The external hard-drive data recovery thread!

stagebanter Permalink
I recently volunteered to try to rescue CaptainPookie's data from his external hard drive. I am willing to provide this service to other heads who have suffered a casualty... I know how devastating it can be to lose all those shows, photos, etc.! If you are interested, PM me and I will send you my address/let you know when I am available to help you. All you need to do is pay for shipping... I haven't yet figured out how I'm going to send your data back to you. Any ideas, post them here.

I am also going to write a basic data recovery tutorial later if/when I have time.

If you have time on your hands and need to recover data, google "ddrescue" and see if you can get it to run in cygwin. This site might have a Windows copy, I haven't tried:

If you use Mac, Darwinports has ddrescue. Not sure about MacPorts. THIS TOOL IS AWESOME. In fact, if you send me a drive, this is the first thing I'm going to use to try to read your data.

I also have a copy of DiskWarrior that I am attempting to make functional, if anyone's interested. It is for Mac.

Yes, you can probably get information back. As you might know, when any type of file is "deleted" from a file system, it is not actually destroyed right away. Instead the file system will hide the file from view and mark it to be written over as soon as new data arrives. So, it is very important that you stop taking data right away! Every time you write to the external hard drive, you risk writing over the information that you wish to recovery.

Yes, it's true there are a TON of different programs that can recover your photos nowadays. I can really only recommend one--Mac external hard drive recovery. They are a legitimate data recovery application and if worst comes to worst, you can actually send your card to their recovery centers if the software doesn't work.

icculus23 How can I sign up? I recently lost 2.5 tbs of music and other assorted digital media and it was one of the saddest days of my life when I started calling around to realize the astronomical fees people were charging. As a a lowly peasant, the idea of spending a grand to get data back made me really angry. Let me know if you can help because I was about two days away from sending it back to seagate for warranty replacement.

chris200w I support this thread. It's great to know how to recover data as a last resort, but please, folks, back up your data! It is so much easier to pull a few DVDs off the shelf or plug in another external hard drive when (not if) your primary goes belly-up than it is to figure out a data recovery program or pay to send your hard drive somewhere. Hard drives have delicate moving parts, and they do fail.

Always maintain at least two copies of any data that you even remotely care about. Data that is absolutely critical and cannot be lost should be backed up off-site too. Most college students (I think) are aware enough to make backups of thesis/capstone project type work, but imagine being a week away from finishing a major project and losing all your backups to a fire/theft. If my apartment burned down my Phish collection would be the least of my concerns, but there are files out there that are absolutely irreplaceable.
