Mitch Hedburg is up there for me, certainly not the same style as Carlin, Pryor and Hicks but just as funny
I was saying "Escalators temporarily stairs." all week at MSG.
Would I join his/her cult?
If the answer is yes then he/she is a great comedian.
I pose 1 question when I watch a comedian.

If the answer is yes then he/she is a great comedian.
i like that theory
::stirs punch::
But Frizz is right, at the top are Carlin and Pryor. And not to hate on Chris Farley but he's WAAAAY down the list.
I will say that Farley was brilliant with his style, staying in character. Physical comedy.
Need to put Steven Wright in the top 10-15, I think.
Chappelle tweeked out. He coulda gone places. He did tweek out. But he did go places. Killing 'Em Softly ranks as an all-time great comedy concert, and For What It's Worth hangs with it toe to toe. That's before you even get to Chappelle's Show, which is EPICALLY funny.
(not Dave of course, but I love this sketch so much)
@Phish1 - I do like Steven Wright, but I think we could name 25 better before we got to him.
I'll tell you what, not the funniest guy ever but Tom Papa's recent Comedy Central special made me laugh just about non stop for an hour. It was very clean too, which is a change from most guys today.
Katt Williams also makes me piss myself.
I can't think of too many of "today's" comics that are up there. I don't know enough of them, to be honest. I've seen a few stand ups of that dude Dave Attell. He's funny as hell. That Lisa Lampo-whatever her name is can be funny for about 10 minutes.
@TheEmu..yeah, you're probably right about Steven. My own bias I think; love Steven Wright.Somebody already posted Louis CK. He's a today guy that is off the charts funny.

This, I refuse to even debate.
In the entertainment industry, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin are considered to be the Holy Trinity of stand-up comedy.See, the only thing to me about Lenny Bruce is that he was blazing a trail, but it doesn't translate to me personally. I've listened to him before, and I don't laugh like I do at Pryor or Carlin. You're absolutely right that to other comics, it all starts with Lenny Bruce. But not for me, no disrespect to the man.
This, I refuse to even debate.
Lisa Lampanelli is essentially a one-trick pony. But she is SO DAMN GOOD at that trick. Does anyone know how hard it is to say the awful things that she says and do it so skillfully that the audience, instead of rising up with torches, laughs at her, each other, and themselves? Well, I don't know either, but I can't think of anyone else who can pull that off.
One guy who I didn't think would be funny but made me choke with laughter was Doug Stanhope. I thought he'd be a more lowbrow Dane Cook or something, but son of a bitch is he funny.
Last thing, then I gotta go. Anyone who posts in this thread and hasn't seen The Aristocrats, stop and go rent it RIGHT f***ING NOW.
I got to meet this lady last weekend and it made my day.
"It's not often you talk about c***s for 10 minutes and somebody goes 'Perfect. That's what we need.'"
- Howie Mandel
See, the only thing to me about Lenny Bruce is that he was blazing a trail, but it doesn't translate to me personally.Oh no no no no...I'm not saying these are my favorite. I know its tough to separate personal bias when making a "greatest of all time" type list. Lenny Bruce was a pioneer and way before my time too, but I'm sorry he goes up before Chris Farley and Lisa Lampanelli. Lisa Lampamelli...God does she make me laugh to pieces though...
Chris Rock would probably be my 3rd (with Carlin and Pryor).
It's like Quarterbacks. Johnny Unitas was before my time too, but for sure I have to put him in the top 5 of all time. (not to sidetrack).
I immediately thought of this:
As far as the nes class goes, Chappelle is on point as is Louie CK although I don't watch nearly enough of him. If you haven't check Eddie Izzard out yet I INSIST you do (all his shows are on Netflix) PLEASE don't be put off att he fact that he wears make-up and sometimes high heels and dresses, extremely smart stand-up right there. One of the best of the new? Mitch Hedberg, god dam I miss that guy. "I had a Koala infestation in my apartment, CUTEST INFESTATION EVER."
Also, Steven Wright, "It's a small world, but I still wouldn't want to paint it."
george carline, louis ck, (young) eddie murphey, john belushi, mitch hedberg, larry david,
Hicks, Pryor, Bruce, Hedberg, yes they're all champions. Louis CK is doing phenomenal work now too.
The only comedian that I didn't see in here is Brian Regan. Stupidly funny and, for the most part, pretty "clean" humor. His wordplay and physical approach to gags is priceless. One of the best still working these days for sure.
i can't believe how long it took for Rodney Dangerfield to get on this list. He gets NO RESPECT.I realize all comedians have a "schtick" and while yes, he was funny, I don't care for things to be SO obvious. It's that very same reason I CAN'T STAND any of the "redneck comics".
@Funkty yes, Brain Regan is hilarious, I just watched some of his stuff the other night.
Also, don't sleep on Jake Johanssen, some quality delivery right there.
I also think Dane Cook is about as funny as accidentally dropping an egg.
I would like to repeatedly punch him in the face.

I saw Ellen Degeneres at the Fox Theater here a few years ago and she was absolutely hysterical.
Like 1,000% funnier than I could have guessed.
Steven Wright deserves a Tier 2 nomination in my book as well.
