As you might be able to tell, I've avoided 78-95 like the PLAGUE for the most part (due mostly to a lack of 20 minute explorative spacey jams [I love '76 and '77, also from what I've heard of '89]). But after I discovered Phish, I got somewhat tired of some of the Dead's dissonant spacey jams (I love the 02/14/1970 Dark Star, but the 5 minutes of dissonant space kill me). I can dig some spacey jamming, but the straight-up avant-garde, dissonance for 20 minutes can get on my nerves a bit.
Bottom line: I know about Workingman's Wednesday; but I was looking for some of your guys' suggestions (great shows with dissonant jamming or not, just anything you guys like/think is must-hear) and to just open up a nice little niche for Grateful Dead speak on this forum (talk any Dead in here).
Also, unrelated, but anybody else here love "If I Had the World to Give"? I first heard the October '78 Winterland one and really dug it!

Dick's picks 33 is so damn good. WOW. Help on the way...WOW...
5/8/77 is NOT overrated. I'm sure some would argue the best show by any band, ever. It's great, no doubt.
I love 7/18/90
Been digging on 4/24/78 from Illinois State. If you can stand bob's guitar sound here (i like, but it is a little overkill), this is a great show. A wonderful big river (w stayin alive teases), scarlet, and fire. damn.
the alaska run from 80 is really good. alpine 89 rocks.
Good Luck

Dick's Picks 13 - 5/6/81, Nassau - is high energy from the start and is one of the shows where the first set can hang with the second set.
Is anyone disappointed with the Dave's Picks 4 recent release?
RE: Dave's Pick
No. 3 is a bit subpar also.
But the first two were awesssssoooommmeee.......
Is anyone disappointed with the Dave's Picks 4 recent release?The reason this was released was because the SBD didnt previously circulate.
Although I support Lemiuex releasing SBDs of shows that don't circulate, and I love '76 and many don't, the 06/09/76 release (Road Trips maybe) is a far superior recording and performance. Deep rich bass, great mix. This release is a bit thin and doesnt really stand out from any other '76.
op: Check out all four performances from 1975. Spectacular. Also concentrate on April of 1978, particularly 4.12, 4.19, 4.16, hell all of April. Also Fall of 1979, 10.27, 10.31, 11.1, 12.1, and ESPECIALLY 11.04 He's Gone> Jam. Otherworldly.
Others on here are bigger 80s/90s honks than I am.
I second 1.22.78
Also, Dick's Picks 18 is a must have, and is what made me fall in love with the Dead. It was recorded over 2 days in February 78. Jerry's guitar screams throughout, and really the whole show sounds like they were playing in 74, except with a 78 setlist. The Scarlet-Fire is what the 5/8/77 and Closing of Winterland Scarlet-Fires dream of being when they grow up.Note the Scarlet> Fire from 2/5/78. Probably my favorite version. See 5/08/77 and the 10/14/83 versions for my top three. HMmm those 10/27/79 10/31/79 versions are pretty sick also. Those 78 versions are so bouncy, and those... oh nevermind....

Is anyone disappointed with the Dave's Picks 4 recent release?it was a nice surprise when I went to the mailbox last Friday. Listened all the way through and thought....it's ok. No major jam sessions as I don't recall any song in significant double digits.

The final Stephen, and a sick show overall. The "space" is actually a jam building on the drumz with Airto, segue into a Saint o' Cir-like jam, and then some grooves into Stephen. Spooky good.
Of course, there's the "From Egypt with Love" October '78 Winterland shows; Summer '89 through Summer '90; the Greek '84; many of the Alpines; there's a lot of yummy stuff from that era.
March through May '81 is my favorite underrated era.Agreed. Check 03/09/81 MSG. An absolute must hear. One of the best all-time shows. Crackling with energy, especially that second set.
anything with Brent singing gets the "next track" button. I have giving this guy plenty of opportunity but I just can't handle it. With Donna, as long as the group keeps her on a leash, I can dig her. When they let her off the leash, it hurts my ears!
11/29/80 only Shakedown-> Franklin's
2/27/81 beautiful Scarlet-> Fire
7/31/82 The best (almost)birthday show
9/11/83 Help-> Slip-> Frank
5 gems for your listening pleasure
March through May '81 is my favorite underrated era.Absolute truth. I've stayed out of this discussion because anything I say would be redundant. But I'm glad to see several of these great shows are on my archive list.
But in lieu of what was stated above, I'd highly suggest that 5-12-81 New Haven show from the list. Absolutely smokes.
