Carini: The best Phish debut ever

Ian_cman Permalink
Ian_cman Just finished listening to the 1997 Euro winter tour. The Carini debut on 2-17-97 is a monster. Sandwiched between DWD and Taste -> DWD, this 45 minutes is the highlight of the tour in my opinion.
Has there ever been a better Phish original debut? I can’t think of any.

Thunder Permalink
Thunder The sorta debut of DWD on 12/31/93 is a special thing. I say sorta cause it's just the jam, not the full tune. Either way, it must have torn head's off the Centrum. It's on the Live Bait from Worcester if anyone's looking for it.

December 31, 1993

Worcester Centrum Centre, Worcester, MA

Set 1: Llama, Guelah Papyrus, Stash, Ginseng Sullivan[1], Reba, Peaches en Regalia, I Didn't Know, Run Like an Antelope[2]

Set 2: Tweezer[3] > Halley's Comet > Poor Heart > It's Ice[4] > Fee[5] > Possum[6], Lawn Boy, You Enjoy Myself[7]

Set 3: Auld Lang Syne > Down with Disease Jam[8] > Split Open and Melt, The Lizards, Sparkle > Suzy Greenberg[9] > Hold Your Head Up > Cracklin' Rosie > Hold Your Head Up[10], Harry Hood[11], Tweezer Reprise

Encore: Golgi Apparatus, Amazing Grace

[1] Trey on acoustic guitar, Mike on upright bass, Page on piano and Fish on Madonna washboard.
[2] Tom Marshall on vocals.
[3] Jean Pierre tease from Trey.
[4] Peaches en Regalia teases and a Random Note signal.
[5] Trey sang verses through megaphone.
[6] Peaches en Regalia and Earache My Eye teases.
[7] HYHU tease in vocal jam.
[8] Auld Lang Syne tease.
[9] Smoke on the Water and Peaches en Regalia teases.
[10] Peaches en Regalia tease by Trey on drums.
[11] Brief Odd Couple theme tease from Page; Auld Lang Syne tease.

Notes: Ginseng Sullivan featured Trey on acoustic guitar, Mike on upright bass, Page on piano and Fish on Madonna washboard and was preceded by a Roundabout tease. Antelope featured Tom Marshall on vocals. Tweezer contained a Jean Pierre tease from Trey. It's Ice contained a Random Note signal. The band put on wet suits during the end of the YEM vocal jam, which contained a HYHU tease. The third set was preceded by bubble noises through the PA and the band “diving” into the aquarium on stage. Peaches en Regalia was teased in It’s Ice, Possum, Suzy Greenberg and at the end of the second HYHU (by Trey on drums). Possum also contained an Earache My Eye tease. Auld Lang Syne was teased in the DWD Jam and Hood. Suzy also contained a Smoke on the Water tease and Hood also contained a brief Odd Couple theme tease from Page. Trey sang the verses of Fee through a megaphone. The entire show was broadcast live (and rebroadcast the following day) on Boston's WBCN 104.1 FM.

Mr_Miner I was at that NYE show...it rips. The DWD jam smokes....best part of the song.

spacecoyote I think the US debut of Carini kicks the most ass.

December 30, 1997

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

Set 1: Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley[1] -> Taste, Water in the Sky > Punch You In the Eye > Stash, Chalk Dust Torture, A Day in the Life

Set 2: AC/DC Bag[2] > McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters, Harpua[3] > I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)[4] > Harpua > Izabella > Harry Hood[5] -> My Soul > Sleeping Monkey > Guyute

Encore: Carini -> Black-Eyed Katy -> Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley[1] > Frankenstein

[1] No vocal jam.
[2] Third Stone From the Sun and Psycho Killer teases.
[3] "Pentagram Harpua;" also included a narrative about Lost in Space.
[4] Phish debut; Tom Marshall on vocals.
[5] Unfinished.

Notes: AC/DC Bag included Third Stone From the Sun and Psycho Killer teases. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) made its Phish debut and was sung by Tom Marshall as part of the “Pentagram Harpua,” which also included a narrative about Lost in Space. Hood was unfinished. Pete Carini made an appearance on-stage during the encore. Frankenstein included a segment with Fishman coming center stage with his vacuum. The encore was unusually long; once the band realized they were going to be fined for playing past midnight, they decided to play well past midnight. Sneakin’ Sally was played for the first time since May 28, 1989 (919 shows). Neither of the Sallys contained vocal jams. This show is available as an archival release on LivePhish.com.

My friends and I had been listening to those tapes from Europe all year. When the encore started that night the Garden erupted with energy I've seldom seen. Fukcing uhmazing.

I must disagree. The winner is Emotional Rescue.
Yes ER Winston-Salem is superior and probably many other covers as well. I was trying to think of the debut of original compositions that lit it up like Carini.
