Help identifying a Phish show

me_no_are_no_nice_guy Permalink
me_no_are_no_nice_guy There was this show I had on tape back in the mid-90's, and during the show, trey asked the crowd to help them come up with a song. He asked for a chord to jam on, and a style of music. I remember the style of music selected was reggae. After a little bit of goofing around with it Trey said something like "Your song is weird, it needs lyrics", and they went into a real song.

Anyone have any idea what show this is?

Melkweg, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Set 1: Wilson > Divided Sky, Horn, Split Open and Melt, Ya Mar > Funky Bitch, Taste[1], Theme From the Bottom, Tweezer > Llama

Set 2: It's Ice -> Prince Caspian[2] > Mike's Song -> Run Like an Antelope -> Purple Rain > Hold Your Head Up, Jam[3], NICU -> Slave to the Traffic Light[2], Suzy Greenberg

Set 3: David Bowie[2] -> Free[2], Hello My Baby

Encore: Bathtub Gin, Johnny B. Goode

[1] Debut of the reworked version, which Trey announced would be performed like this (the Billy Breathes album version) thenceforth.
[2] Unfinished.
[3] Interactive, as the band jammed on chords yelled out by the fans.

Notes: The reworked Taste debuted at this show, and Trey announced that the song would be performed like this (the Billy Breathes album version) from now on. Caspian, Slave, Bowie, and Free were all unfinished. The jam before NICU was interactive, as the band jammed on chords yelled out by the fans.

Yup. "Ska" song.

We're freaks for banging something like this out. A band that has played a thousand shows and we can figure this out with no more then a few sentences.

me_no_are_no_nice_guy Yes! I thought it was a European show. thanks! It was actually a "Ska" groove that they tried jamming over. This is the kind of shit that really got me into this band back then.

spanishmoon Some of us are old enough to remember Name That Tune. Where the contestants would name the song in as few notes as possible.

Phish game: Name That Show
Bob, I can name that that show with just one hint

johnnyd Definitely Melkweg.

I mean, its possible it happened more than once. But definitely there. People were yelling ridiculous chords from the rafters.

"E Flat Diminished 13th!!!"

I don't even know if thats a real thing.

1400+ shows actually....and from a show 16 years ago, nonetheless.

This is a great argument for why dementia patients should be given weed.
