Best Phish Cover

sweetfeet Permalink
sweetfeet Curious as to what people think the best song that phish has covered is. I don't really know why, but I am personally a big fan every time they play Quinn the Eskimo.
Score: 1

RR1994 Permalink
Cities. Better than the original. Not many other Phish covers you can say that about.

Honorable mentions:

12/31/95 JBG. Trey tears the house down on that version.
Night nurse from fall 2010, I forget the date. One of the most soulful renditions of any song that I've heard Phish do.

Roses is a contender for that

splitopenandmelted Permalink
splitopenandmelted Roses, and I always have a blast listening to Killing in the Name because the crowd goes wiiiiiiild. Best if you watch the video as well cause everyone is jumping around like crazy. Plus I love when Fish sings. I also am partial to Fifty Ways to Leave your Lover. However, these definitely wouldn't popularly be considered "the best". They're just my favorites currently and songs I would shit if I got. (except Roses. I've had Roses a few times and did not shit my pants, for the record).

Edit: Also, Cities. Duh.

TheDeerman I'd probably go with Rock & Roll. A lot of really great jammed out versions over the years. And Page's vocals just make me smile.

^^^This.

The original doesn't sound like Timber Ho!, that's for damn sure. Phish really made that one their own.

2001 is a distant second. Phish slays the tune, but Deodato's original is (.) (.)

Here's the show...it's been hanging out on my iPod for a while
October 26, 2010

Verizon Wireless Arena, Manchester, NH

Set 1: After Midnight, The Sloth, Alumni Blues > Letter to Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues[1], Mellow Mood, Access Me, Llama, All of These Dreams, The Curtain With > Scent of a Mule, A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing, It's Ice > Walls of the Cave

Set 2: Possum > Light > Mike's Song > Simple[2] > Makisupa Policeman[3] -> Night Nurse[4] -> Makisupa Policeman > The Wedge, Ghost -> The Mango Song[5] > Weekapaug Groove[6] -> Llama Reprise

Encore: Show of Life

[1] "From Goddard College" added to lyrics.
[2] Magilla tease from Page.
[3] "Woke up this morning with a policeman at my door all I could do was shrug, and go back in my bedroom and smoke another nug" lyrics.
[4] Phish debut.
[5] Heavy Weekapaug teases from Trey.
[6] Can't You Hear Me Knocking jam with Ghost and Night Nurse lyrics. Unfinished.

Notes: After Midnight was played for the first time since December 31, 1999 (206 shows). In Alumni, Trey added "from Goddard College" after the final "'cause I got a degree" lyric. Simple contained a Magilla tease from Page. Makisupa included the lyrics "Woke up this morning with a policeman at my door all I could do was shrug, and go back in my bedroom and smoke another nug." This show featured the Phish debut of Night Nurse; original artist Gregory Isaacs passed away the night before, October 25, 2010. Weekapaug was heavily teased by Trey in Mango before the segue into Weekapaug itself. Weekapaug subsequently contained a Can't You Hear Me Knocking jam, which featured lyrics from Ghost and Night Nurse, and was unfinished.

What I think is the best depends on my mood and the era. So, I'll just throw out my current 3.0 favorite - no quarter.

I don't think this is the original, but I do believe that Odetta's version was true to the original, and beautiful in it's own right.

I like both, but neither of them is nearly as Bold As Love. If you don't believe me, then just ask the Axis.
