Do you think screen protectors are a big deal? I have had mine for about two or three months and I changed it this morning and I can't get the air bubbles out... Thinking about just ditching them all together, thoughts ?

I don't like them. Haven't had one since the iPhone 3G and haven't had any scratches on the glass.

pflaumja Don't do it. Screen bubbles are annoying, but you can always change the protector. When your phone gets F***ed up (which it will), you will be pissed. Some screen protectors can be applied better than others. Always use the actual IPhone ones. They're more expensive, but they work the best!

The one they did at the store for me was perfect couldn't even tell it was on there, not so much when I tried to do one myself. Probably going to go to the store later and ask then to do it for me after I buy some new ones... This is a first world problem people

walstib I've had a 4S for a little over a year. Never used a protector or a case. It's still fine. I'm fairly careful and don't ever get drunk so take that into account.

Rutherford_B_Raves its all personal preference. i dont care to use a screen protector but i would definitely recommend a good case. i never seem to damage the screen but i do seem to swim in various bodies of water with my phone so the new waterproof cases have been a god send for me. i do recommend having someone at the phone store put your screen protector on cause im pretty sure they are the only people with the proper training on how to get it on without any bubbles. i swear i was like a kid seeing his first magic show everytime the lady would put one on for me.

benevolution thread hijacking - I have never owned a smartphone before but that may soon change. I'm a Verizon user, on a family plan, and everyone else on my plan already has either an iphone or tablet or something, so I'm going to upgrade my regular-ass phone today or very soon. Verizon's website is offering a free iPhone 4, vs paying $199 for the iPhone 5. Is the 5 so much better its worth paying $200 vs getting a free phone? I can afford it but hey free is free! They're also offering the latest android phone the Droid DNA from HTC for the same price but I think I'm leaning towards the iPhone. what thoughts have you?

Chilly Screen protector and case! Seriously, if applied right you don't even notice the scree protector is there, so might as well get one. I just my phone all the time, without that screen protector I know it would be covered in scratches.

chris200w Permalink
chris200w The glass used on iPhones and other higher end smartphones is very scratch resistant. You can take a razor blade to it without leaving a mark. You can carry it in a pocket with keys without scratching the screen.

What will scratch the screen is prolonged exposure to fine abrasives, like little pieces of dirt and sand that find their way into your pocket and rub up against the screen all day. That's the problem with going sans screen protector.

Regarding bubbles under the screen protector, I've found that patience goes a long way in avoiding those. Get the screen protector lined up, then touch one end down and very slowly roll the rest onto the screen using a flat edge of a credit card or something to press it down. If a certain section goes down with a bubble, carefully peel it up and press it down again. If you go very slowly and very carefully you can avoid bubbles.

Also, there are some screen protectors that are gas-permeable. So even if there are bubbles under it, over a few hours/days all that air permeates through the screen protector and you're left with no bubbles.

spanishmoon If you follow the directions on the package you won't get any bubbles. I never read them and always had bubbles. When I got a new iphone I asked the guy at the store to do it for me.

1) He took off the backing
2) pinched the two corners together
3) line it up on the middle of the screen (so the holes line up with the buttons)
4) just let go and it falls right into place with no bubbles

He told me he had messed up a bunch of them before he decided to read the directions. But it's fast and easy if it's done right. Or you can just ask them to do it for you

MomaDan I had an otterbox w/ protector. The screen would get gross underneath so I would take the case off and clean it. But over time the plastic of the case started to break off. So one cheap case later its good.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH SCREEN PROTECTORS!?!?! Shit.

Anyway, I have had iphones and androids and NEVER have used a screen protector. It is loke sex with a condom. Yeah, it is still sex and still fun but... there is something missing.
