If You Went Back in Time to See 1 Show...

Dollop_of_Murk Permalink
Dollop_of_Murk At Dick’s, I played a guess-the-setlist game with campground neighbors. Tonight I thought about going back in time and guessing the FYF show on night 1 just to freak everyone out. Which led me to this question:

If you could go back in time – knowing what you know now – which show or run of shows (ie Red Rocks 94, or Went, or Island Tour) would you see, and why?

I think for me, Amsterdam in July ’97. Those two shows are pretty much perfect, musically as well as… cough… geographically.

July 01, 1997

Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Set 1: Ghost[1], Horn, Ya Mar[1], Limb By Limb -> Ain't Love Funny, Saw It Again[1], Dirt, Reba, Dogs Stole Things

Set 2: Jam[2] -> Timber (Jerry) > Bathtub Gin[3] -> Cities -> Jam[4], Loving Cup[5] > Slave to the Traffic Light

Encore: When the Circus Comes

[1] "Worm" banter.
[2] The second set began with a Fishman piano solo that evolved into a jam, as the rest of the band eventually joined the stage and Fishman moved to his drum kit.
[3] Little Drummer Boy tease from Trey.
[4] "Worm" banter. When the Saints Go Marching In and Santa Claus is Coming to Town teases from Trey.
[5] Frankenstein tease from Mike.

Notes: Ghost began the first of two nights of the infamous "Worm" banter, with Fishman saying "I think you know where you are" and Trey responding with "You're on the back of the worm!" The "Worm" was also mentioned in Ya Mar, Saw It Again, and the jam out of Cities, which also included When the Saints Go Marching In and Santa Claus is Coming to Town teases by Trey. Dirt was introduced as "Green Grass High Tides Forever." The second set began with a Fishman piano solo that evolved into a jam, as the rest of the band eventually joined the stage and Fishman moved to his drum kit. Bathtub Gin contained a Little Drummer Boy tease from Trey. Loving Cup contained a Frankenstein tease from Mike.

July 02, 1997

Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Set 1: Mike's Song > Simple -> Maze, Strange Design, Ginseng Sullivan, Vultures, Water in the Sky > Weekapaug Groove

Set 2: Stash -> Llama -> Wormtown Jam[1] -> Wading in the Velvet Sea

Encore: Free

Encore 2: David Bowie

[1] Narration sung to the tune of Swingtown. Trey warned fans about the "killer worms" that inhabit the canals of Amsterdam.

Notes: The Wormtown Jam continued the stage banter of the night before. Portions of the narration were sung to the tune of Steve Miller’s Swingtown, as Trey warned the fans in attendance about the “killer worms” that inhabit the canals of Amsterdam.

Set 3: Brother[5], Also Sprach Zarathustra[5] > Maze[5], Simple[6] -> Swept Away[5] > Steep[5] > Jesus Just Left Chicago[7] > Suzy Greenberg[8]

Encore: Frankenstein[9]

[1] Narration referred to David Byrne, who appeared in the mountain as the face of Icculus, threw Forbin off the mountain and into the arms of the "evil" Famous Mockingbird.
[2] Phish debut; Karl Perazzo on percussion, Dave Grippo on saxophone, and Gary Gazaway on trumpet.
[3] Phish debut; Karl Perazzo on percussion, Dave Grippo on saxophone, and Gary Gazaway on trumpet. Tweezer tease from Trey at the end.
[4] Phish debut; Karl Perazzo on percussion, Dave Grippo on saxophone, Gary Gazaway on trumpet, and Trey on bass.
[5] Karl Perazzo on percussion.
[6] Karl Perazzo on percussion. Mama Told Me Not to Come tease.
[7] Karl Perazzo on percussion, Dave Grippo on saxophone, Gary Gazaway on trumpet.
[8] Karl Perazzo on percussion, Dave Grippo on saxophone, Gary Gazaway on trumpet. Born Under Punches tease from Page.
[9] Dave Grippo on saxophone, Gary Gazaway on trumpet.

Notes: The Mockingbird narration included a reference to The Talking Heads’ David Byrne, who appeared in the mountain as the face of Icculus. As Trey told the story, Byrne threw Colonel Forbin off the mountain and into the arms of the “evil” Famous Mockingbird. The second set "musical costume" was The Talking Heads' Remain in Light. All of the Remain in Light songs were Phish debuts; the set featured Karl Perazzo on percussion, Dave Grippo on saxophone, and Gary Gazaway on trumpet. Perazzo also played during the entire third set. Jesus Just Left Chicago, Suzy Greenberg, and Frankenstein also featured Grippo and Gazaway. At the end of Houses in Motion (which featured Trey teasing Tweezer), an armchair was brought out to the center of the stage and Mike sat in it to sing Seen and Not Seen. While he sang, Karl Perazzo drummed and Trey played bass. After Overload, a bizarre on-stage demonstration closed the set. The third set opened with a Feel Like a Stranger tease. Suzy included a Born Under Punches tease from Page. Simple included a tease of Mama Told Me Not to Come. The soundcheck's Overload was performed with horns and briefly featured Fishman on vacuum. This show was officially released as Live Phish 15.

[4] Marc Daubert.
[5] First known Phish performance; Dude of Life on vocals.
[6] First known performance; Dude of Life on vocals.

