How often are old setlists uncovered?

cMags13 Permalink
I mean there are a ton of shows from 85-89 that dont have known setlists, how often do new setlists get found and what are some of the newer shows that have been found?

spaced My impression is: not very often. At this point, we know most of what we're going to know about those shows, since that was in the era before the band systematically recorded their shows, and before they were big enough that fans recorded most shows.

If the online Phish community and/or Shapiro (who gets paid to figure that stuff out, after all) haven't discovered the setlist by now, it's unlikely that anyone has a recording or written setlist that's still waiting to be found.

That said, occasionally new recordings pop up, or people do some detective work and figure out that a tape labelled with one date actually came from a different show (see here for example), but it doesn't happen that often.

highhat ^^ props to your Spaceman Spiff ^^

You know, the band I'm sure has this stuff in archives or in "Mike's journal".

Look at the list of shows not in circulation from the most recent Surrender (pg.49); 300+ shows!!!

I'll say more than half of 'em (if not ALL of them) are in the vault.

pzerbo Less often every year, for sure. In the late 90s when Mockingbird started assembling the first Phish Companion we'd get hit with "new to us" stuff all the time, as one would expect. When Kevin Shapiro posted Phish's own setlist records through '93 back a year or two ago there were a dozen or so that we didn't have or only had portions.

Other than that, since publication of the Companion's second edition in 2004 we've probably averaged maybe one or two new shows and/or setlists per year? When something supposedly "new" appears we'll work with Kevin to help determine it's authenticity, date, etc, most of which result in "no, that is a mislabeled combo of xx and yy" etc, but sometimes results in new data. When it is "new" we post it in the forum, twitter, etc. @icculus or @Bizarro_Jerry might know more off the top of their heads, but AFAIK we don't maintain a list of what is "new to us since x" as we have enough things to juggle as it is. :-)

On the other hand, we're constantly fixing setlists, adding teases, transitions, show and song notes etc. The setlist data is very much a work in progress, and always will be.

Babyrattlesnakes There's always hope. There was a GD show from '70 that was just discovered this year. I haven't listened to it yet, but word on the street is that it's of acceptable sound quality. It was sitting in some dude's house all this time.
