Final answer..."We heard his sister screamin', as he raised his hammer high..."
Rock a William
Bring it back!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBubAvBbtXYI've never thought of that song as dark, I always thought of it as beautiful and soaring. It's just such a magnificent song to me; where I feel as nothing is wrong.
Just curious I am looking something that sounds dark. Also, if you're looking for dark, this is possibly the funniest (but definitely the darkest, at the end) Mockingbird narration I've ever heard:
/tōn/
Noun
The overall quality of a musical or vocal sound: "the piano tone is lacking in warmth".
Verb
Give greater strength or firmness to (the body or a part of it): "exercise tones up the muscles".
Synonyms
noun. tint - note - sound - tune
verb. tune - harmonize
Not,
Tone: the writer's attitude toward the material and/or readers. Tone may be playful, formal, intimate, angry, serious, ironic, outraged, baffled, tender, serene, depressed, etc.
Huh. Stoned out if my brain but figured out that it is hard to communicate when we use words with different perceived definitions, this is a classic example with regard to a musicians ear and writers eyes meaning your talking about sound and I'm talking about the lyrics.
Huh, Esther's can be menacing, or stormy which could be a form of "dark"
But, the low sounds in carini or aspects TFTB, though TFTB brings it right back up.
What's the Use.I never heard it, not ashamed to say it because I cannot wait to hear it live should I have the opportunity. I listened to 5 sec and IMO yes thats dark.
Ty @doglin, for sharing that gem
I alwayth thought A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing was pretty dark. After all it's a shining light in darkness deep.
bowie intros.
Big Cypress Mike's, there's an awesome video of it on youtube too

At the time, a lot of people didn't like it because it didn't return to Hood, but it works really well. No one talks about it any more.
I thought I heard it coming this year at Dicks N3, but no luck. Twenty Years Later filled the darkness quotient there, though I'd have preferred Roggae in that slot.

I think the descending rift in the last 2 minutes of Twenty Years Later is very dark. Almost Zepplinesque. Would like to see that jammed out one day.try spac 09 on for size

"Fukuoka Jam #1."No kidding, though, this jam is DARK. I listened to this once while starting to doze off into a nap -- then I had a dream about my own mortality.
True story.

I like this thread, as I feel as if Phish's darker material -- however you want to define dark -- doesn't get talked about enough.
I suspect the reason they don't talk about that anymore is precisely because the band never returned to Hood. Had they done so, people would, I think, still be talking about it. Hood, of course, offers one of the most uplifting jams in Phish's repertoire; What's The Use one of the darkest. Segueing from Hood to WTU was, to my ears, really inspired. It felt like a slow-motion free fall from the clouds to the bottom of a very murky ocean. Had they then just as slowly surfaced back into Hood, they would have taken everyone on a trip with some meaningful destination. Think of that euphoric jam that emerges from the darkness in the middle of the Providence Bowie. It feels like the light at the end of the tunnel, although it isn't quite. By electing to go into Velvet Sea instead of back into Hood, the band goes from light and happy to dark and dismal and then into wistful melancholy. It was deeply awkward, imho, and suggested to me then (I was there) that Trey was not thinking about the emotional aspects of his music but just the setlist aspects. For me, it was a missed opportunity.
Try the Portsmouth '12 Hood> What's the Use> Wading in the Velvet Sea.

@Dollop_of_Murk said:I think you nailed it about why this song sequence isn't very popular, and I like your description of the sonic journey. I totally understand why a return to Hood would've been perfect, but I also think this is a prime example of, as you said, "deeply awkward" Phish. It's similar in some ways to all the other things Phish does that challenge their listeners, especially new listeners. It makes people uncomfortable. It forces listeners out of their comfort zone. In a small way, it redefines what Phish is. It's definitely Phish on the edge, on the boundary, and if I could ask the band about the song selection here, I bet we'd get an emotional answer.I suspect the reason they don't talk about that anymore is precisely because the band never returned to Hood. There's a lot of reasons to like this sequence, just as there are reasons to not like it. What was it like in the crowd when this was going down? On my AUD there's a break in WTU where the crowd is obviously ready for a return to Hood, and they don't receive it. Phish was playing with emotion right there, which is maybe the only place we disagree.