Notes: Skippy and Fluffhead featured The Dude of Life on vocals. The jam after Camel Walk may have been Back Porch Boogie Blues. Spanish Flea included an introduction of the band members. Don’t Want You No More was not performed in its entirety, as it lacked the final lyrics. The lengthy percussion jam featured a guest appearance from Marc Daubert. Mike recalls that there were approximately 200 people in the audience. This gig featured the first known version of Slave to the Traffic Light and Fluffhead, the first known Phish versions of Fire, Don't Want You No More, Cities, and Skippy the Wondermouse, and the only known Phish version of Spanish Flea. This performance was on the upstairs level of Nectar's.

harroldHOOD I wasn't able to see phish until 3.0 and I am completely fine with that. I'm happy for those that got to see them before but I don't think that takes anything away from today's shows, their ability to play future shows or even their quality.

But the one show that I would go against all of this for is Cypress. That experience of not knowing they were going to play as long as they did then have them play until the sun comes up. I'd imagine that was pretty cool to say the absolute least.

walstib I would like to go back to my first show and watch it with more recognition. I had only heard a few examples of Phish before this. The show was 10 minutes from my friends apartment in Hartford. I was hanging out and a buddy said lets go check Phish. I didn't even know they were playing. It was something to do. I wasn't familiar with any songs at all (expect covers). Thought it was a good show, was impressed but could only follow so much without knowing the jams. Was pretty wasted to boot. Would like to see a show like this with the knowledge of Phish I have today.

Set 3: David Bowie[7], Bouncing Around the Room, Slave to the Traffic Light > Rift > Sleeping Monkey > Poor Heart, Run Like an Antelope[8]

Encore: Amazing Grace, Costume Contest[9], The Squirming Coil

[1] Wilson tease and quote.
[2] Vibration of Death; War Pigs sung; Theme from Barney & Friends quote from Trey. "The Vibration of Death is gone" replaced the usual "The storm is gone."
[3] Phish debut.
[4] Phish debut; instrumental.
[5] Phish debut. Fishman on vacuum.
[6] Phish debut. He Ent to the Bog was played on a tape in the background. Fishman on vacuum.
[7] Gilligan's Island theme tease from Mike.
[8] Stash tease from Trey in intro.
[9] "Charge!" tease from Page.

Notes: Harpua included the Vibrations of Life and Death. Jimmy decided to put on his favorite album Barney's Greatest Hits, but turned his turntable on the wrong way and started playing it backwards. Fishman then proceeded to sing a verse of War Pigs. Trey subsequently quoted I Love You (a.k.a. the theme to Barney & Friends) before Harpua resumed. Poster was swallowed up into the earth by the Vibration of Death. "The Vibration of Death is gone" replaced the usual "The storm is gone." Prior to the Vibration of Life, Wilson was teased and quoted. A Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon tease (the heartbeats from Speak to Me) was pumped through the P.A. at the beginning of the second set. The second set "musical costume" was The Beatles' The Beatles (also known as The White Album). All of the White Album songs, other than Piggies, were Phish debuts, although Ob La Di, Ob La Da had been jammed or teased on many occasions. Piggies was played for the first time since 11/14/85 (874 shows). HYHU was teased prior to Why Don't We Do It in the Road. Birthday wasn’t sung; Page and Mike noodled a bit while Fishman presented a birthday cake to Brad Sands, who accepted it while wearing a Fishman dress. Cry Baby Cry ended with Fishman on vacuum with Revolution 9 segueing out of the vacuum solo. The background tape playing along with Revolution 9 was Mike’s composition He Ent to the Bog from Phish’s White Tape. The song ended with Fishman stark naked and running around while the band blew bubbles and waved. Good Night was taped from the album and closed the second set. The third set began with a Custard Pie tease, while Bowie contained a Gilligan's Island theme tease from Mike and Antelope's intro contained a Stash tease from Trey. The Costume Contest contained a "Charge!" tease from Page. This show was officially released as Live Phish 13. The soundcheck's Jam was released as an iTunes bonus track called "Glen Falls Soundcheck Jam" and contained a Frankenstein tease from Mike and a May The Force Be With You (The Force Theme from Star Wars) tease from Trey.

[4] Phish debut.

Notes: Driver was dedicated to “Wendy and Lisa,” and Bittersweet Motel was dedicated to the folks at The Dead Goat Saloon (the site of an open mic night appearance by Trey and Mike one night earlier). Driver and Bittersweet Motel featured Trey on acoustic guitar. Moma Dance included Monkey Man (Rolling Stones) teases. The Harpua narration picked up where the December 6, 1996 Harpua ended; Jimmy hitched a ride from Vegas to Salt Lake City and the driver was playing Dark Side of the Moon. Dark Side was reportedly chosen the day of the show, partially based on sluggish ticket sales for this one venue compared to the rest of the tour. All the Dark Side songs were Phish debuts except for Great Gig (last played July 5, 1994, or 332 shows), although the original album version of Speak to Me was piped through the P.A. on Halloween, 1994 and Breathe was jammed on October 25, 1995. Smells Like Teen Spirit was also a Phish debut.

I purposely avoided setting rules because I wanted to see how many different interpretations and answers there would be.

I picked shows that I know well, so I had to decide to forgo the anticipation and surprise we all love from seeing a live show, and not knowing what comes next.

So what part of the experience do you focus on when answering the question? Do you want to see a top-10 show, or a special venue or event? Do you want to repeat a show you've already seen, or do you want to go in blind? I didn't want to set ground-rules because this is a thought-experiment and we each get to reason it out in our own way, based on what we love about Phish and the Phish experience.

Also, I'm loving some of the answers, especially the less obvious ones (though why I didn't think of Cypress, I don't know).
