What was the first Phish tune you heard?

dkast85 Permalink
dkast85 People always ask "What was your first show?" or "How did you hear about Phish?"

My question is simply what was the first song you heard by them and when? Did you like it? Was it a live version or a studio version.

The first song I ever heard by Phish was 'The Curtain With.' I heard it in 2005 when I first heard of Phish. I decided to give them a listen so I youtubed them. This was the early days of Youtube. So all the appeared was 'The Curtain With' from Coventry. Ironically the last song Phish ever played (we all know how that turned out!)

Anyway I loved the song. Still my favorite song by them.

jerryguscia YEM (from Roxy '93), but I was so closed-minded and in love with the Dead that I said,"this is meh compared to Dead". Then, I listened to a couple more things on my own (including IT) and the Lizards from the IT DVD mixed with Meatstick from NYE 2010 drew me in for life.

bostonron Bouncing from A Live One. First thing I ever owned or heard from them.

I bought it just from seeing Phish patches on people's packs at my first and only Dead show October '94. Those images always stuck with me, for some reason. In talking to a grungy hippie kid at North Station summer '95, who also had a Phish patch on his pack, he recommended ALO to me (after me asking what album I should get. His response, of course was "they are a live band" but ALO just came out).

I don't remember being blown away by Bouncing. Chalkdust got me interested. YEM, after a few listens is the song that hooked me. I bought almost every album I could find from them before summer was out and saw my first show December 5th 1995. Saw the two at Worcester that holiday run, and I was off and running. 17 years later, almost 100 shows, and I love them now more then ever.

And after going through a love hate affair with Bouncing, I actually really like the tune now. I don't want it in the meat of a 2nd set, but I can enjoy it and sing along a bit most times.

Whenever my buddies would get together and jam Wading was a song that came up frequently. When I first heard that song I had know idea about Phish (yet), but I always liked the tune. Thought the lyrics were a little strange (how do you wade in a velvet sea anyways?), but little did I know that I would come to love the band that wrote Velvet Sea. Thanks to @stagebanter for unknowingly indoctrinating me!

LawnBoy0925 the squirming coil from the lawn boy studio album was my first time hearing phish. I was in middle school, probably sometime around 97, just learning how to play the guitar and a friend of mines older brother recomended i listen to the entire album. after hearing the first section of coil, i was hooked. then came Junta, and much like Golgi_Groove, the studio version of Divided Sky took my love of this (new to me) band to a whole new level. I had never been struck emotionally by music like that before and a true love for both of these studio albums holds dear to me. oddly enough, it wasn't until a couple of years later, freshman year of highschool, that i discovered the magical bliss of live phish. needless to say over 15 years later, my love for this band continues to grow and am still inspired to say the least. wow, I haven't thought about this in a long time. great thread!

Palmer Simple, Summer of 1994. I remember hearing this weird ass song and falling in love with it. Then a friend of mine gave me junta and Rift. I saw them not to long after this awaking of music. I was a huge grunge fan and still am, I loved Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc... but it changed my views on music for the remaining years. I lived right near the VT border so radiostations like WEQX always played Phish so i was aware of some of the stuff they had broadcasted over the airwaves but live shows on tape was my hook.

Herbdacious I first was introduced by my buddy sending me a link online to YEM from ALO. I listened to it and thought wow this is pretty good. But I was about 14 and into brutal metal at the time. Around 15-16 I downloaded hoist and farmhouse and listened to songs like dirt and farmhouse, you know real chill songs. Sample a little bit. Then I heard in no particular order Stash, D-Sky, and Slave around 17. At 18 I started listening to the dead. Saw them on the '09 tour. Loved it. Went and caught the SPAC '09 show and was sold for good. First live LLAMA! (One of my least fav songs at the time). But the 3rd song was Guyute which I had never heard. And when those climaxing chords roared at the end and the crowd cheered, I was sold for good.

careful_w_that_axe_Miller Idk. Used to listen to Gone Phishin, before that I guess I had some Phish songs on my laptop, DS, YEM, BAR type stuff I think. I loved divided sky just thought it was the prettiest song ever written, I love classical music and that what DS sounds like to me.

I will say first "Phish" song though of course it's a cover I heard live was "loving cup" performed by Vince Welnik in a tent in upstate New York with a family I'm not a part of but boy did they make me feel at home.

My first Phish song by Phish, live, Golgi @ my first show and it was awesome.

Then immediately after was Free 'studio version'.

Then I thought... damn this band has some crazy funky bass slapping, shredding guitar solos, and they also can play excellent harmonies. This is my new favorite band.. AND SO IT BEGAN!

Cowards Permalink
Cowards "Stash" from Picture of Nectar.

It was in a torrent of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos, the list that I think Rolling Stone did. I think, though, that the "Stash" that was in that list should have been the ALO version.

Anyway, I think they were a Spanish / Latino band, and could never remember whether the song title was Stash or Phish.

This was probably 2006, maybe? It took me another 2 years to listen to anything else, which was actually "The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday" - the album not the track.

And then 3 years later I made it to my first show, 12/28/11.

Woo!
