1jerrykid It's close my friend, but I have a simple question about this question in MD: why do I care who marries who? If there is someone who can explain to me why some one should not be allowed to marry whoever they choose, please inform me as I am open to hear your point. But the question stands: why does it matter to me if a dude wants to marry a dude or a chick wants to marry a chick? Just for full disclosure, I am a dude happily married to a fantastic and beautiful chick.

the_Crested_Hogchoker The ads against it were absolutely nuts too. They were all about how MA legalized gay marriage and all of a sudden it had to explained to 8th graders that dudes could marry dudes. As if they were teaching kids give rimjobs or something

careful_w_that_axe_Miller Interesting. How do you explain a government policy that may directly differ from a family's values?
Almost as scary as, "hey kids do your parents have any of these?"

1jerrykid My father is a conservative priest who is willing to vote for civil unions but not marriage. he says that the religious connotations that accompany the term "marriage" vs. the legal term "civil union" are really vital and make a difference. if it were simply civil unions, not an issue. but to talk about marriage, that is much different.

A marriage authorized by the state is whatever the state defines it to be. The terminology might be the same, but legally, state marriage and the religious ceremony are two completely different things.

1jerrykid marriage is, in it's origin, a religious rite. so for a person who is religiously conservative (read: NOT ME), there is an important distinction between marriage and civil union. religious interpretation vs. legal interpretation, at least to some, is very important.

the_Crested_Hogchoker The Church down the street had people jumping a broom to support repression of same sex marriage. There were a bunch of people literally leaping over this dumbass broom in the street... total 1870s style local politics

Kurtzboy YES. This makes me happy beyond words. This coupled with the fact that the two "rape-republicans" lost makes me incredibly hopeful for and proud of my country.

Yeah I'm from Maine I'm so happy we passed it. Its been quite a rollercoaster since initially the legislature passed it. Then that was overturned via referendum in 2009. And now 3 years later we got another chance and made the right choice.
