Next Fest in VT?

Jimmymac03 Permalink
Jimmymac03 Please join me in starting a rumor that the next festival will be in Vermont. It makes sense to me. 30 year anniversary festival back where it all started. I say somewhere near Burlington. There is plenty of open space in that part of the world.

This could also be some closure for the Coventry debacle.

johnnyd I would love for this to be true, but I can't think of anywhere up here that matches the infrastructure of WG or Indio in terms of getting people in and out in a reasonable way.

Which is why I'm calling for a summer-long* residency in VT - touring the Champlain Fairgrounds, (Whatever Ski Mountains) have a summer stage going (hopefully the 'bush), Higher Ground, maybe Nectars...all the good spots.

This model will diffuse traffic and make the whole thing logistically possible. People can come for a week or so at a time and the crowd would rotate throughout the summer.

Get ready to pilgrimmage (-ize? -ate?), beyotches.

* I would not object if "summer-long" extended into the fall

Jimmymac03 @johnnyd I like what you're preaching bruh. Maybe outdoor stage on Church street or a few nights Burlington waterfront?

Base of any ski area could handle shows. Roads in and parking are already very well established... Trey, Fish, Mike, Page I hope you read this thread :)

johnnyd Were you at Sugarbush in '95? Mess getting in and out.

They can handle a day's worth of ski traffic at a time. Couple thousand cars tops. But not 30,000+ festival traffic.

But yeah, if there were dozens of shows and the crowd was diluted...then I think we'd be on to something.

:::patiently awaits fat signing bonus from RLM/Phish Inc.:::

leave the festivals to grounds where they can handle large crowds and camping (ie watkins glen)

Perhaps some surprise shows in and around Burlington?

I think this is due more to excessive rain and the ground being so saturated it not being able to handle the influx of people. Although I was not physically there I don't know for sure but seems to make sense

benevolution Permalink
benevolution I really don't think Phish will have a fest in VT. For something as big as a festival, ticket sales really matter to them, and even placing SBIX virtually in the center of their northeastern "phan zone" in upstate NY didn't result in the ticket sales they were looking for. Having it way up in VT would mean an even smaller turnout. I'm pretty sure the only reason they played in VT at all since 2009 was because of the flood relief show, it wasn't even part of their original tour. If you look at this map which will give you an idea of where their focus has been the last couple of years, it will most likely be at Watkins again or very close to that region, if I had to bet on it I would bet it would be somewhere in NY state again. Maybe even PA, so they can draw in more of the midwestern crowd. But it really seems like they've been staying out of the northern reaches from whence they came, since their return to glory. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows...

edit: and don't get me wrong - I f***ing LOVE going to VT and will use any excuse to go, Phish included. Just trying to look at this thing logically.

Of course there is.

Festival 10 seems most likely at the Glen, but in time they will have another festival in VT, and I hope Maine as well.

WasteOfTime Permalink
WasteOfTime Vermont can't absorb a rush like that anymore. The infrastructure isn't designed for it. Bad press for Phish in Vermont would be extra embarrassing. The state population peaked with the Grateful Dead at Highgate and that was a huge failure..and then...C...a fest in NY state and stealth after party day in VT would be perfect though.
