What's that effect/trick Trey uses/does thread

jerryguscia Permalink
jerryguscia Alright, so sometimes, I know some of us have questions on some Jedi skill Trey pulls out or some effect we can't figure out; so I figured maybe there could be a designated thread for it or not.

Anyways, MY question is about that phasing/delay effect Trey uses at 11:09 (LP recording) in the 08/09/2011 Light?

If you don't have the recording, it's 11:16 in this video:

MomaDan whammy + tremolo with boomerang loops in the background. The whammy gives that higher pitched screech while Trey hits the tremolo for that choppy breakup. At 11:49 the volume pedal looking thing is the speed rate for the tremolo.

ledzepmaster What @MomaDan said. Trey uses the whammy one octave up with the dry guitar signal simultaneously often in jams. Giving that really staccato guitar tone.

I know this sound has been around since the 90s -- I've been told maybe it's a pitch shifter/harmonics pedal or some unique combo of pedals controlled by one foot switch? I hear it in almost every version of Undermind. A definitive answer would be great...so I can at least stop calling it the robot pedal.

I'f I'm hearing what I think I'm hearing. it is the whammy set to 2 octaves up. He does the same thing in the Dicks Tweezer when they go into the major jam.

mgh2001 Yeah I would think the "robot" sound you are hearing is an octave (or double) which he's been doing for a long time. I think it became prominent in 98ish but I'm sure he used it years before then.

ledzepmaster In the McGrupp at 7:10, that is what I was talking about in my first comment. The one octave up with the dry signal.

The whammy has a 2 octave up function, but not also WITH the dry signal. Which you can clearly hear during the McGrupp.

Trey also used this for the DCU Roses jam.

relax_ Sweet, thanks fellas!

Here's another example from recent memory. I'm guessing it's the same premise (@2:35 -ish):

Yes. It is the whammy. it sounds like he is just doing a pitch shift. The tremolo is also back there too, at least for some of the solo.

ledzepmaster For that Undermind, the tremolo is on subtly there. But yea that whammy function is one off the Harmony side... possibly the 4th up. Not positive which whammy selection.

ledzepmaster So that's what that is!! I always wondered what that was during the Mind Left Body jam. I knew it had to be his old digital delay, he's prob tweaked the thing so much that's why it just glitches when he uses it now.

Thanks for sharing that Buried Alive.

Hover over the items surrounding him. They've labeled everything -- even the 'Jimi Hendrix Woodstock Figurine', haha.

So, tell me about Bradshaw Buttons. Are they preset effects?

check out www.strangedesign.org . while not 100% up-to-date, many of your questions will be answered in the Trey's Rig link and in the Trey's Rig thread/forums!

I just wish they would provide examples of Trey using each effect.

DisSpence Can anyone lend some insight on the effects used to generate the inter-galactic shredding mania on the Auburn Hills Tweezer? I'm talking about the insanity that ensues AFTER the space-funk at the begging of the jam. In other words, pretty much everything Trey plays after 13:30 on the AUD from the spreadsheet.

Seriously, it blows my mind every time. Trey was channeling sounds from outer space.

ledzepmaster @relax_ @Roverphish, Trey's website hasn't updated the gear page since 2009. Maybe 2010. Strange Design hasn't updated it's gear page since like 2004... Doesn't even have his Ross compressor or the TC repeater delay on the list.

Also you can youtube said effect to hear what it sounds like... it doe not need to be played by Trey to hear said effect.

As for the Auburn Hills Tweezer, I think it's the Black Cat Vibe you are hearing.

The Bradshaw buttons are simply a midi controller. Trey has some presets which you can find in higher definition pictures through google. For example, Trey turns the Black Cat Vibe on and off using the Bradshaw switcher.

MomaDan This article has the most recent info I've seen, its from June 2010. http://www.proaudiostar.com/phish Settings have changed but all of Trey's gear is the same as right now. I think
