hate away, i promise i'm not trolling.
am i the only one that isn't excited at all by Furthur? I love the GD don't get me wrong, but Furthur shows just feel kind of sad and nostalgic...I didn't get a Jerry, but I got a Phil.

"what do you want me to do, cut it off?"
Just like Phish... Their shows may be different than in 1997 etc., but the Boys still get it and get it good... They are a talented bunch and it is fun to watch or listen to any musician that gets it on like that!
Watch the 6-24-12 Antelope and tell me it ain't fun to witness!
Saw Dark Star Orchestra a couple times before John left (about 6 or 7 years ago), I thought they were way better than Furthur when I saw 'em..
There were moments on last tour where something was wrong with Bobby. Probably just old and drunk (supposedly he was dosed at the Greek LA show). But he sings really well still (when he isnt doing the speak-sing thing). And as long as they bury his guitar in the mix a little, Furthur is hard to beat.
i hated the only 'the other one's' show i was at.
however i did start seeing DSO with JK, and really liked it.
i was totally on the fence about seeing Furthur.
finally caught them in Manchester, NH last year.
and it seriously kicked ass!
Phil bombs during Jack Straw and Bertha were bunker busters.
and JK rips.
go see 'em they rock.
Saw two shows last year. Had a blast. Will be at Bethel the 15th.
What @lefty just said is true. Furthur isn't what I saw in the end of the 80s but it's as satisfying as many 94,95 shows. The main thing missing besides Jerry is the absurd energy level and intensity of the crowd. Phish "brings it" as people like to say lately, but the GD brought in crazy numbers, like back to back RFK sellouts. A summer tour with twice or three times the numbers . Gigantic venues. Basically two week runs at MSG. It's a scale thing and the energy ratcheted up accordingly.Spot on point @Wasteoftime. Furthur can sell out BGCC and the energy is good, but that's only 5000-6000 people. Thurs night of the recent NYE run, there were only a few thousand people there (nice because it wasnt a madhouse, but bad because it wasnt a madhouse). The Grateful Dead were a full on all-cyclinders-firing fireworks f***ing party. Shakedown was nuts, people were going nuts, it was a freakshow, a love fest, a museum, a living/changing/growing cultural extravaganza. Big difference. Oh, and the whole Jerry thing. Agreed, energy at a huge huge scale.
But Furthur's music is damn good.
Apologize in advance for the all caps but the comments in this thread call for it:
PRE-SALE FOR FURTHUR'S WINTER TOUR IS JULY 14TH. THIS IS 100% NOT THEIR LAST TOUR

Also, I will be raging the field for both Brooklyn shows July 13th and 14th.
I also wish Phil/Bobby would let John sing most Jerry tunes. John's just simply awesome with that guitar and with the tender vocals. DSO veteran/fanatic here, and while I enjoy every Furthur show I go to, seeing DSO was, in general, a better musical experience almost every time.
PL&F was good, PLQ was great and RD was great, dead and too was soso, furthur is meh, especially after jay ditched them
@BigPimpinNYC said:Yeah, where?PRE-SALE FOR FURTHUR'S WINTER TOUR IS JULY 14TH.Where'd you hear this?
I didn't see anyone say anything about how ol' Bobby Weir (geez that feels weird saying OLD Bobby Weir) kinda raps some lyrics nowadays in Furthur. Big Bobby fan am I, but I can't stand that.Yeah I also wish they would let JK sing most of the Jerry songs

Damn I'm embarassed, I have it in my calendar but I can't find it online. Weird.
I might be in the minority. I like JK's playing, but not so much his singing.

As far as energy goes, the Allstate show in Nov was packed and rocking. Auditorium Theater was also packed wih energy but small. UIC was average. Madison in Nov on the other hand was only half full but really fun and that Viola...oh my
Music has always been great and the vibe is laid back...definitely older but cool although PT stories are f***ed up
I'm hoping Johnny K. gives him a nice 2nd set ballad or a No More Do I.
i love the fact that they change up song structures and order. for example, hell in a bucket used as a set closer as opposed to the dead using it as a set opener. or doing i know you rider without any sign of china cat, fire on the mountain without scarlet and vice versa. i think it's awesome. you can't go in expecting to see the grateful dead, which is what i think most of the naysayers think it's all about
