What a difference...

JBthaButcher The last time I was in Pine Knob was catching Phish put on a killer show. My next trip there will be to take the Mrs. to see Pat Benatar for her birthday. Hmmm, I am not sure that show is going to 'hit' me the same way... Has anyone else seen odd shows back to back?

bostonron Most recently, I did the 3 night stand at MSG in'09, that NYE I went to Mohegan Sun with Moms to see the J. Geils Band. Decent show, I dig the classic rock and Peter Wolf has great energy, but it was a world away from what I'm use to. Free show though and we had 3rd row seats.

I did something similar. In '09 I hit the Fenway show, then saw Biscuit shows before heading to Jones Beach for the 3 night stand and Mansfield that weekend. I dig Biscuits, but seeing them in between Phish is ill advised. Such a different vibe. I'll only see the Biscuits when Phish ISN'T touring now.

Saw the American Idol Tour at Jones Beach and Phish a few weeks later. I also saw Further a week after Phish at the end of '09. It was like elevator music. Lastly, I saw Phish at U of Delaware and then Bryan Adams. Ugh.

What's the Disco Biscuits scene like that its so different than Phish. I always figured it was similar.

Bisco has a lot more techno influence. Tons of beats and stuff like that, I felt like I was at a rave at times. Plus they barely sing, and when they do it i more of a guttural growling. A lot more flat-brims at Bisco, a younger crowd than Phish, and its has more of a party atmosphere compared to a concert. More people go there to get f***ed up and hear beats, while most people go to see Phish for the tunes

MJZ1974 EDIT A few years ago my girlfriend (at that time) dragged me to Pine Knob to see Pat Bennitar. It was actually a great concert, I won't lie. It won't be as "bad" as you think.

Cool topic! I'm trying to think if I have any "weird" ones. But a few instances come to mind.

Once my brother and I did the first half of Dead tour (summer '94?) Came home from Deer Creek to pick up 2 more people before heading over to Soldier Field. On that one "off" day we went to see Crosby Stills & Nash at Pine Knob. Not that that's weird, but after like 7-8 Dead shows It was 6 straight days of concerts. 19,20,21st at Deer Creek. 22nd back home CSN Pine Knob, 23-24th at Soldier Field.

Similarly odd, once I saw Ratdog ('98?) at The State Theater, and directly next door at the same time, Sarah McLachlan was at The Fox Theater. It wasn't hard to tell who was going to see who. (Let the record show I do love Sarah though).

But maybe the oddest was when we saw The Other Ones (w/Robert Hunter) at The Palace ('02?). After the show we headed back to Detroit to some bar, only to find an AC/DC cover band playing. Still zinging off mushrooms we just sat there and laughed at how much of a difference it was within a few hours! (Read: we laughed at how bad they sucked).

It was great, but the theater where I saw Steve was hot as hell (there was no air conditioning). Slid out of my seat a few times due to sweat.

Two weeks ago went to WSP at the Woodlands Pavilllion (prob my 12th time to see them), it was a small crowd and WSP tore it the f*** up! Ended the first set with a killer Life During Wartime! I thought it couldn't get any better from there but the 2nd set and encore just blew me away! I always have a blast at their show though, and I was with my brother and some great friends so it was all to be expected...... Then last Friday went to a show in downtown Houston at Warehouse live, its a small GA venue and I have had shows/crowds be hit or miss there. Well I was there for Glitch Mob a band I hadn't even heard of but a few friends told me if I wanted to dance to some good beats then go check it out ($20 tix, so why not?). The band is 3 DJ's mixing beats and samples and that kinda shit. Took my roommate with me just spur of the moment and damn was I glad I went! I was probably one of the oldest people I saw there (and I'm 29, but look younger). We had a blast with some younger people all around us. Found a great hook-up right before Glitch went on at almost midnight and IT WAS ON!!!!! I partied and danced my ass off til 2am!!!

I have to say after the WSP concert I thought to myself "Man, if only the younger concert kids could see a crowd like this and learn how cool it can be just to leave all worldly shit behind you and just party like everyone there is your good friend." Well this show proved to me that the next generation is doing this, they just do it to different music than we do. I was high-fiving random people, was getting offerred water and anything else I could have wanted, people were getting through the packed crowd without anyone getting all pissy, I could go on and on about how cool these kids were I was dancing around and some of them were still in high school! All in all it just made me so happy about the live music world! I can't wait til UIC because I'm goin solo on 8/16 and am so pumped about the friends I haven't met yet!!!

I saw that same tour in Deer Creek (the NIN one). I'd rank that up there in my favorite concerts that I've ever seen. Before I was a Phish Phan, I was quite the mosh pitter. ha

Don't know if I'd quite go that far, but it was a good show. I thought the Jane's Addiction portion was kind of weak though. Something about Navarro and Farrell rubbing their bare chests against each other. I fully support gay rights, but that performance was a little too homoerotic for my personal taste.

I would definitely rank my one Pearl Jam show, Denver '06, among my favorites though.

TheDeerman I actually saw Rush like a week after seeing Phish at Deer Creek last summer. It killed me how there was no improvisation or setlist variation going on, but they did kick some ass.

Side note (and hilarious/embarassing "concert I've been to" ;) : I saw Def Leppard and Journey at that same Riverport venue (just outside of St. Louis) 6 years before. Journey had a 20 year old singer with the mid-50s band members, and the Def Leppard singer was simply impossible to hear. But I was in 7th grade, so it was awesome.

Edit: I do not know how that wink face got there

The three deff were different. Zac Brown band was pretty good. They played a Marley cover.

Seriously. I've seen Phish and Further a matter of days or weeks apart several times, but didn't even deem it worth mentioning in this thread 'cause both are a blast. Only difference vibe-wise is that the crowd at Further is way older yet somehow far more appreciative and less jaded. A curious phenomenon.

I'm not even going to address the differences between the Phish & Bisco crowds. Someone else can if they want.
