THe great 12/29/1997 show ticket stub says it was 27.50 to see Phish. Unreal.
Obviously it was a different time but id like to know how it has changed. Has it?
MSG has always been a tough ticket because of demand. Also it's NYC and everything is a process here. Personally I hate the recent renovations, but am hopeful the new GA sections bring back some of the old glory that dominated the 95 and 97 runs.

What was considered a ridiculous price for a ticket? Was it impossible to find a face value ticket like it is now?
Cant speak to 97 or 98 as I didnt try for tix those years.
Having the free flow of information and hype certainly doesnt hurt the aftermarkets.
Hard for me to say because I've never paid more than face. But it doesn't seem that different than today for me. Maybe people weren't paying 500, but they were paying 200 (which makes sense when you look at that stub from 97). And it's never impossible to find a ticket for face IMO
I wish
Still got in though.
On NYE outside the Garden on 12-31-98 I saw various sellers asking for over 200 dollars for a $35.00 ticket.
So with inflation in mind it was just as bad.
I was denied mail order in 98. Got the 28 and 29 and skunked on the 30 and 31.interesting. thanks for the good answer.

Mail order was more work too, but a lot more fruitful for a lot more people. Good envelope artwork would actually increase your chances of getting tickets and you had to actually have the money on hand for every ticket you requested. That certainly cut down on people putting in multiple requestsI remember decorating the mail order envelopes!! I would get my super creative friends to help and hope my mail order was picked. I got a few Dead tickets and a few Phish tickets thru mail order
I saw a Grateful Dead exhibit in NYC a few years ago and they had a bunch on display. Very cool
I mail ordered for 1995 ($30.00) for New Years, as did a bunch of other friends. Everyone I knew got tickets.
I do remember some scalpers outside MSG trying to get $70-100 for tickets.
and yes i mail ordered 95 new years and gave away my tickets..........

I mail ordered for NYE 95 and got my tix no problems. Still have the stub. Which is amazing because I wasn't very careful with stubs back then.

http://forum.phish.net/thread.php?thread=1349308336By the rate of inflation, or following the consumer price index, a ticket that was $30 in 1995 would cost $43.73 as of the end of 2011. If scalpers were charging $70 to $100, then the scalpers are NOT following the CPI. Tickets are $75 now, so scalpers asking $500 are out of their minds.
