Looking for a Career

jdub18 Permalink
jdub18 I would not want to clutter up with board unless I believed there might be some use for doing so.

In one month I am graduating the University of Georgia with two degrees in International Affairs and Political Science with a focus in international trade, political economies, and middle-eastern foreign policy.

I speak Hebrew fluently and have been studying Arabic for over 10 months and will continue to get better.

I am ideally looking for a job in international trade and development in the private sector, but I am willing to work in any related field, or unrelated field.

I also am willing to relocate for any position. I have been searching for months but haven't heard back from any employers.

I have experience in professional office environments and running a successful restaurant.

If there are any "job creators" on this board, or anybody knows any "job creators" that are searching for an ethical, determined, intelligent, and innovative young employee please pm me. I have resume's on request.

Thanks to anyone that can help or at least send positive vibes my way as my search continues.

The Peace Corps would love to have you, as would the state department. I'd recommend looking into government jobs first. More time off and good retirement (for now).

chalk2001 +1 for learning Arabic. Wish I came out of college being semi-fluent in another language.
+1 for getting two degrees. Wish I got two degrees instead of "combining" majors, which is a joke.
+1 for having some clue of what you want to do. Wish I had a clue.

Welp, you're three points ahead of me from when I came outta school. Took me 6 months to land a "career" job. So, if I extrapolate your three points onto 6 months, divide by the unemployment rate...multiply by 3...carry the four...

I think you'd make a good astronaut.

Ha. No, but seriously, aside from me being bored at work (its 4:30...bear with me) you need to network. Only reason why I got my first job outta school. And don't just give that networking contact a single call to ask for opportunities or an "informational interview" and call it quits hoping they'll take the ball and run for you. You gotta have balls and stay on these guys. Call them once every four or five days. Stay on their radar. Seriously. Only way to get a job is too literally bother them so the next time they hear of a potential opportunity, you'll be the first one that comes to mind. And not because you've been bothering them, but because you've shown a genuine interest.

Good luck.

cactoid You have a very valuable degree and language capability - you should be fine even in this economy. Leverage your University's career offices to find networking events that can get you in the door in DC - work as an aide, a secretary, anything white collar in the State Department.

Envision your goal, break it down into steps, and then use every day to accomplish as much of those steps as you can. Like this, only specialize for your field.

50 Appilcations = 8 phone interviews = 4 real interviews = 1 job

Send out 10 a day until you graduate. That's how I did it anyway.

I can put you in touch if you'd like.

Drgordy Welcome to the real world...

Why not stay in school and get a masters like an MBA? Avoid this stale economy and wait it out another year or two. Plus try to score an internship while you pursue the masters.

Dollop_of_Murk Permalink
Dollop_of_Murk In most jobs I've had, the younger people with degrees were less highly regarded than the people who had already been doing the job for years, regardless of their academic education. So maybe what you need is "life experience" to offset the "college experience."

Travel.

Go teach ESL in the middle east, surf in Indonesia, backpack through the Andes, build a school in Siberia. Just do something wild for a while (Can you live while you're young?) and then parlay that into networking and job opportunities. You'll get a job eventually, have a ton of fun along the way, and open yourself up to new experiences, opportunities, and adventure.

Plus, foreign women are hot. If you're into that sort of thing.
