Anybody know about a reliable brand that I could look into or maybe a specific model?
Thanks
Do you use windows or mac? I have a Rugged with my Mac. It is 500 GB and 7200rpm. It has served me very well although they have upgraded quite a bit now:
Rugged 1TB
1TB storage, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt capability.
At any rate, the smartest thing to do when shopping on the internet is find a product you deem worthy of buying and then go out of your way to read every review written for it. People are good about reporting back about the good and more importantly the bad.

edit: to be clear, I got a 1TB and it is filling faster than expected.
Wow that one is really impressive, I am liking that a lot. Quite a bit more expensive than some of the others I have been looking into but probably worth it in the long run.
actually been trying to do research on these. my girl has got a bunch of kids photos and videos that she wants to save as well as music. thinking it would be a good christmas present.
any information on this sort of this would be much appreciated. but im thinking why not go with the 4tb for $210.00
This one looks pretty crazy 2Tb external hard drivefor just about 60$ more you get 2 more tb with western digitals, my book 4tb.
@ReadIcculus_ said:In the long run probably a good move. I just could not see myself using 4,000 GB in the next few years. And who knows by that time external hard drives may be a lot more efficient than they are now. This one looks pretty crazy 2Tb external hard drivefor just about 60$ more you get 2 more tb with western digitals, my book 4tb.
i am trying to figure out the best solution for storing a shit load of kids pictures and videos as well as music. i just thought since its only $60 more why not.
I have a Western Digital Elements 2TB. The first one unceremoniously went belly up after 6 months, but they replaced it for free (bastards charged me for shipping though), and the replacement has been working fine for over a year now. Make of that what you will.
True story: I had that WD drive die after 6 months of intermittent use, but, on the other hand, this very morning I woke up to find that I had finally lost my trusty IBM 120GB workhorse that had been running daily for 8 goddamn years (no joke). Moral of the story is you never know how long a drive will last.
I'd probably get bigger than a 1TB though. Storage is so cheap these days and it's always nice to have room to expand. I thought 2TB was unfathomably big when I got it, but I've almost filled it up without really trying. If you've got an extra 40 bucks or so, why not double your capacity, is my philosophy on that, but it's up to you.

make sure your PC/Laptop can support USB 3.0.... 2.0 is still the norm for computers over a year old.

i bought my 1 tb 1+years ago fo $160
if you can afford it go big, no such thing as having too much music
I have a Seagate 1tb and it transitions between mac and PC very well. I dig it. I know that there is a formatting function you need to install prior to uploading onto the hard drive in order for it to be compatible between operating systems though. So I would look into that no matter what type of computer you are working with
@ReadIcculus_ said:This is a very good point. But I believe USB 3.0 devices will work with 2.0 as well, you just have to use a 2.0 cable, which should still plug into the 3.0 port on the drive. It might not come with a USB 2.0 cable though, so you may have to buy one. This one looks pretty crazy 2Tb external hard drive

Get the 2TB. it doesnt cost much more than the 1TB and youre gonna need the space....eventually
Western Digital is terrible brand! I'm 0-1 on that product. Its terrible. I have tons of files I cant load AT ALL... because its extremely slow and cannot be loaded up. Now I have to find someone to transfer these files into a new hard driveIve never had any issues with speed or files not loading.
