mention a lot of inside jokes that only frequent Simpsons viewers would catch on to. I would start in the early years and work your way up. This will help you get a good grasp on the history and how the Simpsons have evolved (voices, anima, plots ect.) The new stuff is good with great audio/animation but they have done it all now and some episodes just seem weird like they’re running out of ideas. Up until maybe 2005 i had seen just about all the episodes but have grown out of them. Now I just like hitting up the box sets for the classics. Have fun, puff a bowl if ya like and laugh hard.

Catapult Permalink
Catapult The greatest show of all time!

my favorite seasons are 4-9 (but really they're all good)

2 of my favorites are from season 8

The Mysterious Voyage of Homer
Homer trips balls after he eats the Merciless Pepper of Quetzalacatenango (grown deep in the jungle primeval by the inmates of a Guatemalan insane asylum!)

Homer vs. The Eighteenth Amendment
Alcohol is banned in springfield and Homer becomes a bootlegger!

MountainKung303 If I had to pick one favorite TV show, it would be The Simpsons.

Just start with the first 7 seasons, in order. Some of the most groundbreaking, hysterical television ever made. There are a lot of other great animated sitcoms on, but Simpsons is the original and the best.

I have been watching since the begging and you should watch from the start. But if I had to say the best seasons 4 to 9 the classics are all from then. I like in no particular order. Homer in the whacking day episode, Homer in space, homer vs New York, Lisa the vegetarian, Lisa on ice, there are so many ill stop there I can go on forever. "Greatest show ever"

"Mattingly! I thought I told you to trim those sideburns!" Was just talking about that episode yesterday.

My all-time favorite is the one with "Sherry Bobbins". "Just do a half-assed job!"
