Tryin' catch me riding dirty....

WGphan92 Permalink
WGphan92 Alright so here's the story:
Me and my friends/band played a gig last night at a private harvest party. There were literally salad bowls full of pot, just up for grabs, so we ended up taking like 5 grams or so. Earlier today we were driving back to our college town, through some random small town in upstate NY. My car is covered in phish/dead/moe/etc. bumper stickers, and my friends and I just look like typical college potheads. There was a state trooper behind us at a red light, and I'm under the belief that I was profiled, and they ran my plates.
My inspection is expired, so they pulled me over. After the typical bullshit, "license, registration. Do you know why we stopped you?" The cop mentioned an odor of pot.
We stayed calm, said we didnt have anything, and politely declined consent to search, assuring the officer that we respect his position in law enforcement, but chose to express our rights.
To be honest we had a few bowls in the car, one of them packed, and like at least a half ounce of dank. We were pretty damn nervous..... After a few minutes of light conversation, and insisting that we weren't hiding anything, the cop seamed to believe us, for whatever reason, I'm not sure. He was even saying how he's trained to detect lies and nervousness and has been doing it for 15 years. So I guess we're pretty good actors. Hahahahah
I received a ticket for the expired inspection, and as the cop told us to leave, the last thing he said was "I know there's at least a pipe in there, so settle that amongst yourselves." Then he left.
Now, I'm convinced he actually didn't smell anything, and that's why he never actually searched us. I think we were totally profiled as hippy potheads. (We totally are tho). But damn, "to serve and protect" is a bunch of bullshit. More like seek and destroy.

Exactly. The cop was actually really chill. He didn't abuse his power. He didn't try to intimidate us. And he gave us a chance to explain ourselves, and actually listened and valued what we had to say... Kinda gave me a little faith that the system isn't totally screwed. Ok I take it back, maybe I wasn't profiled.. He was just doing his job, and I was breaking the law. Lol

Exactly. You were breaking the law, then lied to a cop. You probably shouldn't make this thread about what's fair or your rights because it seems hypocritical.

Now I'm going to put some water in my little bong and enjoy more football. f***ing hippies.

Yes yes I know. Hypocritical. I was totally I in the wrong and just got lucky. Definitely an eye opener, as I don't plan on driving around with bud anymore. I wasn't thinking. I had to drive. There wasn't another option. I'm young and stupid. No other excuses for it.
Getting my shit inspected this week hopefully.

WGphan92 And I only lied to give myself the benefit of the doubt. If he was gonna search, he would've, whether I gave consent or not, because he did have probable cause. If I admitted to having a pipe, that would have opened the door for them to tear my car apart and find whatever else we had. My best friend and band mate would've been arrested for sure, then subsequently would've been thrown out of school. I did everything in my power to not let that happen, given the circumstances of the situation. And it all happened so fast, there was no way to prepare ourselves for it. Overall, we handled it the best we could.
It all works out. I'm just a little freaked out

If that cop wasn't one if the good ones then I don't know who is.

OP, seek and destroy?? Give me a f***ing break.

WGphan92 I wrote this thread right after it happened so i was still all hyped up and may have come off as pissed at the cops. I've been assessing the situation all night and I realize that I'm actually glad that they were cool with the situation. We respected their authority, politely, (although lying), and they respected us enough to let us slide.
Major lesson learned today. Time to grow up a little bit and quit being such a dingus.

No expired inspection/emission/registration stickers, no warrants for whoever the car is registered to, no lights out at all, wear your seatbelt, use your turn signals, don't go more than 5 over, get the stickers off of your ride, put it in a mason jar (odor blocker) and use visine.

Don't let some overlooking of a letter with a sticker in it get you busted.

They searched, found the empties and the pot. Asked who's the pot was. Then threw our empty beers into the woods, and confiscated the ones still in the cooler. Then let us go saying, "It would be un-American of you boys to not drink before and Allman Bros show." No joke.

We got tickets for underage alcohol possession. Weed was still in the car.

I've actually been stopped a number of times all around upstate/western NY and have never had any trouble other than minor traffic violations, in not, just warnings. Cops here a pretty cool I guess for the most part. state Troopers especially. Town cops and county sherrifs are another story tho
