favorite back to back barn burners!

MiguelSanchez Permalink
MiguelSanchez alright guys, i've been on a bit of a '94 kick. i did 11/30/94 last night and 12/1 today, which makes for an ass kicking two shows in a row.

which leads me to the question, what's the best/your favorite back to back nights.

i am leaning toward the holier than thou 11/21-22/97 hampton run. a close 2nd, maybe first, would have to be 10/31/96 and 11/2/96.

give it to me!

Thunder i just watched 12/29 & 12/30 1997 last week. Talk about two back to back killer shows!

You can download the vids from livephish.com. They are worth every penny. Two of my all time favs.

MiguelSanchez ^^ yeah, those 2 certainly qualify as contenders!! personally, i like the 29th a bit better, despite being a freak for sneaking sally. i just love the bowie> possum. they did what they did at the spectrum in the fall but even better!

for this debate, halloween '94 is a great "hinge"show. you could also argue 10/31 and 11/2, with the massive bangor, me tweezer as great "2 night stretches."

MiguelSanchez yeah, the festies are kind of a gimme i guess. i LOVED that louisville show before halloween '95. it's a true "hidden gem" on that fall tour. i love that melt in the first set and the makisupua> bowie in the 2nd set.

The two nights in Albany to close fall '97......some pretty serious shit right there.

-Mike > Llama..... pretty unruly

December 12, 1997

Pepsi Arena, Albany, NY

Set 1: Funky Bitch -> Also Sprach Zarathustra > Camel Walk, Taste > Bouncing Around the Room, Tweezer > Train Song > Character Zero

Set 2: Saw It Again[1] -> Piper[2] > Swept Away > Steep > Prince Caspian > Jam[3] -> Izabella, Tweezer Reprise

Encore: Guyute, Run Like an Antelope[4]

[1] Extended jam.
[2] Birds of a Feather tease.
[3] Bears a similarity to Llama.
[4] Buried Alive tease from Trey.

Notes: Saw It Again featured an extended jam. Piper included a distinct Birds of a Feather tease, several months before the song actually debuted. The jam after Caspian ended bore a similarity to Llama. Antelope contained a Buried Alive tease from Trey. The opening act was J. Willis Pratt & We're Bionic.

December 13, 1997

Pepsi Arena, Albany, NY

Set 1: Ya Mar[1] > Axilla > Theme From the Bottom, Ginseng Sullivan, Strange Design, Sample in a Jar, Vultures, Tube, Good Times Bad Times

Set 2: NICU > Punch You In the Eye > Ghost > Mike's Song[2] -> Llama, When the Circus Comes, Weekapaug Groove -> Catapult -> Weekapaug Groove, Harry Hood

Encore: My Soul, The Squirming Coil

[1] Unfinished.
[2] Funkytown tease, Foxy Lady quotes from Fishman, and chants to "Bring in the Dude."

Notes: Ya Mar was unfinished. Mike’s Song included a Funkytown tease, Foxy Lady quotes from Fishman, and some memorable vocal interplay from the band that included a chant to “Bring in the Dude.” During Hood, Trey asked Chris Kuroda to turn off the lights for a Blackout Jam and the audience responded with a shower of green glowsticks. The opening act was J. Willis Pratt & We're Bionic.

4/2/98 ----> 4/3/98

or

4/4/98 -----> 4/5/98

You people had such good shows in the 90's. If I had to pick two back to back 3.0 nights I would say:

Augusta -----> Utica is fire. Not many people likely saw both because of the insane drive. If you did I can't imagine what your mind was like. Perfect I bet.

Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA

Set 1: Emotional Rescue[1] > Split Open and Melt[2], Beauty of My Dreams, Dogs Stole Things, Punch You In the Eye -> Lawn Boy[3] > Chalk Dust Torture, Prince Caspian[4]

Set 2: Ghost > AC/DC Bag -> Slave to the Traffic Light, Loving Cup

Encore: Guyute

[1] Phish debut.
[2] Emotional Rescue quotes at end.
[3] "Anti-drum solo," Emotional Rescue quote at the end.
[4] Unfinished.

Notes: Emotional Rescue made its Phish debut at this show. Rescue was subsequently quoted at the end of Melt and Lawn Boy. This humorous Lawn Boy featured an “anti-drum solo” - an intentionally boring one. Caspian was unfinished. The first set ended with the delay loop ending of Caspian played until after lights were brought back up. Trey teased Call to the Post prior to Guyute. This show was released as part of the Hampton/Winston-Salem '97 boxed set.

November 22, 1997

Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA

Set 1: Mike's Song[1] -> I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove, Harry Hood > Train Song, Billy Breathes, Frankenstein > Izabella

Set 2: Halley's Comet > Tweezer[1] > Black-Eyed Katy > Piper > Run Like an Antelope[2]

Encore: Bouncing Around the Room > Tweezer Reprise

[1] BEK teases.
[2] Lyric changed to "Michael Esquandolas."

Notes: Mike's Song and Tweezer both contained BEK teases, with the ones in Tweezer taking place well before the segue into BEK. Fans of stage banter will want to seek out the second set for Trey’s humorous response to the crowd’s Destiny Unbound chant before Halley’s. The "Marco Esquandolas" lyric in Antelope was changed to "Michael Esquandolas." This show was released as part of the Hampton/Winston-Salem '97 boxed set.

the island tour was nasty! i have contested ever since i got those tapes that they are the best 4 consecutive shows phish ever played. every set would pass as an exemplary 2nd set. there's nothing to throw away there, and they really pushed the limits on that run. this is in no way a knock against '98, but it's too bad that year peaked on the random four night run they did right off the bat!

Everyone gives the 4th show much deserved love, but I thought the boys really killed on the 3rd as well.

Set 2: Timber (Jerry) > Wolfman's Brother -> Boogie On Reggae Woman > Reba[3], Guyute > Possum[4]

Encore: A Day in the Life

[1] Unfinished.
[2] Rocky Mountain Way tease.

[4] "Charge!" teases.

Notes: Psycho Killer was unfinished. JJLC included a Rocky Mountain Way tease. The jam after Tube was basically a Tube Reprise without the lyrics. First night at Star Lake they played a sick Gumbo with a Franklin's Tower tease then later Crosseyed and Painless and a very cool Theme. Next night at Darien Lake the boys shared the stage with Kesey and the Pranksters!

that's funny, i was about to come back on today and mention these two shows. after sort of panning the albany run, this was going to be my first example of another '97 fall duo that blows those 2 out of the water! great back to back shows!!
