im 18. just got my 10th at MSG. Ive be very lucky to have an older brother and friends to show me the ways. hopefully ill be showing the ways to some rookies in the future.
If you want to know about OUR GENERATION, heres the scoop. We have the kids who are into rap, and into electro-house whatever you want to cal it. I can understand some rap being good, but that was the stuff produced late 90's, good beats and good rhymes (People Under the Stairs, Outkast, Biggie). Now you have drake, wayne, idk whoever else is crying in every song and repeating 3 words the entire time its straight garbage. Nobody wants to f*** with you clique, Kanye you skirt wearing, sandy concert ruining piece of crap. As for the electronic music I know all of you loathe, it is an excuse to do E. To me, it all sounds like Tetris music and robot fart noisese. Its not even hard to make. I make fun of all of my friends whenever I here it. "Wait for the drop, wait for the drop". Im like "wait for the f***in trampoline jam in this YEM!"
Phish isnt going to pick up like it did in the 90's with our generation. To be honest most of our generation doesnt have or deserve the refined taste in music. Many people are resistent, even those who enjoy instruments. Its the sad truth. I saw The Main Squeeze the other day here in AA, definitely give these guys a shot. Really really cool stuff for some young guys. Felt like I was having a Phish @ anywhere pre '93 night. Small crowd, good grooves.
I grew up in bing.. lived in vestal my whole life didnt meet any phish fans till i came down here to nc
...sigh.
but time weaves out the posers from the true heads.
I am 20. I know 1 person who likes phish, even though she isn't a huge phan or anything. She did get to go to the 2012 NY's run because her friend had tickets. I was jealous. So yeah most people my age that I know are into rap and dubstep. It's alright though, more excellence I get to play in my ears for myself

In college I have met a few heads, but I go to a really small school, so whenever I discover someone is a Phan, I get giddy haha. From my point of view, young phans are rare from what I have seenI live on cape too. There's a lot of heads around these parts.
I am just starting to discover that. There aren't many younger heads in these parts though, lots 30+ though
On a side not, I do feel a little bad for the younger kids... I used to be able to go to 4-5 shows and only spend $100
He spent 200 on just tix and transport.. I had to take care of his other stuff cause he just can't afford it... But then again the younger ones are spoiled with sound quality, ease of access to shows and f***in YouTube... I mean they are really lucky these days... Oh yeah I'm 30
actually 28....we have a pretty good crew in the dmv that hits up mucho shows. the dmv has a good mix of fans of all ages. i know 45 year old fans and 18 year old fans...you just have to find them
Any dutch phans by the way?
Nederlandse phans hierzo, trouwens?

18 years old, and from the Netherlands. Yep, pretty rare! And because of two friends and me, our hangoutgroup like phish to. But they don't really get IT.Awesome man! For your sake I hope the boys have another European tour so you can enjoy what we do every summer here in the states.

I must say I am surprised by all the young fans coming out in this thread(guess I shouldn't be since this is a phish message board)! I really feel like I am not seeing that many at shows. In my group I am the youngest and I'm 28. Most of my phish buddies are in their mid 30s and started seeing Phish in 92-94.

I'm a senior in high school right now, turn 18 on Sunday. There's only about 3-4 other heads at my school, and a few others that would go to a show with us.From which Mike graduated.
All but one of my close friends hate them though![]()
I also go to the high school that Mike Gordon graduated from :p
Sorry, I couldn't resist! Haha, I'm just joshing ya.
I"m 21 and go to college in St. Louis. (Phish played here at Chaifetz).
Sadly I do not know many phans. Of Everyone I know, I can say I know at most 10 people who are into phish and/or all jam bands.
I started listening to the dead in high school and maybe there was 1 or 2 other people there that were into them but I didn't know anyone.
It kind of sucks because this music, Phish, is really awesome. Luckily I hang out with people who have excellent taste in music aside from Jam Bands.
If you want to find the young kids listening to good music look for the hipster crowd. That's where the music "scene" is right now. The whole indie thing basically. Animal Collective and Dan Deacon are dope and should be listened to by all. Flying Lotus I think is pretty good. There are a lot of good bands out right now (Tame Impala is good too, very psychedelic) but the problem is they are all just about songs and albums. Which is fine, however you don't have a live touring act that has captured hearts and souls.
Phish certainly still has phans among the younger crowd but they are a small minority. The problem is that Phish doesn't tour as much, and when they do their prices are more expensive than they used to be.
To go to 1 show costs at least a 50 dollar ticket. Do you know how hard it is to convince a poor ass college student to spend that kind of money on a band they aren't very interested in? It's very difficult. It's the same problem with Furthur or any of those bands.
Really the only place I know where everyone seems to knows Phish and The Grateful Dead is Colorado. Everywhere else, especially in the midwest they are hard to come by.

im a younger phan, 21 years old. I know like 3 other people our age who like phish, and even then theyll catch maybe one show a year.
that being said, if any other philly phans want to meet up at a bar and talk some phish, or rage a show this summer, id probably be down.

