If I made a top 10 best guitarists list, I'd probably have him at #1. But I don't care for those sorts of lists. I prefer a growing collection of those who could be considered amongst the all time greats. Hendrix and Django are both utterly one of a kind. Their music has been analyzed, deconstructed, reconstructed, transcribed, and transposed and still no one can figure out how they did exactly what they did.
From a technical perspective, I bet Djengo could learn what Hendrix was doing more easily than Hendrix learning what Djengo was doing. But I agree the comparisons seem shallow. They were both masters who took their craft to the next level. And made it seem effortless to boot!
Plus Django was handicapped in his left hand which makes his story even more special and his talent beyond the beyond. Obviously, this fact was an inspiration to the young Jerry Garcia to continue to learn guitar despite the loss of a finger.
"He played all of his guitar solos with only two fingers, and used the two injured digits only for chord work."[8]
With his injury and his jazzy style Django is not comparable to Jimi, although it would have been amazing to see them play together. They are two of the most influential guitarists of all time and have a similarly devoted following, yet that is were the comparisons end
