Anyone have any links that give insight on the business side of these things?
I don't get excitement of going to a big fest where I want to see 6 of the 30 bands playing and guess what they play on 3 different stages at the same time. why spend my money. I think more people have figured this out.
To be honest I really don't enjoy the "BIG" festivals. its the small ones that count. I'm talking 1,000 and under not 30,000+

Yep, and that's why Phish fests are the best.

EQUIFUNK has gotten some minor exposure on this site, mostly because they hosted camping and lodging plus entertainment for the Bethel Woods run last year.. ( and it was a great success, haven't seen one negative comment or complaint.. Even on PT!!!)
However, the main Equifunk festival is always in August.. Great lineup this year and they are pulling out all the stops for their 5th anniversary this time around.. Festival has been growing steadily but it will always be capped at 1000 attendees.. Oh, and it's all inclusive which makes for a headache free, easily budgeted weekend away..
Check it out... Any .netters gonna be in attendance??

Its probally the insurance costs killing good festies like we had in the late 90's early 2000's! they have to bring in more security and pay a higher premium with causes them to reach out to more mainstream bands for more attendence which causes folks not in the scene or the know to show up and screw it up for the rest of us cuz they dont know how to handle themselves and that drives up the insurance premuims with causes ...........Insurance is relatively cheap. A couple million dollar policy isn't much.
please god yes let these festivals die!!
festivals were on their way out when bonnaroo started in 2002

please god yes let these festivals die!!Really you think so. There are many festivals out there that say differently yes they are not easy to find but I have been to many that are not so commercially popular as Bonaroo, Coachella, Let's see what else um even all good, Wakarusa, Whats the one in Gulf shores... Do I need name more. that are so commercially popular.. Have you been to the Spring Fling, Shakori (not to bad yet) Strawberry Mountain, Trinity Tribal Stomp, Bobolink???? really to say they were out when bonaroo started is not a true staement. Also mentioning Mantra Bash, Angel Jam Josh brother we love and miss you please come home.

I kinda can't believe no one addressing the ridiculous idea that music festivals are a "fad"Festivals have been going on for years the are not a fad. Seems as though people don't realize thaty there are incredible festivals out there that are great excluding the highly popular yuppie fests such as mentioned above by me. Coachella, Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, All Good, Gulf Shores(whatever the name may be) etc..... They really are not a fad I prefer smaller festivals over the bigger commercialized ones happening today. Trust me on this i hae seen a numerous amount and I think Spring Fling takes the cake other than Angel Jam and Mantra Bash these days. Maybe Equifunk There are so many out there that are great and they still rage. Wish caly had some great ones. Unlike High Sierra yeah its fun but gotten so big
Shitty festivals are going away, the good ones are being shut down by land deals costing too much, local commerce chambers denying permits. Now we have to live with Electric Forrest. End
Wanee was possibly the best weekend of my life and I don't want to be told,"guess what? It's never going to happen again". Besides, if the festival fad stops, all of the small festivals are going to become WAY over-crowded by people who have nowhere else to go.
festivals will never end, especially the big boys. they are getting bigger and better each year.
festivals WILL end when Ringo Starr headlines Bonnaroo in 2016.

Festivals will have issues if local, state or federal gov't ever step in with oversight. i pray this doesnt happen on the federal level, although on the state level, the ones who have to hand out mass gathering permits, they have more jurisdiction and i think it will stay like that for quite some time.
Let us not forget woodstock was a festival...And for every Jimi Hendrix, there was a Sha Na Na.
and plan to go to Bear Creek to see New Mastersounds [my friend says they're great]They are AWESOME!!! I love these guys. One of my top 5 bands to see these days. I hope you enjoy it.
I hope festivals stick around. I love them. Big ones. Small ones. Phish ones, especially.

Wondering if this festival fad will end soon.I'm no anthropologist, but I'm pretty sure thousands of people would get together to eat, drink, otherwise intoxicate themselves, enjoy music, other forms of art and recreation since, well, just about time immemorial, in probably just about every civilization that ever existed.
I don't see that losing its appeal anytime soon.

I don't wanna see festivals end, it's a great way to open yourself up to new music...or not. At Wanee, I had a great time and enjoyed EVERY band I saw. I saw so many great bands (Hot Tuna, Conspirator, Particle, Dumpstaphunk, etc) and plan to go to Bear Creek to see more (Umph's, New Mastersounds [my friend says they're great], Dumpstaphunk, etc).Wanee is the absolute shit. A lot of different sounds brought together, but somehow it all works. There are literally no bands there I don't want to see. I will go back every year for as long as they let me, and I'm pretty sure anyone who has been feels the same way.

The big expensive ones that don't draw people in, won't last. But, there will always be something. Look at the Newport Folk Festival. Been going strong since 1985 (or 1959-1970, and resuming in '85. Whichever you prefer) The good ones will last.Love, Love, Love the folk festival. Hop in a kayak and watch it from the bay! you wont regret it.
Hells yes Summercamp. Amazing festival. Flew there from San Francisco this year just because its my favorite around.

everyone on here should check out CATSKILL CHILL music fest! it's only 2 weeks away but is my favorite small festi I've been too! this will be chill fest's 3rd year as well as my 3rd year attending and I recommend it to everyone here! great lineup, people and vibes! the fest ground is a summer camp so you can camp or book a bunk house for cheap! plus the fest is only $125 now which is an awesome price for 3 days/nights of great music !!

I hear where you're coming from but I love the feeling knowing everybody is there for one band and one band only. Makes for a much better sense of community.

festivals started dying in 07. in 06 there were almost 300 large multiband festivals with nationally known lineups. anyone remember those early 2000's relix festival guides? everything slowed down when the housing bubble broke. it has nothing to do with music or bands or love of music. purely economics. promoters no longer are willing to take that kind of a hit unless it is a sure thing. most festivals are not sure things.
folk music festival is one of my favourite festival

I cant ever see anyone getting tired of attending a festival there. I'll definitely be hitting it again this april. Hopefully phish will play another festival as well, superball was the bees knees.
