How to play RIFT on drums.

McGrupp04 Permalink
McGrupp04 I've been trying to learn rift on drums but I can't figure it out. Any drummers on here that could give me some tips?

mattsox94 Pick up the book "On The Beaten Path". It's full of grooves and transcriptions of famous songs and Rift is one of them.

The main Rift groove is actually a pretty simple Samba beat. The above clave pattern starts on the rim and then moves to the snare, I don't believe that it is absolutely correct, but it is something like this. The Cowbell pattern also moves to the ride for some parts, but pretty much stays the same pattern throughout.

I would just get comfortable playing the Kick on a-1, a-2, a-3 a-4, and the cowbell on and-a, and-a, and-a, and-a at the tempo of the song(120-130?) and then practice reading different clave parts with your left hand.

fishman4 I just did some serious analyzation of this, I've been a drummer since 7th grade (I'm now a Sophomore in college) and I believe it's the same rhythmic pattern that Fishman does during the jam part of Foam and also in a small section of the composed part of Reba. I figured this by listening to the 5/8/93 version of Rift.

To see the beat I am talking about watch this video and listen to what Fishman does from 2:52 - 2:59 .

You might want to consider using [ pre ] [ /pre ] for these sorts of things, so the characters line up.

e.g.
CB --00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00
RC 0--0--0---0-0--00--0--0---0-0--0
KD 0--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--0

Bulletproof It's pretty simple. Just break it down, start slow and let your muscles learn what they're supposed to do. Just take it bar by bar. That's how I learned the drum part to Limb x Limb.

It's close but no cigar. It's basically the same type of feel but the Rift riff is a little busier.

fishman4 He's definitely doing more in Rift than in that small section of Reba, but I was just saying it's the same rhythmic pattern. They're both in four four, but the two patterns are very similar if you ask me. Not to mention sped up in Rift.

Bulletproof The Rift drum part is much more off beat with the cowbell where as the Reba section has more hightat action on the downbeats. On the Rift drum part the downbeat is played with the left hand doing a click on the snare drum or wood block. The Rift drum part is a variation on a reverse parididdle starting with the left hand.
