The new iTunes (11)

jerryguscia Permalink
jerryguscia I'm so mixed on it. It has a lot of cool things, but some things BLOW!

You can't type in the name of an album any more and zoom straight to it (for example, if you search "Phish" and type in 1997 to zoom straight to the things with the title 1997). You have to manually scroll around to find it. Also, the way they do two columns for every album is relatively stupid-looking to me.

But I really like how you can search things and further categorize from there (for example, type in "Phish" and further go into MGB or TAB or Vida Blue from there). And I like how you can see the album artwork for EVERYTHING!

I kinda think this is a product of how often people say that things are outdated just because they aren't changed; iTunes 10 was perfect to me, I definitely think it was ruined with iTunes 11.

Thoughts?

Edit: I'm definitely reinstalling iTunes 10 on my computer.

bostonron Funny, I was just talking about this. Before my "vacation" my computer got all weird on me and I had to restore to factory settings when I got back. I hate the new iTunes. The worst thing for me is the album view. I loved the cover art flow. Now it's awkward as shit. I tried DL'ing an older version, but it automatically updated. I'm gonna roll with it a little bit and see if i can adjust. Otherwise I'm going for another media player. I've been recommended some very cool ones, but I'm gonna stick with iTunes for a bit before making the change. But, boy does this new version blow.

can you upload a screenshot? that sounds awesome.

MomaDan It looks almost exactly the same for me. I had those 3 columns with Album, Artist, to the left instead of on top. Anyways, if not for owning an ipod and iphone I would use something else. Slave To The Apple Sh1t

What I meant is, if you looked at Phish Destroys America in iTunes 10, it wouldn't have shown an album cover because it's only 4 songs. But in iTunes 11, it does. I like that because I LOVE album art and sometimes, you only want one or two songs from a show (if you're low on space or have duplicates).

My biggest gripe is that when I am in the library, and I then click on something else (i.e. store), the library hasn't saved my spot anymore when I go back. It goes back to the top.

lol. There have been plug-ins for both Windows and Mac for a long time that allow iTunes to play straight up FLAC files. Or as @ledzepmaster said, just convert to ALAC.

Alac.
But why can't they accept the format EVERYONE ALREADY USES?! You can use mp3s -- that's not Apple's format.

I'll just stick with Media Monkey or Foobar that have built in FLAC players.

benevolution i had no choice. itunes stopped recognizing my ipod and after several failed attempts i had to uninstall itunes and reinstall it. i know if you look around you can find older versions posted here and there but i just went to apples website without thinking and before i realized what i had done i had this piece of shit on my pc. at least i was able to get my music library back in order (eventually). took me all day to get my grateful dead back into the library and arranged how i had it before. so hate this version, but i am getting an iphone soon so i have to get used to apples way of "upgrading" anyway.

How do you get iTunes 10 back? I hate the new version too, can't see playlists and songs at the same time, just really sh*tty layout.

Also what's a good plug-in to play FLACs through iTunes? That's news to me...

Chilly I've been using winamp forever basically, I've tried to get used to Itunes but I really dislike it. I still use it to put songs on my ipod and iphone but not as a media player. Winamp works great for me, and with a million skins to choose from, it looks great too. There are tons of plugins as well, but the media library on its own is perfect.

andrewrose It's awful. I made the mistake of updating before doing some research. I keep most of my active music library on two iPods because it would just take up twice the size of my hard drive. I have album art assigned to everything because I could never stand seeing the little blank/grey cover. This includes many, many a custom-made cover for Phish shows. My old gripe with iTunes was that you couldn't use the cover flow feature for your iPod library when it was plugged in. Well not only did they not add that feature... they took away cover flow and now you can't even view album art that's stored on the iPod, no little window in the left corner, nothing. Seriously a WTF move. I spent the morning downgrading. Here's a link with instructions on how to do it for anyone who needs to move back.

FunkyCFunkyDo I haven't updated my iTunes in years, despite the weekly prompts that the "new" edition has been released. I can hone my searches and it guides me directly to what I'm after. Example: "phish gin 2003" brings up exactly nine results.

harroldHOOD wow. Updated it on my gf's computer and can't believe they eliminated that search feature. It's so key to my music library I can't believe they would do that. No chance I'm upgrading. Really hope new iphone doesn't make me. Everyday I love just putting in the date (-12-03) and seeing what shows I have from that date.

benevolution All, I repeat, ALL of the album artwork in my music library is now gone. The "get album artwork" option does nothing at all. That's over 1500 albums of artwork now gone. Shame on Apple.

Still buying an iPhone 5.
