They don't play the same type of music that phish plays IMO.
Personally I'm not really a fan of jam bands, so it's hard for me to get into it...Went to bisco last year for the rest of the lineup, and the actual biscuits shows didn't really do much for me. It's more of a slow progressing rhythm than (when compared to phish) a constantly morphing piece.
But then again, alot of the beauties of phish are impossible to notice if you don't know the songs... they really get you with expectation... like you expect a certain thing to happen based on what you've heard, and something completely different happens and it blows your mind. I don't know any biscuits songs so I can't enjoy or recognize those moments.
But give it a try man, i have alot of friends who i can agree with alot of music with who love the biscuits. It's sort of electronic I guess, but not in an Electronica or IDMish way. more like dance stuff. I hate to say something that sounds this stubborn but I always secretly thought that Disco Biscuits is music to be enjoyed by "wooks", rather than musicians. It's just musically not that interesting TO ME. But then again I'm the kinda guy who can listen to delay loops and static clicks and be impressed. Give it a shot man.

think about it
they just serve to provide background music while you're rolling on X
I don't think they chose their name by coincidence
Whisker Biscuit......hehehehe
but alas, i do not hate thy bisco. i have even enjoyed the shows of theirs i saw a decade ago.(dont worry i later repented my sins lol) but they might scratch that itch for you. plenty of opinions will be heard here. go see a show. see if you dig it. I really am at a loss for what they are doing these days..i was disappointed after reading a setlist and finding out that when it says they played a song "inverted" they did not actually play while being upside down.
@TheArgus has a good point.... mindless dribble.
how is my comment thumbed down? Disco Biscuit is late 90's street slang for X (and they formed in the late 90's)not sure... i thumbed it up.... or i think i did... i sure hope i did.

If you're looking for suggestions, Widespread Panic and STS9 are mine.
I probably wouldn't be this negative about if so many people hadn't tried to ram them down my musical throat for so long, but nonetheless, I wouldn't go back to a Biscuits show if someone miracled me and gave me $20 on top of it
bad mistake there make sure you read this correction
That said, I'm not a fan of dubstep, electro, etc. Every now and then I don't mind listening to it, there's some cool stuff.
Edit, a fan of theirs showed me one of his favorite jams, it was a hammer on 1-2, 4-5 guitar riff for about 10 minute straight, repetitive as dung.
I recommend going to one of their live shows. I think its a good time, but its not for everyone. To each their own. Not all fans of the biscuits are grimey sketched out tweakers.
Biscuits are beat. Too technoy for me. Seen them a few times and they just never did it for me.
Don't expect it to be phish-like. But chances are you'll see very good musicianship, pretty insane light show, variable songwriting, and poor singing. For a ~$20 show, that's not a bad deal. When they're on, its more than worth it.
IX ---> X
Yeah Biscuits aren't like Phish. Too electronic. Got some friends that love them but I just don't understand it. I'm sure they put on a good show but there is no way they are in the same league as Phish. I feel like if I take the time to get into them and other electronic bands I'll just be contributing to the death of good music.
I'll put it this way, I have a friend who is a very skilled guitar player. He has played for years to become the guitarist he is now. Not until recently has he been able to write and play his own music. Meanwhile, I have another friend who is really into electronic and dub-step. He downloaded the software to make electronic music and within a week he was making his own songs. Shortcuts like electronically produced music are contributing to why there are only a handful of truly great musicians touring and making music these days

Its pretty obvious who knows what they're doing though with electronic music though. just because people can make an electronic song doesn't mean its good. The real problem is that people don't know what good electronic music is because they've only heard shit, or have the mentality that it's easy. I've been a "real" musician for about 11 years and I think certain electronic music is seriously more powerful than what a "real" instrument could create. There are endless possibilities with artificial sound, why not embrace that and take it as influence? Alot of it is done in ways that are way more creative than you'd think.
replace the Disco Biscuits with Moe. and Ween...
I don't care for Disco Biscuits. Boring, and the guy's voice really annoys me, and the lyrics don't grab my attention. But, that's my opinion of their music.
My question is, why does everyone knock their followers? I've never met one, so I don't know what this breed of person is like. Can someone please tell me?

