Shakedown St. on .net?

DirtyAl1173 Permalink
DirtyAl1173 So I was looking through the forum and I hadn't seen this question posed, so, if its in there and I didn't see it then, my apologies.

There seems to be a lot of us on this forum that sell things that we've created. T-shirts, glass, art, whatever. And I was wondering if we could sticky a thread that is a place for all of us to post (once) a link to our website or store. Like a Shakedown St. for the .net.

I looked at the Terms of Use and this was as close to a "No" as I could see:

"3. The sale of services or things (including by posting links) that infringe or may infringe the trademarks and copyrights of Phish, Inc., Phish.net, or The Mockingbird Foundation is not permitted. Other commercial posts or links may be removed at the discretion of site administrators."

"The discretion of site administrators" is where this could be shot down.

I recognize that this forum is hosted by the Mockingbird Foundation and I don't want to be taking potential money away from them. But, I've bought t-shirts from @the_Landlady and seen other forum users posting their wares (myself included).

But a stickied thread where one could post a link to their stuff, then when the rest of the .net is looking for a gift they can start there and buy "local". It'd be something like "I sell this and you can buy it here."

Is this a bad/good idea? Will this cause problems with Mockingbird? Would the admins go for this?

And, again, I'm sorry if this idea has been talked to death already.

I like the idea though I'm not sure the forum wants to get involved with this officially, even as far as sticky-ing a thread. These are private transactions among members and fans.

Helping out a fan by purchasing there artwork / goods is always a great thing to do.

Yeah, see, this is what I was thinking. And if everyone who sold artwork/goods could be all together in one thread, then they'd be easy to find.

Like one post per person and not spamming the thing up. Also maybe only people that are members as of this date. And that the product should be somehow phish/art/music related.

I'll check in with the site team and see if there would be any objections.

By all means, keep brainstorming.

Awesome! I'm down with ground rules (I know, I know there's an irony to having RULES in this community).

Guy_UT What if there was a Shakedown St. section up top with News, Shows, Music, Community, etc.? Then vendors would give a percentage of their profit from .net customers back to .net. Or they could pay a small fee to advertise their hippie-related goods on the superhighway that is .net.

DirtyAl1173 Not a bad idea but keeping up with the % of sales that are directly related to .net would be tricky to keep up with.

Paying a fee would be easier BUT would the fee keep .netters from posting their links? And would posting here guarantee sales? People would have to figure out if its worth paying a fee.

Honestly I hadn't thought about fees/percents of sales/etc. I was thinking more about the community aspect of it.

But I'm open to the idea.....

johnnyd Probably something along the lines of optional donations by the vendors who make sales.
I doubt we'd get into a mandatory fee or advertising model.

So someone who's really into this - draft up a couple bullet point-style guidelines/ground rules. Basic, common sense, to keep stuff organized.

The ToU point, word for word.
Idea of one post each, so make it a good one. (Or alternately, a way to ensure people don't literally spam the thread.)
Maybe a limit on the # of pics in a post, so 1 post doesnt stretch out a whole page...
A request for optional donation to MBF as thanks for providing the marketplace.

Stuff like that. Kick it around, then PM me or post here or something. No rush, but I've got a lot going on right now and cant responsibly volunteer to take point on this.

Also, lets start with a thread, because coding a whole additional section of the site is not gonna happen instantly.

DirtyAl1173 Permalink
DirtyAl1173 Actually, I was just wondering if accepting fees would adversely affect Mockingbird's non-for-profit status? I don't know about all that stuff.

Donations aren't bad either. But the honor system can be tricky.

Let's see if anyone is interested in a Shakedown Thread. If only three people sign up, then is it worth it?

I like the one post per .netter.

But I think it should remain open to all .netters (even the ones that don't know they're .netters yet) but perhaps there should be a waiting period before they're allowed to post. That way they aren't signing up just to hock some crap. But with a waiting period only the new .netters that are serious will post (hopefully the trolls will get tired of waiting and move on).

ONE picture that best represents what you're selling. Why? B/c your website should be filled with pictures.

A short blurb about your goods. "Hey I sell awesome T-shirts!"

A link to your site/store/etc. "Check 'em out here: LINK"

Products should be Phish/music/art/crafts related. There might be some other acceptable products but for now this should be enough.

No sales of drugs/weapons/illegal. We don't want Mockingbird to be accused of drug dealing.

A reprint of the .net ToU to remind users of the copyright infringement issues.

"We'd like to thank the Mockingbird Foundation for giving us this space to share our products. Please make a donation to help keep this community vibrant and alive." Or something to that effect.

Hmmmm any other ideas?

the_Landlady Permalink
the_Landlady @DirtyAl1173 - personally, I think there should be some greater restriction than a waiting period for people to post their stuff, like @johnnyd's idea of only allowing .netters who are currently members. I only say this because if people start using .net solely to sell their shit, and they're not contributing to the community in any other way, then you're not really buying your stuff from a .netter, you're just buying stuff from someone who advertises on .net, which I think defeats the entire purpose.

But overall I really like your idea and your guidelines, well done.
Score: 2

DirtyAl1173 Permalink
DirtyAl1173 Ok, current .netters. Check. I am concerned about the "next generation" of .netters. Can we have some kind of "permission" option? Like, say, someone has posted here for a while (after Shakedown starts) and they want to post, can they get permission? Maybe ask an admin or something? I just don't want to exclude people that come along later that are decent people and aren't just rabble-rousers, trolls, etc.

Update their post: Is there a time limit on the "Edit" function? Can you make a post, then use the edit function for when you update your product line or whatever? I've never tried to edit a post I made months ago. I think being able to update your info is important, though. That's a good idea.

Keep the ideas coming pholks. This is becoming a reality.

Edit: I see that I cannot edit a previous comment. I'll try to come up with a solution.....

DirtyAl1173 @BajaPhish So about pictures...I'll split the difference with you and allow two pics. I don't want the thread to get too bogged down with tons of pics. Sound fair?

Also, when wording the rules, I addressed the "update" option by allowing updates but implying that you should do it rarely. This way one .netter can't just bombard the thread with their post and drown out the others.

About the Phan Art, I'm not going to mention them in the rules. I think its best that since this is being hosted by Mockingbird, the rules should direct traffic to Mockingbird. BUT you're welcome to include Phan Art in your own post, add a link to them, whatever.

And I did allow "new" .netters to post after they've been members for a year. I do understand @the_Landlady 's point about preventing "outsiders" from taking over the thread but I thought it was fair to allow a member that's been on here for a year to be allowed to post.

I'm going to be putting this thread up this morning. @johnnyd is going to look it over and make any changes that may need to be made.

I tried to make the rules fair without being too over the top. I hope ya'll enjoy this and contribute. And feel free to let me know if you think something might be amiss.
