Record Store Day Black Friday Edition

mjrphishhead Permalink
mjrphishhead Any vinyl junkies make their way out to a record store today? I sure as hell didn't but my buddy picked me up a copy of the 05/30/71 Grateful Dead release. I have a great friend :)

DrPeterVenkman No stores take part in that up here, I have to rely on the good graces of friends, it's being worked on now. I'm looking for that GD release, Judas Priest Screaming For Vengeance (picture disc, nice) and Miles Davis Sketches Of Spain.

beach I was able to get most of what I wanted -

GD release
Zappa 7"
Beefheart 7" Abba Zabba
Beefheart 7" Plastic Factory
Rolling Stones ep
Dylan 7" Duquesne Whistle

I arrived about 20 minutes before opening time and was fourth in line. Turn out was much lower than this past April's RSD. The number of releases was only a fraction of what was released last April and not as interesting, but I was still surprised there were so few people there.

Just put the kid down for a nap. Time to jump in.

Nice, what's on the Stones EP?

beach It was their first release..

You Better Move On
Poison Ivy
Bye Bye Johnny
Money

I was excited about this one b/c I don't think Poison Ivy or Bye Bye Johny made it onto any of their US or British releases, including greatest hit packages. May be mistaken about that though. Nonetheless, I didn't have either in my collection.

beach The Dylan 7" is very nice. Great version of Meet Me in the Morning. Not sure if it's the same version as what's on the BOTT NY Sessions bootleg though. It was recorded on 9/19/74 and if i remember correctly the NY sesseions were in September '74. Will have to break that out and compare.

Yea, picked up the GD release at 2 different stores. Hoping my buddy wants 1. If not, I will post something on here for face value. I was surprised at how little the turnout was at each location. Hopefully this does not kill off these types of events throughout the year.

I think the holiday and what was released had a big impact on turnout. More artists or their estates need to jump on RSD and release some rarities that'll bring people out. It's such a good thing for the independent stores that have managed to survive and I'd hate to see it end.

Do you what the story with the GD release is? Why is it only a portion of the 2nd set? Cost issue?

Isosceles_Kramer Permalink
Isosceles_Kramer Turnout is typically lower for the Black Friday edition of Record Store Day. A smaller number of releases and the addition of being able to pre-order releases in some cases reduce the number of people showing up at the store. with that being said, I would only expect numbers to increase on the RSD in April

Please let me know if it is the same version as the bootleg, or a previously unreleased version!

Would love a chance to buy the Dead release if you decide to sell.

the_Crested_Hogchoker They had Beatles remasters for $15, I snagged a couple of those

Godspeed You! Black Emporer- I had never heard these guys before. I needed something fresh that is this heavy. It's pretty solid.

Grizzly Bear, Yellow House- which is a fantastic album.

...and I finally found the Field Trip DVD. I'm saving that shit until after exams for Stone-a-Thon 2012.

I'm not sure if your local record store is doing this, but mine told me they are doing record store day all week, and that they are getting shipments of more of the specials in later in the week in addition to yesterday's. So, if you missed out on something you're looking for, check your store. They may be getting some more copies shipped in during the week.

This is definitely not the BOTT NY Sessions bootleg version, which after listening and a little research is actually the same as the official release version. It was recorded during the NY sessions and is much slower and has a Robert Johnson vibe to it. It's rumored that it's going to be included on a future bootleg series release.
