Exactly. I can do the math on the gross revenue from a show, but what % of that makes it into the band's hands? Not to mention, how much are they making off all the merch? I couldnt believe all the official prints i saw getting sold this summer at $50 a pop.

They are nothing but a bunch of nouveau riche snobs. I used to clean Page McConnell's pool in [REDACTED], where he still lives. Every time I tried to sing him one of my songs and tell him how good I thought it would be for Phish to do, he would get all huffy and coldshouldered. Like the rest of them, he's an effete egomaniac with some decent chops but not much else going on. I don't care how much money they make, they are still just like the rest of us ordinary folks out here.

I'm pretty sure they have plenty of money...Although, I remember hearing a couple of a while back, that they lost a lot of money due to some sort of Ponzi scheme...maybe late 90's?

They are monied, the band is profitable. It's not a pop band though, ignoring their 'wage' they are still a band that has to get up and go to work...I doubt any of the recordings are putting their kids through college, that's what SBIX was for.

Economics of scale. Right now Phish is stuck in sheds 15-30 thousand. The unmentionable most profitable live band in history pulled it off with multiple night sellout runs at Giants Stadium and RFK... That'll keep you trucking on and on and on.

You for real or being sarcastic? Phish is not wealthy, they are more than wealthy, come time late nineties to today these guys have been making pure profit. If you don't think there making money of 25,000 seat venues sold out for $60+ dollars a piece the last 3 summers then I really don't know how you have any hope of ever being successful.

Phish is rich, as they should be, they rock, sell out stadiums not as a 25 man baseball/hockey team, as a 4 man band. Yes they have a crew, but so do the respective teams. Not to mention they have been paying there crew as part of their INC. since the early 90's, that in itself is very impressive. The band is very well run, managed, and without a doubt in my mind, very profitable. As for the exact numbers Phish makes, that would be tough to ever get ahold of.

I think we are just thinking of different scales.....phish are rock star rich.....as opposed to Bill Gates rich.....as opposed to Carnegie family rich. I wasn't jerking your chain...sorry if I sounded like I was being a smart ass.....it is all about points of reference.

I'm sure the boys are comfortable....nest eggs and enough to play wherever they please....maybe just rich enough to head back for another European campaign....there would be a lot of financial risk in that endeavor....may have to take a bit of a loss to make it happen, but if well received it might work out nicely

Does anyone know how it works with the major venues? Do they get a flat fee from the artist? Do they take a % of ticket sales? Does it vary based on the venue?

The promoter puts up all the money and takes all of the risk. Usually at this level it is a flat fee that the promoter guarantees the band. Half is usually paid way in advance, the other half once the show happens. Phish makes the same amount of dough whether they sell out or not. The promoter is who makes extra dough with big sell outs. All expenses go through the promoter; i.e. security, the venue, local crew, any technical needs that the band will not provide, catering, etc. The promoter gets Phish and their crew and their leased gear for a price. The promoter gets the venue and all that they provide for a price. The promoter and the band may or may not get a cut of concessions from the venue. The promoter and the venue may or may not get a cut of merch from the band. The flat fee I guarantee you is well into the six figures, probably somewhere between two and three hundred grand. It is a complex money stream in the live music business, especially at the top level which Phish is certainly in. I worked in that industry for years.

just checked that billboard link at the top of the thread, they made 33,240,962 in 43 shows last year. that is 773k and some change per show. I was pretty close with my estimates

RunawayCory you make some decent guesstimates. but you are leaving a lot out. The security has to be paid, there are 8 semi-trucks worth of gear that need drivers, insurance, and fuel, that haul of that stuff from place to place. Thats not to mention the busses, one for each band member most likely, and then one or two for the crew. There is also insurance on the show itself, there has to be fiscal protection from what happened in Indiana the other day. I doubt very seriously if the band members are putting that much into their pockets everynight.

I manage cash control for the 2 major Philadelphia Sports Teams on premises-gameday. Figure the Football Team makes 1 million a sold out game of 70,000 seats. in cash, just in concessions (food, beer, retail merch.)
Then ya gotta figure another million in cash in parking. seriously. I know the Phils get 30 percent of the $ made in the stadium. also, keep in mind, none of this includes credit card sales. Big venues are looking to make 30-40$ a seat once the people are inside, not including ticket sales or parking.
But sports teams make all the real dough on TV stations and Advertising. A deal with coke is what really pays the athletes salaries.
