Funny. I just shake my head every time I see/hear that commercial/billboard. Although a few years back when we had a string of extended stay houseguests it wasn't so funny.

Nice - you got Rocky and Santa in one comment!

Twas my 1st show, didn't know any better. At the time, I thought I was witnessing the greatest concert in the history of Rock & Roll.

I did notice that people were sitting down for that song. I think I remarked to my brother "This must be a make-out song."

Yeah me too! Telford. In the larger world I generally tell people I'm from "near Philadelphia" but then they always start naming towns that are way way further south and closer to the city, and I have to concede that it's really not that close to Philly at all. But it's still the closest major city. Even though it's pretty darn rural out in our neck of the woods.

phishybanjo I went to Pitt. It was like the farthest I could get from home while still paying in-state tuition. Lived in Oakland and Squirrel Hill. Most importantly, I met @ivy_light who's from Mars (wonderfully named suburb of Pgh) so I still get to go back there pretty often. Only like 5 hours drive from Toronto so that's pretty easy. It's actually slightly closer to Toronto than to Philadelphia, oddly enough.
Apparently one of our netters (can't spell his handle to save my life, something like ADAWGYO) has a new restaurant on Pitt campus. I can't wait to check it out.

I went to Seoul after college to work as an English teacher. Easy job to get if you have a college degree and a pulse. It was lots of fun. Great food and beautiful women who throw themselves at you. Some epic Asian adventures. But one year was enough. I also spent three months in Tokyo a few years later, forgot to include that on the list. I think I'm a lifelong Asiaphile, but I don't really want to spend my whole life as an expat (I'm assuming that being an American in Canada doesn't really count as "expat" ;) . It's enough for me to live in a city with a large Asian population and great restaurants. Toronto is a wonderful place to live for anyone who's obsessed with foreign countries. 50% of the population here is born outside of Canada and you can find anything. I love this town.

Is this one of those programs? Would you recommend it? my little bro was looking into something like this.
Score: 0

phishybanjo Permalink
phishybanjo It sort of seemed like a "program," but in hindsight they were more of a "recruiting company." Private English schools pay them to find teachers. I highly recommend going to Asia to teach English if you want to have that kind of experience. But I often thought at the time that I should have just bought a plane ticket to Korea and found a job myself once I was there. I would rather have checked a few places out and picked one that I liked where the current teachers were happy. The advantage of setting up the job before you go is that they will pay for your plane ticket. But then you are stuck working for that school and if you don't like them (many of the owners are total assholes and treat the teachers awfully) you don't have many options but to just go home. Your visa is tied to your employment at that school.

If you go on your own, you have to pay for your own plane ticket, but you have the freedom to find a good place. You go on a tourist visa, and then when you find a job, generally they will pay for you to fly to Japan for a day or two to re-enter Korea on a work visa.

Feel free to PM me if your bro wants more detailed info. But it was already 12 years ago that I did this, so the scene may have evolved some since then.

HA! sorry dude, I have to tell this story now:

years ago my friends and I used to play an acoustic happy hour at Maggie O'Neils. We would watch the faces of bands that, after lugging their shit up a flight of steps and turning the corner, saw us and realized they would have to wait another hour or 2 until we were finished in order to set up. Usually this meant they were pissed.

Acez back to back was one of those bands one night. Some dude in Aces came up to us, infuriated that they weren't able to set up and began yelling at us during our first set break, as if we had anything to do with booking and/or ran the place.

He kept yelling/asking "Does Billy know about this?!" We have no idea who said Billy was ( and no one from the bar was named Billy)

To this day me and my buddies will yell this at each other when making plans or find out big news.

I'll try to swing up there tomorrow night (live in Delaware but work in PA)
