12/2/99 Appeciation

deBebbler Permalink
deBebbler Giving this show the first spin for me in a long time, and it really stands the test of time.

After a typical tour opening first set, the flow just keeps coming after a Boogie On opener, with multifaceted jamming in Gin, patient spaciness in 2001, and a killer YEM with the Little Drummer Boy. Those last three in a row clock in just over an hour.

Any other love for this great start to a great December tour?

December 02, 1999

The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, MI

Set 1: Runaway Jim, Farmhouse[1], Heavy Things, Roggae, Run Like an Antelope[2], Wading in the Velvet Sea, Poor Heart > Sample in a Jar > Free, The Squirming Coil

Set 2: Boogie On Reggae Woman, Gotta Jibboo, Bathtub Gin[3] -> Also Sprach Zarathustra > You Enjoy Myself[4] -> The Little Drummer Boy[5]

Encore: Bold As Love

[1] Slightly different arrangement, with an additional chorus at the end.
[2] Roggae tease from Trey.
[3] 2001 teases before segueing into 2001 proper.
[4] Silent jam.
[5] Emerged from the YEM vocal jam and ended with Fishman alone onstage.

Notes: Farmhouse featured a slightly different arrangement, with an additional chorus at the end. Antelope contained Roggae teases from Trey. Gin included 2001 teases before segueing into 2001 proper. YEM included a silent jam. Little Drummer Boy emerged from the YEM vocal jam and ended with Fishman alone onstage.

jmponder '99 is my favorite year and this show, especially the Gin -> Also Sprach > YEM is one of the top moments. The Gin sort of reminds me of 11/23/97 in that they seem to be closing down on the jam only for them to switch gears and go into full on shred mode. The YEM is also incredibly unique, definitely one of my favorite versions. December '99 really is a fantastic month

I distinctly remember my shock when, after they dropped the pregnant pause in the Bliss section, that YEM started back up. I had forgotten all about it and was expecting that lone note from Trey to restart Divided Sky. LOL, it threw me for a loop.

The 2001 was unique too, ending with a washout rather than the chorus cresendo. Good stuff.

This is very educational content and written well for a change. It's nice to see some people still understand how to produce a quality post!

MJZ1974 Love this show! December '99 kicks serious ass.

I'll copy/paste what I wrote about it last October (search function worked wonders this time!). It was a long thread...no need to post the whole link.

"I just wonder if anyone else has even listened to it? Is this one skipped over and dismissed as another "December '99" show? (I love Dec. '99 BTW). Just curious.

Honorable mention for the end jam on Boggie On Reggae Woman (edit - This is still my favorite Boggie On ever played). The last 5 minutes of it...that's what I love about late '99 Phish. Not as fast and furious as...say...Summer '94...but I love how they would just lock into a nasty groove like that and keep 'er chugging along. No 1000mph lightning speed from Trey, no crazy slap bombs from Mike, no insane keyboard fills from Page, no extra drum rolls from Fish, just everyone locked in and riding the wave.

Listening to the copy from the spreadsheet, its not the best but it actually sounds pretty good once you get your head into it.

As a note, the loud crowd eruption you hear towards the beginning of 2001 (which took forever to finally develop out of Gin) was because 2 guys up on the lighting rig (kind of over the crowd) must have thrown about 10,000 of the glow ring necklaces into the crowd...giant handfulls at a time. The glow ring frisbee war that ensued was epic. I was rolling on 2 hits of E and I will never, ever forget that moment.

Oh...the silent jam in YEM is fun to listen to on this aud."

If I close my eyes, I can remember this 2nd set more vividly than any other set of Phish I've seen. Even the ones I saw this summer.

n00b100 The five minutes between Mike teasing I'm 18 to the transition into the vocal jam in YEM is my most listened to piece of music from December 99.

jmponder FYI, fromtheaquarium on youtube has uploaded every show. I just got done listening to 12/2/99 and I think i'm going to take my own advice and listen to all of December '99. The AUD of 12/2 wasn't horrible

I definitely have heard much, much worse audio quality than my copy of 12/2.
