What do you read to?
For me its usually something along the lines of Floyd, but recently its been The Apollo Project.
Depends. If its really deep stuff then I need quiet to process it with understanding, other than that Phish.radio 24/6 don't have to worry bout nothing just hit play.Yeahh thats very true if its some deep shit, then no music is the best situation, but for some pleasure reading, music making it all the better!
I really like the idea of not attending to the music in order to maintain focus on the text. Share some ideas so I can create a music playlist that varies from phish=)
One which I used to listen to all the time was Ghosts I-IV by Nine Inch Nails. It's all instrumental. From the wikipedia page for this album: "Reznor described the music of Ghosts as 'a soundtrack for daydreams,' a sentiment echoed by many critics who compared it with the work of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp."That's seems very logically like a great choice
Recently started listening to Everyone Orchestra, and I think it fits quite nicely here.

I know some people have difficulty reading with music playing, but personally I find it soothing and not distracting in the least bit, but more provoking.Eno - Apollo, Ambient 1 or 4, or Thursday Afternoon, Discreet Music (track 1)

The Chillout SessionsGood Lovin'!
great for reading and laying around with your significant other
Kind of an insult to some really great jazz artists.I'm sorry man. Really just trying to gather different prospectives.
Honestly I will return to "The Chillout Sessions" beyond just lovin' and reading. But if i wasnt for a connection through these pleasure, I would't appreciate it at all.

Are you really into Coltrane?
I personally find that if I'm really digging a tune I will get nothing done but mentally fall into a state of bliss where no reading gets done.
Usually attempt to keep that stuff for driving, longboarding, biking, hiking, and other physical or mentally concentrated activities.
I always read with music on in the background. I'm one of those people who can't stand silence. It's too distracting.
As a high school student, I frequently find I need quiet in order to read, even when I'm not gonna get it.
So. I clamp on the headphones and throw on one of these artists
Stars of the Lid (as mentioned earlier)
Tim Hecker
William Basinski (The Disintegration Loops are amazing)
SUNN O))) (a little jarring if you're not into drone metal)
Earth
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (For which there is also a separate thread on the front page right now)
The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble
Nicholas Jaar
Oneohtrix Point Never
Slow Six
Boards of Canada
Plus other various post rock and ambient / droney stuff.
But If I'm doing some math or something like that, then I can listen to jazz and not totally lose my train of thought. I'm a fan of:
Coltrane
Thelonious Monk (especially his stuff with Coltrane, man that stuff is awesome).
Bill Evans
obviously Miles Davis (particularly Sketches of Spain has been on repeat a lot. Everyone should be required to listen to Kind of Blue)
Charlie Parker
Charles Mingus
Eric Dolphy
Andrew Hill
I listen to smatterings of classical while I work too, but I don't understand the nuances of it nearly as much as jazz or any other genre.

6/22/94 icculus on repeat.
@surroundsoundI'd have to second that...Great Artists listed there.
You have a real mature sense of music
Also some post-rock. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the sky, Do Make Say Think, Mogwai etc.
I like to read to either jazz or classical. Bela Fleck is also great to read to. I can't have anything with lyrics, especially if I know the lyrics.Instrumental Phish is also good unless I get too tuned into the jam.
I'm too ADD to listen to anything with lyrics and actually comprehend what I'm reading.
