So - Peter Gabriel
Graceland - Paul Simon
Duke - Genesis
In The Dark - GD
Freedom of Choice - Devo

johnnyd Phish.net Staff Permalink
johnnyd At the time, or counting lasting impact as well?

Either way: Paul's Boutique (though this really just slides in and should be a 90s album)

And yeah, Appetite.
1984
Raisin Hell
Radio
Thriller

TomSawyer Permalink
TomSawyer Some i'd like to add

Meat Puppets II- Meat Puppets
Surfer Rosa- Pixies

That's what I can come up with off the top of my head.

Capricornio Permalink
Capricornio Off the top of my head:

The Sugar Cubes - Life's Too Good
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
MJ - Thriller
The Cure - Disintegration
The Police - Synchronicity
Jane's Addiction -Nothing's Shocking

The '80s are easily my favorite time for music, but a ton of what I love are bands that only had one or two hits and not necessarily great albums.

Do you like Huey Lewis and The News?

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

johnnyd @the_clever_ruse: OK, I'll bite on that.
Jacob's Ladder > Hip to be Square
Now, I haven't listened to either in decades, but thats how I remember it.

This is just gonna go downhill.
I'm gonna be singing the virtues of Dr. Feelgood, New Jersey, and Madonna pretty soon.

freerwilson Most of my all time favorites come from the 70's, but the 80's have some heavy hitters too. My personal favorites:

1. Moving Pictures
2. Back in Black
3. British Steel by Judas Priest
4. Blackout by The Scorpions
5. Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits
6. Def Leppard's High n Dry and Pyromania

Rock n Roll, mullets, and lots of dead brain cells - fun!

spaced Permalink
spaced Not even going to try an actual list, but Fugazi - 13 Songs would probably be on there (just barely makes it, being late 1989), plus Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime, Husker Du - Zen Arcade, and definitely something by Sonic Youth, probably Sister, or maybe Daydream Nation, which I suppose is the more obvious call. And of course Talking Heads. And a ton of seminal hip-hop albums. Yikes, this is why I didn't try to make a list.

You know, it's funny that the 80s has a reputation for being a cultural wasteland, since there sure was a shit-ton of great music released during that decade.
