NYE Stunt, the "G"

12Next →View All

Super_Sash Permalink
Super_Sash Why does the "G" for the MSG 3 year stunt have to be a Gamehendge? Let's look at possible songs that they can do for a G stunt on NYE...

GHOST (uh...yeah...easy to guess this one, major jam vehicle and who doesn't want a 90's type ghost on NYE, could do some spooky shit with things coming down from the rafters)

GUYUTE (ok, you want a stunt...here's the 2nd "big" one, you want the Beibs, fine, Beibs is dressed up as the ugly pig and this goes into the "other" part of the song, My Friend My Friend)

Gotta Jiboo (this can jam for 25+ easily, just bring Tony Markelis in and he can just play the bass loop over and over and over and over and over....)

Golden Age (very popular with Trey, they have been playing originals for the first two letters...so why not a cover. Mike and Trey had the musical fist fight on stage last year over this song so...maybe)

Glide (doubtful but it's still a possibility. They opened last year's run with it, so maybe not)

Golgi (we see you...with a $400 ticket stub in your hand!)

Gumbo (hot gumbo in the balloons? probably not...)

Guelah Papyrus (meh...could lead to a fun Trey/Mike dance session but....)

Good times bad times (This would just be too cliche but this band LOVES the cliche, see any loving cup closer or GTBT from the last 20 years.)

GUY FORGET - (Forget Beibs, Guy Forget comes out and plays Fish in a tennis match, epic)

They aren't making a cover the theme song for New Years, so GTBT and Golden Age are axed.

Also, I'm not convinced Meatstick and Steam aren't coincidences.

HARRYHOOD213 WHY DOES THE STUNT HAVE TO INCLUDE A "G"? I don't get everyone's infatuation over this idea. Not happening, unless by coincidence. Just because Dick's had letter based shows doesn't mean dick for NYE.

While I don't disagree with you. If the gag does involve a G it will not be just a coincidence.

It seems too obvious to incorporate another acronym.

lilsuzyg If it is a G, I have a couple of theories..

- Golden Age - Trey obviously loves this song, they've been playing it a lot.. I could see it being a very theatrical thing (the way Meatstick was 2 years ago), especially now since Trey is firsthand working on a show - with lots of lights, dancers, costumes, etc - to ring in the new year, the start of their 30th year, and their "golden age"

- Guyute - pigs everywhere, flying pigs, including one that they fly out on? Crazier things have happened...

I've learned not to make hard line rules when it comes to Phish. Just because they've never done a certain thing in the past, or don't typically do a certain thing, doesn't mean they won't ever do it.

Having said that, I'm also not convinced Meatstick and Steam aren't coincidences.

You'll probably be right, but then that would mean, before the "S" show, before FYF, someone way back in 2010, said "We're at MSG for three years, so let's pick an "M" and go with Meat stick and we'll start letter and acronym stuff." I just don't buy it and even if it did happen, that's three shows over three years, even though I will have gone to all of them, a lot did not, and that means nothing to me like the FYF in Denver.

Im thinking the M and possibly the S are a coincidence but now that they are there a G may be an order.

I agree with your theory on the way they think, but as of late their NYE stunts are very premeditated. If I can remember, I think there was a tweet from Tom Marshall or an interview with Trey last year where they admitted that the Steam gag took over 50 hours of rehearsal?

Theres more significance of letters in 3.0 shows than just Dicks. I think this meat stick, steam, G is a very good thought. And I will reiterate....gamehendge set. I just don't see any of the others...maybe golden age considering the mayan 2012 and were moving on to a 'golden age'? Or because ghost had a big summer maybe ghost but i dont see that happening. Golden age is also two letters so you could argue that the G could stand for grateful dead if you argue its golden age. So they cover a GD album? not a chance. I dig the speculations though this is fun