to all the mentioning of good electronic and some mention of good DJs, I must submit DJ Marky and DJ Mark Farina.
Solid Stuff.
Solid Stuff.
Check them out yourself man. You'll find no help here on a Phish forum. It's no secret there seems to be some animosity between both groups, for whatever reason. I don't get it. If you wnat any suggestions of shows to check out, PM me. I'll even burn a couple of shows for you once I get back from MPP. Don't drink all the kool aid here. It's good to ask for advice when checking out new music but ultimately the music speaks to/for you, and yourself only.
And FYI. Trey judged a guitar comp back in the mid '90's that Barber was in and loved him so much when Barber used an effect, Trey jumped out of his seat cheering. (this is from the Pharmers Alamanac Vol. 5, I believe) Personally, I'm not a big fan of Barbers, but it might say something that the guy we all adore, found something incredible about him at one point. Just somethign to think about.
Wow. I'm really disappointed in the amount of tact and general knowledge here. Seems like most are just throwing out insults without giving much reason why. Bisco isn't Phish, not even close. Completly different scene, one I'm not that into but I can get into now and then. I have many friends who are hardcore Bisco fans and they are the farthest thing from spun out wooks just looking to get f***ed up. I admit, I'm not into their vocals or lyrics but I can really get into some of their jams, when they are on. This hate reminds me of the hate many Dead fans had towards Phish before they all jumped ship after Jerry died and ran where...Phish tour. Check them out yourself man. Just somethign to think about.Well, look at how much music gets passed around, positively supported and recommended on here, without hardly ever a negative post about it; I think it says something about them that the only band that raises comparable ire on this forum is DMB.
Edit: And I'll admit I make jokes about DMB all the time, but for the most part it's all in jest. People liek what they wanna like. I know how it feels for people to hate on Phish without really knowing what it's all about. many of my family and friends think it's all just a big drug party full of dirty hippies. Which I guess is true to some extent, haha, but it's for sure not the reason we spend so much time here on the forum discussing Phish. You know what I'm saying?
After gd and phish, sci and panic are the next most respectable jambands. Very different sounds, but atleast they know what they're doing in their instruments and write good songs.
my favorite band! but lately they have been meh, if you want to get into them just listen to some shows from 99-02
Nothing like phish but very talented. Listening to "house dog party favor" with travis tritt from the jammys while I get ready to leave for yasgurs.
holla, could you name a show from then? I'd like to have one to know it's a good example of a good night of theirs. thanks
i've partied with the biscuits on mulitple occasions in philly and here in baltimore...i think they are way better when they don't sing. lol..kind of like fishman. the thing i like about those guys the most is that they are just like you and me, real down to earth dudes...well barber is pretty much a functional drug addict but hey i ain't knockin him for that, im sure i would be too if i were in his shoes.

The Disco Biscuits are a decidedly post-Phish, post-Dead band; while late-90's Phish borrowed the (let's call it) developmental logic of electronica/trance/techno - slowly, organically evolving beats under morphing ambient textures and minimalist rhythms - for their acoustic/electric rock, the Biscuits basically play electronica that bears a resemblance to rock music.
Unlike Phish's music, the Biscuits' stuff is pure dance music - they're more closely related to DJ culture than, say, the Dead's traveling freak show. Their music is all about 'tribal' beats, 'primal' energy, real rave-culture stuff. The drugs are different from Phish-lot drugs, just as Phish's late-90's scene differed chemically from the Dead's lysergic heyday.
You can have a really good time zoning out and following the smooth flow of their endless jams. That's what their music is for - hence the central importance of the light show/visuals and the comparative weakness of their recorded music.
Now let's be honest about their limitations.
The Biscuits' vocals are bad. Not 'an acquired taste': bad.
Their songwriting is simplistic and repetitious. This is the biggest deal with 'jam bands': pretty much no Phish-inspired band has a composer with Anastasio's reach (though bands like The Slip certainly have their own strong voices).
Their chops are good but their improvisations lack the sense of wide-open silliness that characterizes Phish's stuff.
You're better off just not bothering with the Biscuits, if you ask me. Try Zappa instead. Or mid-70's electric Miles.
Try listening to moe., STS9, Lotus, Keller Williams and String Cheese. All awesome bands. Bisco is alright
Coming late to this thread:Agree 100%......This is a perfect description.

If you went in with zero prior knowledge to the fan base of either of these extremely talented bands (with pretty mediocre vocalists that exist only for the fun of having lyrics fans know) and an interest in progressive rock music in any why I am sure you would find a love for both these bands. The beef between the two fan bases is absolutely ridiculous when deep down were all so similar.
Recently getting into more and more bands in the genre of Phish. not sure if I wanna take the time and get into the biscuits . should i do it? Is it even worth it?I'd say, just like with any other band or artist that's "new to you," just listen for yourself. Make your own conclusions.
Personally, I definitely prefer Phish; but then, the Biscuits are really nothing like Phish, so it just depends on what you feel like dancin' to.
Phish = Rock/Blues/Jazz/Country/Bluegrass/Funk/Jamsauce/whatever-else-they-feel-like-playing
Biscuits = Jam/Trance Fusion
I'm listening to the Biscuits right now, a 31-minute version of Astronaut from Camp Bisco 7. For me, it's nice to have in the background, while I work, or on a long drive; and their shows are non-stop dance parties, which is awesome for some, repetitive for others.
Again, just listen for yourself and make your own conclusions. Music is all about how it makes you feel, not what other people say.
