careful_w_that_axe_Miller Train Song

All the way home we felt we had a chance
To review the coulds before we were born
And to invite a new game of can'ts

Absorbed in the clouds a voice from afar said
"With the right device you can make a pattern grow
Or you can tune up your car"

So we stayed on the train admiring the time
As the lights of the city drew near
We drank a little wine

They were blurry and green outer space in between
With a depth and a form unclear
Then we saw it up ahead

A flickering lantern lit up on the tracks
In the rugs that had covered up the bridge
From the banks of a river to the bed
Of the valley upstream to the place we live

The glass on the lantern cast back the sight
Of a drive-in movie we drove by below
We saw where we'd been in the pictures within
Projecting all the places we would go
So we follow the scene and flowed up your steps
To a smooth wooden floor in a trance
The train whistle melody woved through the trees
And in through the door to signal the turns of a dance

Thunder @poonutties - The lyrics to Train Song always reminded me of something you'd expect to find on The Story of the Ghost album (think Roggae, Shafty, Fikus, Frankie Says). Also a fan of the tune.

Thunder Permalink
Thunder It would've been neat to see Strange Design on Billy Breathes in place of Train Song and for Train Song to show up on TSOTG instead of Guyute (which always seemed like it would go nice at the very end of Hoist).

I still don't know how you leave a song that good (Strange Design) off an album. Not that Guyute isn't a great tune in it's own right either, just saying.

Score: 3

careful_w_that_axe_Miller Permalink
careful_w_that_axe_Miller @Thunder, I am huge fan of strange design and I'd consider myself a "page guy" always ready for Lawnbo; but Guyute is unbelievable and may be one of Phish's very best songs imo, I just listened to GTE were Trwy got a new guitar with an ocelot on it from Paul perhaps the sixth guitar? Idk and shaky on the facts but dude, the guitar screams and its so powerful. Love it.

Train song huh, just thinking bout NYE.

Thunder @careful_w_that_axe_Miller - I saw something like 30 shows from 97 til the hiatus in 00. I saw Guyute every 3rd show and I got sick of it as it frequently got butchered in 99 & 00. It's like TTE - an amazing composition, but IMHO, better suited to what Trey does with an orchestra. But yes, when it's nailed, it's awesome. Problem is, to nail a tune like Guyute, it pretty much needs to be in heavy rotation (like any of their heavy composed tunes, especially cause they don't play much anymore), which, to me, is kinda like, been there/done that in the late nineties. Anyways, I think ya missed my point, which was just that Train Song seemed more appropriate for The Story of the Ghost album, Strange Design should've been on Billy Breathes and Guyute seemed more appropriate for Hoist. Sorry to hijack your thread, I'm bored at work.

wolfatthedoor84 Only seen it one time, 10/10/99, which was only one of my first couple of shows. But after a somewhat dissapointing first set IMO, train song seemed to fit perfectly in the second set, which started with a really cool ambient jam into YEM. The lyrics and mood of the song really seemed appropriate for that cool fall night.
Score: 1

Dollop_of_Murk Permalink
Dollop_of_Murk We've all had that moment doing something while listening to Phish and the song or jam fits exactly perfectly right in with what we were doing.

That happened to me one night on the Oregon coast, with Train Song. My friend and I took the day off to go to the beach and were driving back at night towards Portland via 101. Train Song came on as we drew close to Astoria, at the mouth of the Columbia River:

All the way home we felt we had a chance
To review the coulds before we were born
And to invite a new game of can'ts

Absorbed in the clouds a voice from afar said
"With the right device you can make a pattern grow
Or you can tune up your car

So far, so good. Great day at the coast, spiritual freedom, we're driving...

So we stayed on the train admiring the time
As the lights of the city drew near
We drank a little wine

The lights of the city were the lights of Astoria across the water at night. We'd had a few microbrews and smoked a bit earlier that afternoon, and were pleasantly blissed and mellow.

They were blurry and green outer space in between
With a depth and a form unclear
Then we saw it up ahead

A flickering lantern lit up on the tracks
In the rugs that had covered up the bridge
From the banks of a river to the bed
Of the valley upstream to the place we live

We crossed the bridge over the bay and entered Astoria, then headed upstream on the Columbia towards home.

Tell me those aren't some of Phish's best lyrics. What a way to glide home after a fantastic day outside.

Thanks for letting me get all personal. Train Song is one of my favorites and the timing of that song on that trip couldn't have been better. I still remember how my friend and I just drove without speaking, listening to the song and looking out the windows as though the world were being born anew, and just for us.

careful_w_that_axe_Miller @Thunder, that's odd, I tried to quote ya then comment but couldn't, was just going to say that your comment had good information and an interesting point of view. I'm learning yet, I can differentiate songs but as far as "composed pieces" and why they are better suited for orchestra I'm lost. GTE at my first show ever really really did it for me man, whole show was transcendental but the Guyute was top shelf. But again thank you for clarification and the good info
