"History Of: Phish" project

WGphan92 Permalink
WGphan92 Alright, so for my final project for my History of Rock Music class (yes, that exists), I have to create a 2-Disc collection of songs that provide the "history of:_______". Clearly, I chose Phish. So here's what Im asking. Provide a list of songs from a variety of shows spanning the late 80's till Now, that would best serve an example of their progression through the years.
ex: for 94, Id include a "phishgrass" tune, or '97, a funk jam. 99-04 maybe show the ambiance, or dissonance of 2.0...... I think you get the point.

if you don't mind providing a reason why you picked that particular song/performance, that be cool to. lol

The collection has to fit on 2-CD's to turn in the the professor.
ps. he's a hugeee deadhead.

Definitely. Their early shows were full of many people there mainly to hear covers. Scarlet, Eyes, Boogie. . . . When they played one too many of "their weird" originals, the party/bar/event would empty out. It was lame, but many of those shows suffered from poor sound, equipment malfunctions, kegs running out, etc.

On the bootlegs, you can hear Trey's comments regarding the people exiting. Good for us they did not let it grind them down.

For every person who left those early shows, another stuck around. Some got "IT." And some will be seeing them, yet again, in one month.

Sounds like a cool project/class.

Nope, im at SUNY Oneonta in upstate, NY. and yeah i think im gonna be cutting the tracks straight to the jams, or segments of jams, to be able to fit more on each CD.

i have plenty of material to work with and do this on my own, im merely coming here for your suggestions to really narrow things down.

Potato_Sacks 1. Colorado '88 Antelope
2. 8.21.87 Shaggy Dog
3.11/23/85 Whipping Post Jam (Mike's epiphany show, first BIG jam that I know of)

'90-'93
1. 8/13/93 Gin
2. 4/21/93 SOAMelt (The one that made it on to Hoist)
3. 5/17/92 Possum

'94-'96
1. 7.8.94 Stash (crazy tension and release a la 94)
2. 12/31/95 Whole Show (Ranked as one of the top live performances ever. There's History)
3.
'97 & '98
1. 3/1/97 Mike's Groove
2. 11.23.97 BEK (relatively concise funk-town characteristic of the era)
3. Bathtub Gin (7/29/98) - Has so many different movements and is just face-melting!

'99-'04
1. Sand, 12/13/99
2. Waves, 8-2-03 - Great soloing and then a very ambient ending. Pretty much anything from IT could be used though to define the year.
3. Tweezer 2/28/03 - Standout jam of 2.0, and mostly because you don't have a Tweezer yet
'09-'12
1. 8/9/11 Light (Great example of "storage" jamming)
2. 6/8/12 Roses. Lays down a completely different style of Jamming, Trance-Adellic Funk.
3.

I wouldnt use all of 12/31/95 whole show, Maybe just Mockingbird?
I would also go out on a limb and say something in the 90-93 Range needs to be replaced with ALS > DWD Jam.
