ALRIGHT! ive been into phish for a couple years now and I think what these guys are doing now sounds just as good if not better than before the hiatus? what do you guys think? do i just need to explore more or is what i heard on nye this year as good as it gets..
IMO
each style is great in it's own way, and to each their own in choosing a favorite

86-89 is phish's birth, 94-95 is upbeat, raging phish, 97-98 id funky phish, 99-hiatus is ambience. today is thought out, almost progressive phishCouldn't agree more...but 97-00 was alotta the phunk! But, they could bring the ambiance* segues, it would be great to have back!

It's definitely an evolution of sound. Personally, I prefer shows today with the massive set lists and upbeat energy versus the four song second sets of the late 90's. That said, it's probably because that's what they're playing now. In the late 90's I would drool over a 90minute piper> ghost> twist.
Seems to me whatever they did at the last show is what I like best.

If the live stuff 3.0 is doing continues to get stronger each tour and they throw a little more of the Seven Below> Ghost type jamming from Albany 09' I might say they are peaking again.
I really like Phish from pretty much every era, but I definitely like RunawayCory's explanation as 3.0 almost being a progressive era (although they have brought elements of the past back like @MrMiner said).
When I question phish's jamming prowess, I am reminded of Albany 09 when they broke into 40 minute territory with the Seven Below> Ghost. This proved to me that they still have the impromptu skills of previous years. Look at that epic 15 minute Chalkdust from Camden '10, right? that was totally a "ok, we're sounding good, let's see if everybody wants to come along for this ride" type jam. They've definitely still got "it" and I think they can only get better from here on out. Honestly they sounded different as they evolved through all of their eras, but I think they can mimic each of these styles, no problem.
now, i think they are still getting it together. i think the fall tour and the new year's run showed that they might be heading back to being able to really dig deep. i think nye and 1/1/11 were freaking fantastic, but i don't think they were "as good as it gets." as long as the guys stay on the path they are on now, we are going to really hear some new shit this summer! the explorations are going to get deeper. that may not mean longer jams, but it will mean that they will be able to more with the same material. once they get their brains out of the way, the real jams will come! hell, after last year, i guess i have to say that they are already here.
personally, i think they were at their prime from '93-'98. they played with precision and their material came so naturally to them that they were able to really explore it.What he said.

Well, I am giving another listen to 1/1/11 and it is the best show of 2011, hands down!
I really think 2011 will be a great year. 2009 was on and off, but it was their first time back together in years. Summer '10 was good. Fall '10 was really good. And holiday '10 was great. And 1.1.11 was AMAZING. They're back.
