"The Fans"
It’s unlikely that the crowds at either show will overlap much. Both bands built followings mostly on college campuses but attracted different students.
Generally speaking, the ones who did relatively well, scored good internships and graduated on time more than likely became Dave devotees. And those who spent the bulk of their college years “finding themselves” via a bong and hilariously disjointed conversations probably flowed with Phish.
but if we're making general statements (which the journalist is clearly doing), then i would tend to agree that the beer drinking, boobie chasing DMB college frat boys probably have done a little better for themselves than than the "higher state of consciousness" seeking collegiate phish fan....if for no other reason than they probably took school a little more seriously when they were there
With the summer months in full swing you'll likely want to bite down into a juicy fruit to cool off from the heat. Oranges are a juicier option, with an inedible outer layer that must be peeled off. Whether its named after the color or vice-versa is still open to debate. If you're looking for a bite without the hassle of peeling the apple is your best bet. While lighter on refreshing juices, apples come in a wide variety of flavors grown all around the world.
I'm a partner in a law firm, have seen 80 phish shows and can't stand dmb.

i know i've posted this pic plenty of times before, but it's my way of saying stfu with the dmb v phish nonsense. not directed at OP, just in general to all those 'journalists' who feel they need to write about this subject
Read this in a local publication. "The Fans" Its unlikely that the crowds at either show will overlap much. Both bands built followings mostly on college campuses but attracted different students. Generally speaking, the ones who did relatively well, scored good internships and graduated on time more than likely became Dave devotees. And those who spent the bulk of their college years finding themselves via a bong and hilariously disjointed conversations probably flowed with Phish. These two bands dont belong in the same conversation.
But the phrase "hilariously disjointed conversations" is the perfect description for what has been occurring around here all week.
Is it a pile on mentality or legitimate hatred?
Why?For most it's the first choice. While most DMB threads turn towards hate there have been a few where the first 3-4 replies are pro DMB. It is funny to see how different those threads turn out. All of a sudden people aren't as afraid to say they like them. Of course people will deny it. If I cared enough and had the time I would dig up the threads for examples. Believe me it's true
Is it a pile on mentality or legitimate hatred?
I like some of the music, but overall can take it or leave it. If I could easily and conveniently go see a show, I'd probably check it out.
My wife on the other hand despises the band. Nails on a chalkboard. I can assure you she's not piling on with anyone, she just really cant stand the songs, the music, the voice.
Another friend dislikes him based on personal experience. I forget the whole story, but about 15 years ago when she was a teenager she had an opportunity to meet him, and he was a total dick to her. She liked his music up to that point, but was basically like "f- this guy" after that.
But its pretty obvious from looking at forums at least that there is a lot of pile on mentality too.
Sorry guys, I got a B on my accounting final so now I'm a huge Aerosmith fan. I'll be leaving this forum for Aerosmith.net now...It's been good
i used to love dmb and still have a tremendous amount of respect for them. i saw dmb 22 times before seeing phish once. i've seen phish 13 times since, and still counting. i will never see dmb the same way and i don't mean this in a bad way.
Phish gets me to that place now. simple as that..

Not sure if it's been linked before, but it would be nice to see some more comments headed in the correct direction. someone post this on PT maybe, if its not there already? I cant check.. made a rule not to go there at work.
the fact that anyone posts anything about dmb on a phish fan site is stupidI have to disagree with this.
would it be stupid have a post about this YEM?
The only thing this does is cause people to be labeled as something they're not and perpetuate the alienation.
I never liked DMB too much, but my wife gave me some more detailed underground info on the band, and had me listen to several live shows...I must say that although I do not love all his music, there is no denying he is very talented.
Why is it okay for a journalist to publish a story that overtly stereotypes a group of people?first amendment'd
@chris200w said:Tell that to victims of racism, homophobia, etc. Not suggesting the Phish stereotypes are anywhere near that level, but they're still negative stereotypes that hurt people when they're perpetuated. Why is it okay for a journalist to publish a story that overtly stereotypes a group of people?first amendment'd

