I just spent 2 hours typing one of my best write ups to date. And I accidently deleted it.
f*** me.
I just told the whole story of how Dan Healey got fired.
OMG I wrote so much. I want to cry right now.
I set the table for the 2 Chapel Hill shows. This was one of my best write ups ever.
And I deleted it.
I'm sick to my stomach right now.
Sorry...I can't type anymore.
Fuck
It kills me. The whole f***ing reason I ot up at 5:30 to write my ass off for 2 hours was so you guys would appreciate what I'm giving you here. Now everyone is gonna see "1993" and skip this. 3-24-93 might be a top 50 Dead show ALL TIME and I blew the opportunity to share it properly.
So to the 6 of you who will actually download this show today please help me spread the good word.
God I wrote so much...so much. A personal first hand account of what went down in Chapel Hill...of how Dan got fired...about how this was all discussed at Knickerbocker 2 days before...about what Dan told everyone at the next stop after Phil got pissed...
Most importantly about how dominant these shows are, ESPECIALLY 3-24.
I swear I ould scream right now. God help me today

Sorry, you lost your write-up. Thanks for the show, though. Did you end up seeing Dylan yesterday?
Of course that wasn't the only thing (Healey was a coke head, he didn't do drugs with Jerry). He had been letting...
Never mind. Maybe later
The rumor I've always heard is that Healy was a pretty mean cokehead at this point, trading patches to the board for eightballs, etc. I think Bobby and Phil found out and that was the end. I know that Bobby always had a bone with him to begin with. Healy was supposedly always messing with Weir's gear and sound.
At Knickerbocker he talked Dan into using some new harness (or whatever) to allow everyone to patch in.
(To be continued...)
sorry to hear, i enjoy your wright ups alot. i always make sure i read the whole wright up before i download the show. then listen to the show at work every wednesday. i appreciate your hard work and enjoy your writing.
thank you
thank you
My taper buddy Jay describes a guy who, pardon this description, was like the "Antelope Greg" of the tapers section. Always already there, whispering and conversing with Dan all the time, front and center...and rumor was he was "The Guy" who plugged into the board for every show.Okay, question for Zappa people too, is that who Gary Titone was too? Basically the Greg of the Zappa world?

It because of these 2 soundboards right here. Dan threw a patch out to the tapers section and everyone walked away with A+ virgin soundboards.well, that makes sense, i suppose. funny how the band's attitude toward tapers became more restrictive as they became richer. jerry once said "once we're finished with it (the music), they can have it". guess bob and phil didn't remember that.

Just came in to point out these versions of Memphis Blues and Roses from the 24th. Both are STELLAR! Jerry's vocals on Roses are amazing.
And don't miss this China Rider!
@gladtobeaglenn - In all fairness , this has nothing to do with the band's policy on audio taping. We're talking about patching into the board and getting direct feeds.thank you Mike! having jumped on the bus 3/15/73 Nassau Col. I have been through thick and thin with the boys - when I think about them I tend to remember them in those halcyon days of "anything goes". i realize that they had to protect their interests as times changed and the stakes increased exponentially. I'll check the China Rider later tonight - thanks again man!

Hey man, I appreciate these every week.
Write up or no write up, I know that what you're gonna put up is always going to be good.
Thanks for the show! Much appreciated.

I'm pretty sure we all know to take your word for it when you tell us a show kicks ass. Download commencing in T-minus 10 seconds...
When you write your book on all of these write ups, you can add this weeks in.
Keep in mind, if you don't write a book about all of these stories, I'm going to do it sooner or later. Because these stories would be amazing in paper form.
I've been without a computer for almost a month now. My last one died for good, and I'm in the process of remodeling my whole house. I won't be getting a new tower until all the rooms are put back together and I get my new carpet. So I've been using my i-phone (still new to me) and random access to other people's lap-tops to get by these past few weeks.
All the links above tell the story well. Basically 3-24-93 was the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back" in the strained relations between the band and Dan. Part of it was the drugs (cocaine really brings out the bad in all of us doesn't it?), part was the way he leaked soundboards without permission, part was his self-entitled, egotistical arrogance (such as feeling free to interject sounds and digital effects into the live performances without "permission" to do so), all that stuff.
But they let him go I believe in Spring of '94 sometime. I can't remember exactly when, but I think I remember him being at the board for the Rosemont - Richfield run in Spring '94. After that the mix was abysmal. Matthews or whoever they stuck back there was terrible. That guy couldn't mix a bag on nuts, let alone a Giants Stadium performance.
These 2 shows spread like wildfire. I got my hands on the China > Rider set as soon as tour ended. The 24th came a few weeks later. Back then (not to keep sounding like that but its true) it was SPECIAL to get your hands on a soundboard within a month or two of a performance. Hell, even having an audience a few weeks later was big. This was unheard of...EVERYONE got copies.
The performancers are an excellent snapshot of how solid Spring '93 was. This was probably the last "positive" tour I can remember, nobody was murmuring about the demise of the band, about the lackluster performances, any of that stuff you hear about today when you mention 1993. It wasn't like that.
Yet.
