The main Rift groove is actually a pretty simple Samba beat. The above clave pattern starts on the rim and then moves to the snare, I don't believe that it is absolutely correct, but it is something like this. The Cowbell pattern also moves to the ride for some parts, but pretty much stays the same pattern throughout.
I would just get comfortable playing the Kick on a-1, a-2, a-3 a-4, and the cowbell on and-a, and-a, and-a, and-a at the tempo of the song(120-130?) and then practice reading different clave parts with your left hand.
Pick up the book "On The Beaten Path". It's full of grooves and transcriptions of famous songs and Rift is one of them.AWESOME!!!!!

Can anybody confirm my take on this?It's close but no cigar. It's basically the same type of feel but the Rift riff is a little busier.
