Yeah, that's my home and family down there. Well, north Jersey but they got hit just as hard. Gas rationing, food shortage, water shortage, no power. I'm away at school right now, but I'm so worried about them all. Luckily my house didn't flood, but there was a lot of damage from the wind. Hopefully things will start to look up soon for everybody.
I grew up in Ocean Twp, NJ, which is in Monmouth County, just inland from Asbury Park. My brother still lives there, and has described the shore as destroyed. I received a few pics from the beach club where I've been swimming for the last 30 years or so. They still have no power down there, and gas is being rationed ala 1979 during the energy crisis, with alternate days for odd or even license plates. It's pretty grim. Places like Sea Bright, Belmar, Point Pleasant, and of course Seaside Heights, have essentially been removed from the map. I'm sure there will be discussions going forward of whether to rebuild some of these communities. People are really hurting at the shore. Much media attention, deservedly so, is on the destruction of lower Manhattan and Staten Island, Rockaways, and Long Beach, but I agree with OP that some of the worst effects are being felt on the Jersey Shore. Towns like Manasquan aren't even letting residents in to assess the damage due to ruptured gas main lines, and fears of explosions. It's the closest our region has ever come to a Katrina-like level of destruction, the sum magnitude of which may not be felt for weeks or months. Let us all hope this N'oreaster brewing does not make a bad situation worse early next week. Hang in there op. It's gonna be a long haul, but resilliency seems to be part of the fabric of the Jersey spirit.

Bacon Field. haha .netting it
I grew up in Rumson/Sea Bright...left when I was about 20 but Jersey will always be home. It's hard being so far away at this time. I want to be up there helping. I hear awful stories about looting and people stealing gas from cars in driveways. People cold and nowhere to go. Breaks my heart. At the same time it really warms my heart to hear how people have come together through this to help the hardest hit communities. I've donated to Red Cross and will give blood but it's frustrating not being able to do more. ;
I lived in Sea Bright for about 5 years. It was always one of my favorite places in NJ.
I love the Jersey Shore more than most - and I would love it all to become a national park. That being said they will rebuild - they will make more mcmansions - and they too will float away someday.
Stay Strong!
Whoa is the the Monmouth Beach Swim Club?Ya, Pavilion or aka Little Monmouth.

I hear awful stories about...people stealing gas from cars in drivewaysyup. my friend's fiancee is from NJ and was there at the time the storm hit. she woke up one morning to a note on her car that said "i had to syphon gas out of your car @ 3am. gas stations were closed. sorry for the inconvenience, here's some cash...thanks, random stranger" and a $10 bill was under the note. craziness.

I also grew up in Ocean County, but am out in the Princeton area now. The downed trees & power lines out by me were annoying & it made driving really unsafe - but when I visited my parents' house, it looked like a war zone. The police were checking ID's to make sure you lived in the community before letting you in, because looters had begun ransacking the already devastated homes both by land & by boat. I refused to take pictures, because I didn't think anybody should have to see how ugly things got in my community.
And for the record - my family (and 95% of the families in their community) is not a bunch of rich snobs. My family has worked hard to keep our family business alive since 1880. The house my parents live in (via generator) was built in 1982 by my grandparents after our warehouse burnt down in Hoboken & relocated to scenic Lakewood NJ out of necessity. Nobody is getting rich off these donations - they're just trying to survive now.
If you've got an extra $10 - txt "REDCROSS" to 90999. Instead of your phone bill being $130, it'll be $140 this month. Big deal. The shore community could really use your help.

(((vibes to Jersey shore)))
i grew up in toms river, NJ and my sister's family and my parents still live there. i also have a house just outside of long beach island. luckily my sisters family, my parents, and my house only had to deal with long days of power outages. I work in the fence industry and belong to an industry trade group. this group will be contributing significant funds to the red cross in the short term and we will be looking to help a more localized charity as the state and specifically the shore rebuilds.
my wife has started a donation collection through here bucks county mommies group. the overwhelming response and giving has been great. my house in pa is completely filled with baby items. we are renting a truck this weekend and bringing to my home town of toms river to help two specific families that lost everything as well as drop items to the shelters.
It is crazy to see the photos of the shore destroyed and while it will never be the same, it will rebuild and continue to give people good memories.
