Where to start with Strangefolk??

RR1994 Permalink
I listened to some of the music people have been posting on here lately by them and I really dig it, but I'm kind of clueless on where to start. Good shows? Good jams? Good songs? I literally know nothing about them, and google isn't too much help with them. Are they kind of a cult band?

JordanThePhisherman A Great Long While, the first time I listened to them was like 2 weeks ago, and it was that album. I saw them last night and it was fabulous. @Jimmymac03 will probably give some great advice on what to start with. I have no idea if they are a cult band or not, but it seemed like everyone knew every word to every song at last night's show.

Jimmymac03 @JordanThePhisherman hit the nail on the head, Great Long While is their best studio effort IMO. All their studio stuf is great though. This is like telling a Phish fan to listen to Billy Breathes though. Their live show rules. The difference with Strangefolk is instead of the music alone getting you off, their lyrics get you off. Every lyric is matched with the instrumentation perfectly matching the mood though. These guys really are amazing.

For a few live offerings (but they are all great) see THIS THREAD RIGHT HERE for some live recommendations.

Hey @Jimmymac03 I downloaded that 12/31/1997 show in the thread you linked. Are there any signature songs or anything I should check out? I know sometimes it's easy to say "all of them!" but as a complete noob here, I'd like somewhere to start. I loved that Alaska song somebody linked in one of the strange folk threads here recently. Wasn't it you who said 1997 is their best year?

Jimmymac03 @RR1994 Some classics, regardless of show/album:

Cabin John
Sinner
Shift My Step
Songbeard
Speculator
Stouthearted Man
Rather Go Fishin'
Lines And Circles
Walnut
Dance (for your Disco-ish fix)
and so many more really.

JordanThePhisherman I usually have a very hard time getting hooked onto a band's music, not the case for me and Strangefolk tho. I immediately got attached to their great melodies and songwriting skills. I got hooked onto Strangefolk faster than I did with Phish (even though I still like Phish a lot more). Strangefolk probably takes the second slot in my favorite jam bands, after Phish.

daveritz18 http://archive.org/details/Strangefolk [/url]--------------I would browse the years 1996-2000 when Reid Geneuer was still in the band--Although they have done some shows in 2012 w/ Reid and I'm sure they are also great-- there are plenty of quality sounding shows that you can stream and also download---from 2001 till 2011 it's a different sounding band and while its still jams, I prefer the stuff with Reid---I would also check out on archive.org , the band Assembly of Dust

tmwsiy Nothing really mysterious or cultish about them. Had a small core of dedicated fans- like God St Wine and other minor bands of the era. Can't really go wrong- just pick a bunch of shows and listen. Nothing exponentially better or worse than the rest. Though like others have said, the Reid era was probably the best.
