Fishman lead jams?

Phan21 Permalink
Phan21 Have an hour long study hall with computers. And I have been craving a good Fishman led jam.

MrMinersBrother an example that comes to mind is the Reba from Darien '00 (vol 3) it gets real quiet then fishman ups the tempo causing trey jump into a soaring blissful ending to the jam.

also runaway jim from NYE '95 is another one where the drums are siiick

I have always been a proponent of this Reba and helped persuade .Net to put it on the jam chart. It is the epitome of mournful, worn-out, but beautifully creative jams of 2000.

spaced I'm not sure I'd say he's "leading" it all the way through, but Fish pwns the Oswego Piper.

Oswego owned me. I was hotter than the band.

he basically leads The Wedge.

Abe_Froman Permalink
Abe_Froman The Tweezer from 12/16/99, Raleigh, NC. The band is doing a lot of cool stuff, but not necessarily going anywhere, then Fish does a drum fill, and like that, THE HOSE is on full blast.

Call me crazy because it's not on the setlist but according to the CD booklet I think Trey plays drums at least for part of it

Yes, Trey is on his drum kit for part of that Jim. Still, it doesn't mean that Fishman isn't leading the jam. NYE 95 is the Johnny B Fishman show. It's really pretty remarkable to listen to

Roofless_Sheds Permalink
Roofless_Sheds my favorite Fish-led stuff comes from '99-00, the 'phish-tronica' period. check out:

- 35min Fluffhead jam from Alpine '99
- ALL of the official Fuji Rock '99 release, specifically the Limb By Limb and 2001 > Bowie
- Gumbo > Llama from Fukuoka, 6/14/00
- 35min Runaway Jim from 7/3/00 (FTA SBD)
Score: 3

phuckyourphace Permalink
phuckyourphace fishman kills it in the headphones jam.
Score: 1

kipmat Permalink
kipmat Ooh, can't believe I forgot 12/31/99 Roses Are Free. The last 10-15 minutes or so is Fishman basically carrying the band with rhythm. Which makes sense, they had been playing for 7 hours at that point.

turquOiseMountain Permalink
turquOiseMountain Does the Night 2 Island Tour "Piper" jam count. . .? I've been listening to that a lot. It's so quiet and hypnotic in the jam at first, with near primitive interplay, then methodically intensifies into an all out HOSE. Fish. . .oh, Fish. . .
Score: 0

GhostlikeSwayze Permalink
GhostlikeSwayze the hour long Runaway Jim is based upon several distinct sections largely differentiated and decided by Fish's drum groove changing. It's hard to say though, because as a drummer I naturally hyper-analyze what Fish is doing and I also think the best Phish jams are all a product of the group functioning as one.

Kurtzboy Permalink
Kurtzboy The Mike's Groove from Live Bait 4 springs to my mind. I'm blanking on the date, but it's awesome Fishman.
Score: 0

Thunder Permalink
Thunder Vegas 11/13/97 .... check out the Weekapaug. Fishman just dances on the ride. So much so that Trey starts getting off and then they launch into hyperdrive. Very fun listen.

johnnyd Phish.net Staff Permalink
johnnyd Dunno about "lead" but the Jim from SBIX, when they are announcing the winners of the race - I really like that, its like a tribal style rolling along. I think the Tahoe Light (8.9.2011) has a similar feel.
Score: 0

bs915 Permalink
bs915 Not sure if I'd say he's "leading the band," but Fish's work during just about every version of Limb by Limb blows my mind.
Score: 0

RoverPhish Permalink
Headphones Jam for sure, and maybe 12/2/95 Tweezer. Just seems like Trey and Fish push each other to jam harder
Score: 0

Thunder Permalink
Thunder I'd also suggest the week Karl Perrazo sat in during fall tour 96. That 11/2 Crosselope is Fishman paradise!