I'm curious to hear how you discovered phish being from the Netherlands.

From what it seems like to me there isn't many. I'd probably say for the under 25 crowd maybe 3 out of 10 people know (and that's being a little generous), and under 18, 1 out of 10. I got into Phish when I was 16 (when they were something I thought I'd only be able to watch on DVD), and I can tell you I was definitely the only one of my friends that was into them. 26 shows later, I find that I tend to be the youngest person when I meet new Phans at shows. Here in Richmond, VA where the scene around here is very festie, jammy, hippie, dubsteppy, I feel a lot more people know who they are, but probably still don't really listen. I probably only have 3-4 really close friends that are big Phans and just a couple others that would just "like to attend a show"
I'm 35 now but started listening to Phish when I was 15. A summer camp counselor gave me some tapes, he was at Emory Univ. at the time. You gotta start somewhere... Saw my first show 2 years later and the rest is history....
Gotta say I don't see too many younger phans at shows.... Maybe I'm just not lookin hard enough though

The only problem is, it'd be the same thing over and over and over, and extremely boring.
I went and saw Tiesto recently (mainly because some cute college girls lured me into going with them)... It was crap. They loved the shit out of it. Of course it wasn't all bad... except it was BORING. the music was the same, over, and over, and over. I heard one song, with 20 different titles that night. Seems like kids care more about drugs, getting sweaty, and BITB's at those types of events. I mean it wasn't all bad. I took these girls to their first 2 phish shows too, about a month prior-- night 2 and 3 dicks last year. They loved the shit out of that too. Of course, there were drugs, people sweating, and they had my BITB as well.
Anyway, I agree with a lot of the things said in this thread.

I could write a large essay on this subject, but here are some scattered thoughts.
Judging by the amount of younger phans that posted on this thread I'd say we are definitely out there, but has Phish ever had the majority of a random high school class be phans?
I'm 20 and got introduced to Phish at the summer camp I went to by some cool counselors in about 2003. The first songs I heard were Contact and Bug performed by 2 counselors acoustically for vespers(singing songs around a campfire). I started listening to other less jammy stuff(didn't have the patience for 20 minutes songs then) at first along with some other friends in middle school, but besides one of my friends who was a die-hard phan from day 1, we all just thought phish was a good band, not the best. It wasn't until I saw em live for the first time in '09 at mansfield where I was hooked for life! Amazing show, and they played bug for the 2nd set closer and contact for the encore!! My friends thought the same, and we have the same crew of 5 we try to see as many shows as we can together, which is around 20-25 for all of us. Along the way we have definitely converted at least 10 or more kids, but always from a live show, not just playing their music.
I'm from New England and I'd say Phish is pretty big there still, with at least a good handful of kids from every school Phans. I go to college in Colorado now though and it's so different! Definitely much bigger Jam band scene, but definitely less people call Phish their favorite. Much more older phans I'd say(average age at dick's was around 30), with the younger kids into jam bands love String Cheese, STS9, and Lotus(all good bands, but nothing close to Phish).
I'll finish this rant with the difference in music listeners today with even 20 years ago. There are two kinds of listeners: people that listen to whats cool, and people that listen to what they truly like. There's always been the people that listen to whats cool, it's called pop music. Then there are people that listen to what they truly like, those are Phish phans. The thing about music now though is there are so many different genres, and so many smaller bands that are able to been seen that it's hard for any non-pop band to get such a large following. I predict as time goes on, there will be less huge bands and many more medium-sized bands. It's already happening in Colorado.

From Urbandictionary.com:
UBIB stands for "Unwanted Boner In Back"edit: I need to get this shirt!
Originally conceived among the Phish crowd, this phenomenon occurs when a dude is dancing so close to you that his boner can be felt pressed up against your back. While it is generally concurred that such an occurrence is a breach of reasonable conduct, UBIB's remain rampant among concert goers.
"I thought I was dancing with a chick, until I felt a raging UBIB and realized it was a wook!"
"As Trey shredded a machine gun solo, an epidemic of UBIB's surged through the crowd, clearing the already scarce amount of chicks from the front row."
I hope you're right about people being more tolerant about other types of music nowadays, but I cannot agree with you about the stuff on the radio. The day I listen to "call me maybe" on the radio and think it's not all that bad is the day I give up on popular music in the 2010's.[/quote]
I could say the same thing about the 60s when The Archies released "Sugar Sugar". Or in the 70s when "Stayin' Alive" came out. You're just choosing to quote the bad songs.
