My question is simply what was the first song you heard by them and when? Did you like it? Was it a live version or a studio version.
The first song I ever heard by Phish was 'The Curtain With.' I heard it in 2005 when I first heard of Phish. I decided to give them a listen so I youtubed them. This was the early days of Youtube. So all the appeared was 'The Curtain With' from Coventry. Ironically the last song Phish ever played (we all know how that turned out!)
Anyway I loved the song. Still my favorite song by them.
Dwd not sure what year or show... story goes one of my friends was like i wana take you to a phish show i already bought us tickets and sent me an email of about 15 songs and said to check them out... anyway checked out songs in email and this was like two months before the show didnt do any other listening pre show, saw that show and then went bunk downloading the upcoming weeks little did i know it would be a life changing show

Billy Breathes was my first album before i knew anything about the band.. i think it was given to me by my aunt but i can't recall
Gumbo from A Live One while being introduced. Asked my buddy to play another and he went to YEM. And that was that.
Annnnnnnnd boom goes the dynamite
I bought it just from seeing Phish patches on people's packs at my first and only Dead show October '94. Those images always stuck with me, for some reason. In talking to a grungy hippie kid at North Station summer '95, who also had a Phish patch on his pack, he recommended ALO to me (after me asking what album I should get. His response, of course was "they are a live band" but ALO just came out).
I don't remember being blown away by Bouncing. Chalkdust got me interested. YEM, after a few listens is the song that hooked me. I bought almost every album I could find from them before summer was out and saw my first show December 5th 1995. Saw the two at Worcester that holiday run, and I was off and running. 17 years later, almost 100 shows, and I love them now more then ever.
And after going through a love hate affair with Bouncing, I actually really like the tune now. I don't want it in the meat of a 2nd set, but I can enjoy it and sing along a bit most times.
Whenever my buddies would get together and jam Wading was a song that came up frequently. When I first heard that song I had know idea about Phish (yet), but I always liked the tune. Thought the lyrics were a little strange (how do you wade in a velvet sea anyways?), but little did I know that I would come to love the band that wrote Velvet Sea. Thanks to @stagebanter for unknowingly indoctrinating me!
BTW it was Junta version
speaking of which? Does anyone have a good video recording of 'The Curtain With' from Coventry? Not Coventry, but here's another '04 Curtain (With) video that I've never seen:
Last Live Song: Tweezer Reprise Blossom Ctr 2012
Although, Saw Trey in Columbus this October so Last live song was First Tube. October 2012
First song I heard was the studio version of Free, thought it was alright, but my brother told me Phish is all about the live stuff so I checked out Hampton Comes Alive. Bathtub Gin was the first song of theirs that I reaaaally fell in love with, and I still listen to that version on regular basis.
I will say first "Phish" song though of course it's a cover I heard live was "loving cup" performed by Vince Welnik in a tent in upstate New York with a family I'm not a part of but boy did they make me feel at home.
My first Phish song by Phish, live, Golgi @ my first show and it was awesome.
Then immediately after was Free 'studio version'.
Then I thought... damn this band has some crazy funky bass slapping, shredding guitar solos, and they also can play excellent harmonies. This is my new favorite band.. AND SO IT BEGAN!
It was either Ghost or Birds Of A Feather I think...
first song live was acdcbag, was hooked after that
in around 2004 i had downloaded a bunch of studio songs. i remember not having the patience to listen to yem`
Had never heard, nor heard of, phish prior to getting tickets to the HORDE fest that spring.
Bouncing maybe? Or Sample...Or Fee.
Either way, I was such a n00b. Couldn't figure out why Bouncing wasn't on my Round Room disc.

I remeber it interupted a good dart game in the absement we were in - I'm fairly certain I said - get that shit off!
Fee off the junta cassette - or grey tape of whatever it was called.I spent a good part of late 1992 imploring my brother to "fucking play something else for once."

It was in a torrent of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos, the list that I think Rolling Stone did. I think, though, that the "Stash" that was in that list should have been the ALO version.
Anyway, I think they were a Spanish / Latino band, and could never remember whether the song title was Stash or Phish.
This was probably 2006, maybe? It took me another 2 years to listen to anything else, which was actually "The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday" - the album not the track.
And then 3 years later I made it to my first show, 12/28/11.
Woo!