I'm offended that you would even make the comparison. You are not hurt by these stereotypes. Stop the feigned outrage.
I'm not outraged, and not pretending to be. If there were a way to apply tone to a forum post, my previous comments would have an inquisitive, curious tone, not an outraged tone. I sort of suspected someone would read too far into my comment and infer that I'm some pitchfork wielding wacko out for the blood of anyone who doesn't like Phish. That's not the case at all. Most of the negative things people say about Phish I take in stride and just ignore.
Negative stereotypes are harmful, though, no matter how insignificant the harm seems. I'm sure you'd agree that Phish fans who get drug tested whenever they come back from a vacation are being harmed by the stereotype, right? This clearly isn't anywhere near as bad as racism and homophobia, but it's a disservice to the upstanding fans who don't want to be associated with the negative stereotypes.
This type of thing doesn't hurt me enough to start some movement aimed at eliminating Phish stereotyping, and I'm not. I'm just posting some thoughts on a message board.

Hello there,
Thanks for writing an article on my favorite band. I've been following Phish for almost a decade now and it's always nice when they visit Hampton Roads and save me from driving 500 miles (although I do that anyway) to get to a show. I am just curious about something though, have you seen Phish? If you haven't I would like to extend to you the invitation to come out either Tuesday or Wednesday and check them out. Your article portrayed the average fan or phan as a bohemian-like stoner with no real direction. I am curious to where you picked up that stereotype? Have you explored the scene yourself and came away with that conclusion or are you just basing this off your knowledge of the American counter-culture and the "hippie" movement? It also seems to portray the band as unsuccessful and only attracted to the state because the Hampton coliseum happens to look like a spaceship. Are you aware that both their management company, merchandise warehouse, and ticket company are all based in Virginia? Ever head of the Mockingbird Foundation? It's a non-profit group run by Phish fans with the goal of sustaining music education in school. Phish also runs a charity known as the Waterwheel foundation which most recently raised a considerable amount of cash to help support victims of the Vermont flooding last August.
Yes, many Phish fans are burnouts and a drain on the greater society. However, I would argue that just as many are extremely family oriented, professional, taxpaying citizens. In fact, outside of a pension for improvisational rock music, they are pretty normal folk. It just seemed to me that the tone of your article was very pro-DMB and semi anti-Phish. I'm sure you checked with the city of Portsmouth before hand and realized how much money is generated due to the Phish concert. It's an economic win for the city and the area at large. With the two night run this year and this upcoming weekends shows just a few hundred miles away in Atlantic city, it is likely that many fans will also venture to Hampton Roads on Monday. This means the area will experience a three day influx in tourists and the money they bring. I hope you come out this upcoming week and check out at least one of the shows. I'm sure you will love it! Thanks again for the press, even if it wasn't the best :-)
Have a wonderful day,
Greg
Still trying to find myself I guess. 3 credits shy of my Bachelors. I'm waiting until phish 3.0 is finished to hop on dave tour and finish my degree.
I sent him another email. Nice, but just reminding him of the article that will haunt his online blogging career. He sounds so judgmental, so ignorant and so assumptive. It's a radioactive article that was not seen by an editor, it serves no purpose but to divide and chastise. It shouldn't have been published based on the lack of research and knowledge of content.

And here's some Rainbows because I don't know how to really jam.
Blagh.... I hear that fiddle or that sax and I'm hitting the bottle, HARD.
I'm not a big Dave fan, but I always find it interesting how so many people here despise him. Why? Is it a pile on mentality or legitimate hatred?Same reason peeps hate on Bisco! Its cool!
You actually give a toot about what uninformed writers say about you/us. Start giving less of a toot

I hate Dave's voice and I can't really vibe with the Biscuits...
but music is subjective, as well as musical taste.
